North Korea declares itself a nuclear weapons state

North Korea has passed a law declaring itself to be a nuclear weapons state, according to state news agency KCNA.

The country's leader Kim Jong-un called the decision "irreversible" and ruled out the possibility of any talks on denuclearisation, it said. The law also enshrines the country's right to use a pre-emptive nuclear strike to protect itself.
Despite crippling sanctions, Pyongyang has conducted six nuclear tests between 2006 and 2017. It has continued to advance its military capability - in breach of United Nations Security Council resolutions - to threaten its neighbours and potentially even bring the US mainland within striking range. Mr Kim carried long-range launches and nuclear tests in 2019 following two headline-grabbing but inconclusive summits with then US president Donald Trump.

But talks between the countries have since stalled. Although the Biden administration has indicated it's willing to talk to Pyongyang, it hasn't said whether President Joe Biden would meet Mr Kim. The White House also said its attempts to contact Pyongyang and overtures of help over its Covid outbreak had gone unanswered so far.
The US reviewed its North Korea policy last year and reiterated that "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean peninsula was the goal. Mr Biden said he would pursue it with a mix of diplomacy and "stern deterrence". Mr Kim responded by saying his country must prepare for both "dialogue and confrontation". Meanwhile, tensions on the Korean peninsula have spiked this year with Pyongyang firing a record number of ballistic missiles.
South Korea and the US have responded with a volley of missiles and the largest joint military exercises on the peninsula in years.

It isn't new, North Korea was a nuclear state a long time already

It makes perfect sense if you ask me. The DPRK is hated by the west. Nothing short of completely dissolving the country and having it annexed by the south is going to change that. And like all nations hated by the west they are under permanent sanctions. Again, nothing is ever going to change that. However,as long as they have atomic weapons they can at least avoid being the target of a war or foreign sponsored coup as was the case in dozens of other nations across the world. So they have absolutely nothing to gain by giving up their atomic weapons and everything to loose.

If it signed a peace treaty and dropped its official policy of murdering the south under control... I think that'd do almost everything about being hated.

But that'd defeat the point. When a country has an official policy of raping the neighbors, raping the neighbors is the point. The rest is diversion.

There's quite a few reasons to despise the DPRK, the least of which is its attachment to the quaint notion it's a communist country. Reeducation camps, labor camps, absolute control of the media, no political parties, no civil rights...yeah, workers' paradise.

uhm , typical . When comes from individuals , totally respectable . When not , it shows how smart the West is , reminding that they are allowed to kill Russians because if there is a response everybody will die . Blackmail it is called , ı think .

Right. Killing Russians, so much fun. Totes an American war.

Reeducation camps, labor camps, absolute control of the media, no political parties, no civil rights
it takes fewer words to say "communist country" and more or less explains the same thing.

Nothing short of completely dissolving the country and having it annexed by the south is going to change that.
i was under the impression that south korea wouldn't want it, thus it would have to have regime change or something.
