Hmm.... i just had a game with the Ottomans and it reached the point of running out of city names with the founding of Van. Instead of "New Istanbul", the pre-selected name was "Not Constantinople". Is this supposed to be some sorta joke about Istanbul and Constantinople (and Byzantium) being the same city? Does this happen to everyone? I dont have a screenie cause i thought it said "New Constantinople" at first but then i realized i was Ottomans.

i have seen this as well. i do not know the reasoning behind it however.

i think its quite a good joke. I have never encountered it myself but now i know.

There was a song...

It goes something like this:

"Istanbul was Constantinople. Now it's Instanbul, not Constantinople..."

I think if you are before a certain age or english is not your primary language, then you might not get the reference.

There is a funny song by "They Might Be Giants" called "Istanbul" that is all about how Contantinople is now called Istanbul. I'm pretty sure the game designers thought of this song when they put in that easter egg.

The song goes something like this:

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now a Turkish delight on a moonlit night

Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be living in Istanbul.

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way

So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Contstantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks.

<edit- oops, cross-post>

Istanbul was not written by "They might be Giants". They just covered it. It was written in 1953 and performed by the 4 Lads.

The later version was much more popular, and I'm sure that is the one that the Firaxian's were thinking of.

You're probably right.

That song always annoyed me for some reason. Maybe it's because I first heard it from my 7th grade history teacher, who I always thought was gay.

Thanks for setting me straight. I've only ever heard the the TMBG version. Never occurred to me that it was a cover. Well, depending on how old the programmers are, it could have been either. Funny tune at any rate.

heh, just found the original on itunes. It's a lot slower. awesome.

OMG!!! I remember when the 1953 version was popular. :mischief:

you people do understand your talking about a song on a game discussion site right? if so, keep talkin, its fine with me.

We're tracing the origin of an easter egg that directly relates to the game. I see no problem with that.

I've always got a huge kick out of this tune.

I've not watched the show in quite some time, but did TMBG never play this song on one of their numerous appearances on "The Screensavers"?

do any of you actually have the song on their com. if so i want it please. it sounds funny
