Noob Questions: How to assign which tiles to work, and where are the sliders gone?

Okay, so I'm only playing the demo atm, so a bit limited until the game arrives on Friday.

Experienced Civ IV monarch btw:

I'm quite confused over which tiles I'm working, theres no yellow huts or circles anymore on the city screen :confused:

Also, are beakers made exactly? Its not based on commerce anymore but on population? Is that why happiness is so important? Theres a lot to take in! :lol:

One more thing, how come resources no longer need to be connected to a trade network, and where can u see the commerce generated by connecting cities to the capital?

Go into the city screen.
There you get a layout of the tiles; the empty circles are unworked, the green filled ones are worked.

Yes, each citizen gives 1 beaker. 1.5 with a library. University, public school increase further. Great scientist can build an academy improvement which provides beakers when worked. Similarly great artist improvement. And jungle tiles with a universeity.

Is that why happiness is so important?
Yes, but happiness is also now almost the sole check on expansion. Happiness is like old happiness wrapped up with health and maintenance costs (corruption from earlier civs).

Because roads cost gold upkeep, so they want to keep roads to a minimum; just linking the cities.

and where can u see the commerce generated by connecting cities to the capital?
In the economy screen, and the total by mousing over the gold income indicator at the top of the main screen.

disincentivizing road/railroad spam is a very good thing. In Civ4 every single tile in my territory would be railroad by the end of the game which is stupid. Even in the early days I would spam roads if I didn't have something better for my workers to do.

The Romans (IRL) built lots of roads but even they did not "spam every tile" (so to speak) with roads.

Between 1UPC, terrain effects and more realistic road costs, the geography of combat is far more varied in Civ5 than in Civ4.

The way I see it, roads are now the national highways of your civilization. Kings and federal governments didn't typically oversee construction of every single dirt road, just the major arteries between population centers. Resources are automatically connected to this 'highway' network by local lords or towns.

OMFG, are you serious? No wonder my economy is in the $hits. I built roads and railroads on like every tile thinking that since my units can't stack that I'd need MOAR roads to get them quickly to the front without running into each other.

Holy cow my infrastructure costs 1/3 of my expenses!

Yup. I like the new system, makes road infrastructure much more strategic.
 
Just to be more specific, in case someone still cant find it: when you are in the city screen, look up at the top right side of the UI. You'll see some + and - symbols next to various categories. Open the topmost + category and you will then see the green citizen symbols on your city tiles where they are working. You will also see the old 'avoid growth' and 'focus production' options.
