This is an alleged north korean propaganda movie, which comes over as a social documentary.

Video description:
Here is the formal statement I gave to Federal Police on 16 June 2012:

On a trip to visit family in Seoul in April, I was approached by a man and a woman who claimed to be North Korean defectors. They presented me with a DVD that recently came into their possession and asked me to translate it. They also asked me to post the completed film on the Internet so that it could reach a worldwide audience. I believed what I was told and an agreement was made to protect their identities (and mine).

Despite my concerns about what I was viewing when I returned home, I proceeded to translate and post the film on You Tube because of the film's extraordinary content. I have now made public my belief that this film was never intended for a domestic audience in the DPRK. Instead, I believe that these people, who presented themselves as 'defectors' specifically targeted me because of my reputation as a translator and interpreter.

Furthermore, I now believe these people work for the DPRK. The fact that I have continued to translate and post the film in spite of this belief does not make me complicit in their intention to spread their ideology. I chose to keep posting this film because - regardless of who made it - I believe people should see it because of the issues it raises and I stand by my right to post it for people to share and discuss freely with each other.

Sabine

I have translated this film, laid in the English voice over and subtitles, and on legal advice have blurred the identity of the presenter and/or blacked out certain elements.

This propaganda movie differs from every propaganda movie coming from totalitarian dictatorships in that it doesn't waste it's time on promoting it's own awesomeness but in raising several very valid points about western society. It honestly feels more like a left-wing civilization critic than a propaganda movie.

If this movie is indeed what it says, then it is possibly aimed at liberals or progressives to cause dissent and opposition to right-wing war propaganda. Although one has to ask if knowing that the movie comes from the most repressive government in the world doesn't defeat it's purpose.

Still not sure if it's genuine ... the movie delivers a spot-on analysis of western culture which is not something one would expect out of North Korea.

Thoughts?

I skipped through it, and as far as I can tell, there's very little in here that you wouldn't find in it which you wouldn't find at a Green Party meeting or in a copy of Red Pepper. Standard sub-Chomskyian stuff, nothing really radical about it.

Going to try watching all of this, but I'm 10 seconds in and it bugs me how everything out of North Korea is translated as literally as possible.

exactly. i'm used to hearing radical nonsense in propaganda flicks. north korean propaganda being reasonable is just weird.

Nope!

Im assuming it might be a fake, I mean explaining Jersey shore to isolated Koreans? And being so hypocritical...

under the assumption that it's not fake, don't think that this video is aimed at the broad north korean population.
it would be either used to indoctrinate north korean who for one reason or another often come into contact with foreigners. like those guys that have to draw The Simpsons for Fox.
Or it could be intended to create anti-government sentiment in western democracies.

I loved the part on television indoctrinating the west. North Korea uses it to do the same thing.

I assumed that the video was aimed at South Koreans rather than North Koreans.

Shows how out of touch they are that they think we need to import it.

I actually meant to suggest that this was unreasonably moderate in its criticism of the West, but, sure, I suppose there's two ways of putting it. ;)

I think it was directed towards those who see North Korea favorably, as well as those who think it is ironic that NK is using the same tactics as its enemies much like the Soviet Union did. Much of it is quite similar to Soviet propaganda from the 60s and 70s.

North Korea has TVs ? (and the electricity to run them)

So you gave it 4 stars?
So you can't help but deliberately concoct nonsensical gibberish and calling it my opinion by intentionally "bearing false witness" yet again?
