As was mentioned in the forums, PTW was to be ïncluded in Conquest, at least all the changes it brought to the original CIV3. After installing conquest and looking around, I found something is missing, which I wanted to use for a WW2 scenario: The Extra WW2 units are gone... only a few ones have been used for the WW2 scenario, but all the others (German infantry,....) are gone, meaning..... what a pity, I think they should have included as many units as possible on the CD, making it possible for us to use them in scenarios which we could then trade without having to also upload every unit we add....

The full Civ3 directory takes up 1.5 gigs. PTW and Conquests take up over 850 megs. It would have taken a DVD to fit everything in.

I wouldn't have minded the DVD,.. but I understand this is wishfull thinking....
but seriously, the best option would have been from them to release the bonus CD worldwide for a few USD/EUR extra, and fill it also with the best available extra units as well as those not beeing on the Conquest release, making it a great Addon for those of us wanting to make scenarios or mods....

PS: why in H... couldn't they put all the units in one big main units folder instead of putting them in every scenario folder and in all 3 versions folders....

Something that could have been done was for the installation process to NOT delete said files from people that had installed PtW originally. This also holds true for the other PtW files that were deleted (PtW Editor, all the fan scenarios, among others). Fortunately, I noticed the loss on my first computer before installing the second Conquests CD on the second computer. I reinstalled PtW and each patch on the second computer. Before updating to the next patch, I copied the entire PtW folder into a different folder. When I get some spare time, I will go through and copy stuff back into the appropriate folders after making sure which files are needed. It seems that the PtW Patches also deleted some of the scenario files IIRC.

Nor the Firaxis-made terrains, Winter and European. I looked. :(

So the Firaixs stuff that wasn't used isn't included? I thought you weren't allowed to download this stuff. I'm sure there are some mods that use this art. Would I have to buy PTW in order to play it?

While they are spread out there aren't duplicates in the folders.

The reason they are spread out is so that a scenario can supercede the defaults.

Exactly my concern, as my mods rely heavily on the existence of the .../Civ3PTW/extras/*/art/units/* folders... :(

warpstorm, I don't see why they couldn't put all the standard units in one units folder instead of 3 (even though I know It wouldn't change anything for playing the game), I understand the advantage of making extra folders for the scenarios, but not for the main game. If we were student in informatics, and gave our professors this kind of folder structure for our programms, I'll let you guess what comment we would get....

Wait...are you saying that C3C not only doesn't include those PTW extras, but it deletes them if you install it over your already-existing PTW??

This can't be intended, can it? I mean...that's really bad.

I don't know. It would have worked just as well that way (and probably would have been a little easier). The code (obviously) supports it just fine (and you can override it in scenarios).

If I were to venture a guess, it'd probably have something to do with 100+ hour work weeks and lack of sleep.

We do not DELETE any PTW files from your disk.

However, unless you have the GOLD version of Civ 3, which is guaranteed to have Civ3 and PTW patched to the latest patch, we DO go ahead and reinstall PTW on your machine.

So if you had any mods that CHANGED ORIGINAL PTW FILES, those mods will be overwritten by the original files. The extra content (the user-made files that came with PTW and the special units made by Firaxis) will not be touched however.

You can see why we have to do it this way. Conquests depends on graphics and text files from both Civ3 and Play The World; we want to make sure you will have a working Conquests game after the install is complete.

to clarify the situation:
here is a short view of what happened on my PCS:
I installed COnquest on my PC and on my girlfriend's laptop, one installation was over the PTW 1.27, the other was from scratch installing first CIV3, then Conquest:

The installation on the PTW 1.27 DID NOT delete the extra units or terrain, PTW is still complete
The installation on the Laptop, meaning completely new install, DID NOT Install these files

CONCLUSION: Someone installing only CIV3 and COnquest will NOT have theses Extra units/graphics, in order to have them you have to buy PTW and install it before you install Conquest (Maybe also the patch 1.27 to be sure)

In hope this helps clarify it

The problem is that no one will buy PTW now, just for 5-6 WW2 units, dinos and winter/euro terrain. This is unfair to the people who didn't buy PTW (PTW they have now is not the "full" one) as well to the people who bought PTW, since their extras aren't worth a penny if "incompatible" with current PTW version. So, Gobi's asnwer may help kring, be we are still waiting for the information about the copyright restrictions for the old PTW art.
