Backstory, Part Four:

The seas were rough when the helicopter carrying Chaplain Chandrasekhar and the Sniper Nahkarma returned to the Impending Retribution. Aside from the deck pitching every way imaginable, visibility was close to nil and made landing the helicopter that much more difficult. With a storm raging overhead and the ship operating under war conditions, there was little to no light casting anywhere on the landing pad, save for one drenched sailor holding a pair of light sticks in his hands to guide the clumsy helicopter in. After numerous attempts and subsequent wave-offs, the pilot did finally manage to expertly land safely.

As soon as the wheels touched down, a large party of armed men came out to greet the returning survivors. Originally apart of a top secret mission to kill the Insurgent Leader, also known as "The One," after the mission's failure the remnants of Commander Backwards Logic's squad had descended into controlled anarchy in a desperate attempt to oust the traitors that helped sabotage the mission from the get-go. Command had a number of questions for these lone survivors - any sort of 'welcome home' reception the two were expecting clearly had to wait.

They instead were greeted with a gruff pat down while a handful of Marines looked on, clearly wary of the two remaining. Nahkarma grudgingly handed over his sniper rifle, which was then passed onto another for safekeeping and inspection. While that transaction took place, another located a Holy Book on the Chaplain's person and asked the Book be handed over.

"Is it really necessary," implored the Chaplain, "to take away my copy of the Holy Scripture?"

Following an exasperated sigh, the Marine allowed Chandrasekhar to hold onto his book. After all, he was a man of faith. "Thank you," came the response from Chandrasekhar. "May God be with you."

The two were led downstairs to a bleak looking compartment, best described as an interrogation room within the ship's Brig. The two were escorted into the spartanly dressed room and were told to sit in the metal chairs that awaited them. Inside an adjacent room, Captain Charles Whitower, commander of the Retribution, looked at live video feed of the two. "Is it really necessary to do this now?" asked one of his aides. "The guys have been through hell the past two weeks." Judging by their body language, Whitower had a hard time believing the last statement. He would have expected there to be fidgeting, some whining, some sort of argument from the two wondering why they were being treated as they were. But nothing. Not a sound. They were very calm. Way too calm given the circumstances.

Whitower entered the room and stood near the far wall, back partially turned to the suspicious characters sitting at the empty table in the center of the room. Thunder crashed outside, a low rumble slowly filling the room and dissipating slowly. His mind turned. Something wasn't right and he knew it, but he couldn't let on to the others, lest they get suspicious and clam up. He started slowly.

"I know this is probably isn't exactly what you had in mind for a reunion." He paused. "But I'm certain you understand regulations are regulations, and there's a number of folks higher up the food chain than me that have a lot of questions for you two."

Nothing. Nahkarma looked distracted, but Chandrasekhar seemed fairly engaged. He turned to the Chaplain and continued.

"Ultimately, I just want to make it easy and get this over with. So I'll start at the beginning. After the initial drop, what went on?"

Chandrasekhar met his gaze and began, illustrating how one paratrooper's parachute failed to open. He went on and elaborated on how Commander Logic divvied up his forces to cover the town. He then described the opening salvos of the Insurgent Snipers and how they pinned the bulk of his forces in place until air support could arrive. Chandrasekhar knew lying at this stage was pointless, but he was quickly coming up to the parts he'd have to... embellish some. Namely the time when Nahkarma put a sniper round through Logic's skull. To his right, he could see Nahkarma starting to squirm just a bit. Whitower noticed it as well. Armed with this unease, he pressed forward.

"When exactly was the order given to retreat? What circumstances surfaced made the mission a failure and that retreat was the only remaining logistical option?" Nahkarma was having a hard time keeping his wits about him now. Chandrasekhar did his best to hide his disappointment at his friend. It wasn't blatantly obvious to the casual observer, but anyone trained in spotting nervous ticks could have picked up on Nahkarma's subtle movements.

"Well," Chandrasekhar continued. "Our Commander took a round to the temple and ordered the retreat in his dying breath. We were getting shredded at this point anyway and there was no evidence to suggest - "

Whitower raised his hand slowly as if to comfort the two and say 'that's enough.' He was getting somewhere now. "Later on that night and into the next day, after the retreat was completed, what happened?"

"One of our own was killed during the night by a gunshot wound to the temple. Our coroner - he'd just finished examining Logic's body when it looks like he was murdered." Chandrasekhar paused. "We could tell it wasn't from insurgents, or we all should have been dead at that point."

"But you weren't killed then," Whitower interjected. "Which meant... what exactly?" Truth was the Captain already knew the answer. He wanted to hear it from the others.

"Meant the Private was killed by one of our own. A traitor." Chandrasekhar did his best not to flinch at the word 'traitor.' He never considered himself to be one, but he knew if he worded it any different Whitower would have gotten suspicious. Little did he know Whitower was already starting to piece things together.

"How did the squad react exactly? What course of action did everyone take?"

Chandrasekhar went on to explain the 'military court' style of proceedings where accusations were slung around and at the end of the day they'd either kill or tie up whoever had the most votes to his name. He went on and elaborated how these traitors would kill just about every night and as time ticked on Insurgents inside the squad planned ambushes and exploded bombs to maim others. He mentioned how merciary the medic was ousted as a Rogue Agent. He went on to describe the cook's poisoning of the Night-Watchmen in vivid detail, but Whitower brought him back to the topic at hand - the night kills.

"After merciary was executed. Did these attacks subside any?"

Chandrasekhar saw his opening. "Yes they did," with maybe just a touch too much enthusiasm in his voice. "That following night there wasn't any kills!"

"And the night after?" Whitower pushed onward.

"There was one, but it was the Insurgent Leader that got killed. Did everyone a favor I'd say."

Whitower didn't exactly care about 'who' at this point though he couldn't exactly argue against the 'doing everyone a favor' bit. "But the kills did continue. And by this point there are, what, six total men left? What became of them?"

Chandrasekhar knew he had to lie. Truth was Nahkarma killed the pilot with yet another sniper round and afterward Chandrasekhar snapped the neck of the surgeon. So he modified things a bit and claimed the Thunderfall missiles obliterated all four of them and that he and Nahkarma were lucky to escape the blast. Chandrasekhar sweated for the next few tense moments. Had Whitower sent anything to check the crater where the missiles exploded...

But Whitower relented and nodded his head. "Very well." He began walking towards the doorway. As he was halfway through exiting he paused, slowly raising a finger to his chin as if he'd just thought of something. "Oh, there's one more thing."

Hanging in the corner of the room hung an old CRT TV, obviously something that hadn't been dusted in quite some time. It clicked on and while the quality wasn't great, you could barely make out four figures on screen. It looked as though there had been an explosion recently, and one man came out from behind a rock, hands to the sky as if to celebrate. Another lay on the ground, apparently bleeding profusely while another tended to him. The fourth was standing a few feet away from all three, seemingly unscathed.

The footage continued. The one with his hands in the air suddenly dropped to the ground in violent fashion. The one currently tending to the injured one got up and looked beyond stunned, stumbling backwards and pointing a finger at the remaining standing figure. It looked like words were exchanged between the two before the remaining figure moved with lightning speed and snapped the other's neck. After his body crumpled to the ground, another figure appeared on screen with a long rifle slung over his soldier, shook hands with the other and the two moved off screen. Nahkarma, now riveted, was pale white.

"All wiped out by the blast, huh?" His words were dripping with anger. "And you thought you could get away with it. What was next? Kill off my entire crew?"

Chandrasekhar, knowing the gig was up, smiled. "Yea, something like that." He crossed his hands in front of his face, elbows now on the table. "You know, I had so much fun dissecting the squad man by man and watching them run foolishly amok." He snickered at the reminiscent thought. "The beauty is it isn't just Nahkarma and myself. I'd be willing to bet there's sailors aboard this ship committed to the cause just as much as we are. I may not live to see it, but we will prevail. And it will be glorious."

Whitower scoffed. "Enjoy your stay in the Brig gentlemen. The MP's ashore will deal with you once we dock back at base." He turned to leave.

Chandrasekhar, showcasing his brilliant reflexes once more, whipped out his now open Holy Book, revealing a cavity that held a small pistol. Whitower, his pilot instincts still humming, spun around himself and was now brandishing a .357 revolver. He pointed it at Chandrasekhar and fired a pair of shots in quick succession.

Two molten slugs emerged from the barrel and tracked toward Chandrasekhar's chest. Chandrasekhar had no sooner raised his small pistol when the rounds impacted home, slamming the Chaplain with so much force it knocked him and his chair backwards and onto the floor. Nahkarma reached for the fallen Chaplain's pistol, now out of his hand and laying on the table, when another shot rang out from Whitower's revolver.

That round exploded home in his temple, spattering the room with a gruesome scene that was replicated only in the footage that had replayed not more than a few minutes ago. Nahkarma's body fell to the ground away from Chandrasekhar and the gun now went tumbling into the far corner. Chandrasekhar, bleeding profusely but still alive, held his hands to his chest in a futile attempt to stop the bleeding. He stared down Whitower, teeth clenched to hold back the blood being coughed up as it filled his lungs and seethed at the Captain, partially smiling, partially enraged.

"You're j-just like m-m-me now... We...We'll prevail, the ship will b-be ours, our goal will be - "

"CRACK"

A final round to the temple finished the job. Wiping small traces of blood off of his face and uniform, he exited the room and turned to one of his aides who was frozen in shock and horror at the display of merciless violence. In a voice just above whisper level and still harboring a tinge of malevolence, he calmly spoke.

"Dump the bodies. Clean the mess up as best you can. This ain't over. Not by a long shot."

Welcome to Night of the Werewolves XXXIX: Impending Retribution
sequel to NOTW XXII: Road to Ruin

Game Specific Rules/Format:

This game, like the one before it, will not follow the traditional FFH storyline. Instead, it will take place aboard the Command Naval Vessel (CNV) Impending Retribution. Players will have their role assigned randomly and this role will remain hidden. In addition to concepts introduced in the prequel, there are two other significant additions to this game, which I will address in time. Speaking of time…

Time:

Time will operate as follows: 48-hour day phase, 24-hour night phase. The lone exception will be the first day where an additional 24 hours will be added for role-play and introduction. During the day phases (morning and midday), players will vote on who to execute (lynch) plus any items that may be present. The night phase is for player’s clandestine abilities to take place. Upon death there will be no role reveal (so feel free to role play as whatever), though a player’s innocence or guilt will be confirmed.

Player Statuses:

In the prequel, every player was one of three statuses: “Healthy,” “Bound,” or “Injured.” In this game the three make a return, but with “Imprisoned” replacing “Bound.”

Healthy: Character is healthy. No restrictions in player activity. All players will start healthy.
Imprisoned: Character is imprisoned in the Brig. Can vote in accusations but cannot carry night actions.
Injured: Character is injured in Sick Bay. Player cannot vote or carry out night actions.

During the day, there will be an accusation period. In the past, whomever has the most votes against them would be put to death. In this game, a considerable lead is needed to convict the person for sentencing. The following table will show the over/under of votes needed for sentencing:

With more than 20 players in the game: 4 or more votes than next leading vote getter.
With more than 15 players in the game: 3 or more votes than next leading vote getter
With more than 10 players in the game: 2 or more votes than next leading vote getter
With 10 or less players: No over/under.

As GM, I will keep players notified of the over/under # for each day.

For example: With 20 players, player a) gets 14 votes against him and player b) is second with 10 votes. Because player a) leads player b) by 4 votes, under the rules he will be put to death. But what if player b) has 11 votes?

This is where the Imprisoned character status comes into play. If the leading vote getter does not meet the requirements for death, he will instead be bound. Imprisoned players cannot carry out night actions, but are still alive and can vote in the next day's elections (this includes items and accusations). After one (1) night passes, the player will be let out and no longer restricted in his or her actions. Note: players imprisoned are still susceptible to other player's actions against them.

Injured players cannot participate in night actions or vote for anything, but are allowed to communicate in the forums. A player can be injured by a variety of things, of which will remain undisclosed for now. Once injured, a player will remain in this condition for two (2) nights, after which the player will have healed back to full health. Note: players injured are still susceptible to other player's actions against them.

I will keep a list of the Player Statuses on the front page of the Game Thread.

Items:

I am allowing item transfer to take place. To do this, both the sending party and the receiving party need to PM me of the transfer, something along the lines of “I will be sending the ‘X’ to this player” and “I will be receiving ‘X’ from this player.” Once both PM’s are received, I will send a confirmation PM to both players, and a separate PM to the new player outlining what the item does. This can be done during any phase and item possession will take place at the start of the next phase (in other words if the transfer occurs during a midday update, the new item holder will take possession of the item at the start of the next night phase).

I will also allow players to ‘show’ items to another player without giving up possession. However, the player seeing the item will not receive a PM detailing what the item does. To do this, it will again require two PM’s – one saying the holder is showing the item to this player, and the other player agreeing to view it. Once I have both PM’s, I will show the item to the other player.

Finally, I will allow items in a player’s possession to be put up for public vote. To do this, just PM me which item you’d like to put up for vote and the next morning phase I will insert a blurb about your character showing the item to everyone and putting it up for vote.

Also since this comes up every game, items cannot be thrown overboard or destroyed.

The above is the holdover from the previous installment. Everything after is new to this game and should be Read Multiple Times as these mechanics have not been introduced before, at least not in this detail.

Rank and Promotions:

As you may have guessed, this is a military themed game. As there was some confusion last game (at least initially), each player will have a rank and be eligible for Promotion. Your initial rank will be selected randomly, and under no circumstances should it be used as an indicator of who is what role (as remember, they’re private) and/or guilt. Certain ranks will have abilities associated with them, which will also remain private except to the player currently holding that rank. It will appear in the character card/PM you’ll receive once sign-ups are filled. If your character card does not have a Rank Ability listed, it means you currently do not have one. This has the potential to change as the game wears on and players are promoted and demoted. Subsequently, you also can lose a Rank Ability should you be promoted or demoted into a slot that does not have one. All Rank Abilities are night actions except where indicated on your character card.

Some Ranks will have the ability to Promote and Demote. In a nutshell, it gives a player the power to swap two other player’s ranks. In the event of a tie-breaker, that being two or more players with the Promote / Demote ability select the same player for promotion / demotion, the player with the highest rank giving the order will have the order go through. The others will be cast aside and not used. You cannot promote or demote yourself. All promotions/demotions will be broadcasted during the morning phase.

As players die, (yes, there will be deaths…) the Section Leader can promote someone originally underneath the recently deceased to take over the now-vacant Rank or, if they choose can leave the position vacant. If you are a Section Leader, you will be notified in your character card. Filling vacancies will occur during the midday phase and will be broadcasted in the thread.

As I’m still tweaking the rank structure (and will continue to until I get a definitive number of players), an illustration and/or list of ranks in the game will not be available at this time. However in the Game Thread there will be a finalized chart showing who is what rank.

Location/Compartments and Equipment:

Something I’ve always wanted to see implemented on a grand scale in NOTW, location will be a focal point in this game. As this takes place aboard a warship, there will be a number of “secure” compartments that require Keys, Abilities, or something else to enter. Some players will have access to all rooms, others with access to some, and others still will have access only to the Public Areas. Once I have finalized the Locations/Compartments, I will list here which are “Public” (no restrictions to entry) and “Secure” (certain requirements must be met for entry). There will be more on this in the “Abilities” Section of this post.

Public Sections are the Galley, Deck, and Sleeping Quarters.
The rest are Secure and have requirements that must be met to access.

Equipment:

In certain compartments, there will be pieces of equipment that certain players can interact with and ultimately affect everyone else aboard the ship. If players have the capability to interact with equipment, it will say so in the character card/starting PM. These pieces of equipment will be public and their status will be public as well. Status can be one of two things: Online or Offline. Also, a brief description will accompany each piece of equipment so players are aware what their significance is.

Abilities – Personal, Rank, Universal, and Special:

Personal Abilities:

In most cases, each player will have an ability listed in their character card/starting PM. This will be listed as their Personal Ability. This ability is (likely) unique to your character. All personal abilities are night actions and most are active abilities, meaning a PM will need to be sent to me in order to use it. Passive abilities are also in the game and will be used should game events/actions warrant its use – they do not require PM’s to activate. Any Passive abilities will be marked as such in your character card.

Rank Abilities:

As briefly touched on earlier, certain ranks will have abilities associated with them. These abilities will stay at the rank and not transfer with a player should they be promoted or demoted. In other words, so long as the Rank is occupied, the ability will stay in the game. It is highly possible some Rank Abilities will become vacant over time and not be used. Rank abilities will also not change as the game wears on. An example is if you start having a rank ability, then are promoted or demoted, the player who has taken your original rank will now have the rank ability you once held. You may do both your personal ability and rank ability during the same night phase.

Universal Abilities:

Every player, regardless of rank or personal ability, will have the ability to Search a compartment for an item. You may also choose to Hide an item in your possession in a compartment, providing you have access to it. If you choose to do this, it takes the place of any personal abilities per night phase (in other words, you cannot do both a Universal and Personal Ability during the same night. You may do both Universal and Rank however). In order to use this ability, you must 1) have access to the compartment you wish to search/hide item in and 2) name the item you are looking for to ‘guarantee’ finding it. You may do a Broad Search for anything, but there’s a chance you won’t anything should an item in fact be hidden. Knowing what you’re looking for helps a lot.

Also with players that can access particular rooms, they can Unlock a compartment so another can enter. This action requires a PM from both parties involved – one from the person with access stating they are opening the door for compartment “X” for player “Y’, and one from “Player Y” stating they will be entering compartment “X” with clearance from the one opening the compartment. Note neither player needs to be aware what the other is doing once the room is opened. Also, the player opening the door will not ‘see’ what the other player’s action is. Both PM’s must be received prior or during the night phase for both actions to take place in that night phase. In almost every case, a player may only visit one compartment per night.

I received a good question in my PM box, so I thought I add it here for clarification on this topic:

Does Unlocking a Door take up the Universal/Personal Ability Slot for the night? Can I unlock one room and search another? Can I unlock a room for someone else and also search it? Can I Unlock multiple rooms in one night for other people?

Yes, unlocking a door takes up your Universal/Personal Ability slot. However, I will allow you to perform an action inside the compartment you're opening as I view it as 'you're holding the door open.' In all cases, players in the same compartment at once will not see each other nor see what they're doing. Unlocking one room and searching another is not allowed. Also unlocking multiple rooms in one night is also not allowed.

Special Abilities:

Very rare in most instances but do exist. Use of these abilities are 'free' - they do not count toward any Personal, Rank, or Universal limitations.

Personal Goals:

Everybody has one. Also I will not confirm when a PG has been satisfied until after the game has ended. A little different than normal, but confirming during could have meta-gamy consequences.

General Rules:

Considering myself a veteran of sorts of NOTW, I’d like to see a swing back etiquette-wise back to the game’s roots. Personally, I’m not a fan of mafia-style Out Of Context (OOC) posts that have come to dominate some more recent games. As such:

NO POSTING OF ANY SORT AT NIGHT

I will be very, very strict with this. Your first post will earn you a public warning. A subsequent post (in the same night or after) will earn you an exit from the game. Posts at night serve no purpose except to spam and ultimately are rule-breaks. There is to be no public discussion at all during night phases. Period. So don’t do it. Behind-the-scenes discussion (PM’s or IM) is allowed of course.

Bringing me to my next pet peeve: Ghost Comments. Back in the day, dead players didn’t talk in the thread. Now it’s painfully commonplace and has gotten to the point where it’s distracting and possibly game-breaking in a few instances I’ve seen. I do not want to resort to it, but excessive (defined as “more than one”) ghost comments will be reported to the site moderators. I don’t want to go there so please, don’t do it.

If there’s anyone that takes issue with the two above rules, please don’t sign up. I want to GM the game, not police it.

Voting Format, Editing Posts, and Secret Votes:

Voting the standard NOTW way is fine (as in I vote Backwards Logic to die). I will only count your most recent vote, so strikethrough’s of old votes are not necessary. I had no issues in the previous game keeping track of this, so as long as your votes are bolded I will be happy. In fact, I would prefer if votes aren’t struck through but it’s not a requirement.

Supports will be handled the same way, except a support vote should be also bolded and cast in Green (as in, I support Backwards Logic).

Item votes will work the same way; just make sure you use the Color BB tags and Bold that vote as well. If there’s an item in Blue, voting it to Backwards Logic is done that way.

Voting to Abstain is also allowed.

Editing Posts

After much deliberation, I am allowing it, but only for grammar issues. Modifying any voting content, being accusations, supports, or item votes, is not allowed. Also the content of your post must not be altered in any way shape or form. Think before you post.

Secret Votes

There will be Secret Votes in this game. Some players may have abilities and/or items that make their vote worth more. In the Midday Post, I will not be listing how many secret votes are in play to better disguise those who may possess this ability. Any updated tallies will also not have these votes reflected in their count. Only in the Night Post will I list any secret votes present. Your best defense against this? Vote! If everyone is active and voting, the power of these bonus votes will be reduced.

On the topic of Quicktopics:

Any Quicktopics required for the game will be created by me. Player creation of Quicktopics is outlawed.

Private Messaging:

As with just about every NOTW game ever, there will be no forwarding, copying, and or pasting of any PM’s from any player, especially ones sent by me, the GM. You may paraphrase (as in, re-write in your own words what is already written), but no direct copying is allowed.

Messages to the GM:

As I’m expecting a ton of PM’s throughout the course of the game, for expediency’s sake and accuracy I am going to request the subject heading be as follows:

Orders for (player name) for Night Phase (number of phase).

Doing the above format will make my life a ton easier. Thanks in advance.

Sample Innocent PM:

Below is the sample innocent PM for your perusal.

Player: Backwards Logic
Role: Commander of Doomed Squad
Strength: 4 (anywhere between 1 – 4 base strength)
Alignment: Evil (Can be Good, Neutral, or Evil)
Victory Condition: (Innocent) The Impending Retribution successfully returns to port OR all threats aboard are neutralized.
Rank: Supreme Deity
Rank Ability: “Omniscience” – Knows everything that’s going on in game.
Personal Ability: (Passive) “Smoke Monster” – can appear as an apparition in game to dish out warnings.
Personal Ability: “Annihilatus Totalus” – can remove players from game that break rules. Requires use of Passive Ability first.
Item: CNV Impending Retribution – Gives plus eleventy-billion strength to the GM and is required for game to continue.
Personal Goal: Don't use either of your personal abilities.

Originally the Commander of Command’s ill-fated mission to kill ‘The One,’ Backwards Logic was reincarnated to GM NOTW XXXIX: Impending Retribution. He urges everyone to play by the rules and to have fun. Or else…

Order of 'Win'

1st Place: All three accomplished: VC, PG, and Survive
2nd Place: VC and Survive
3rd Place: VC and PG
4th Place: VC only
5th Place: Survive and PG
6th Place: Survive only
7th Place: PG only
Last: Accomplish nothing.

~~~
And thus concludes the boring yet highly important ruleset for this game. If you have any questions/comments/concerns about the game please feel free to post them here and I will do my best to answer them. Keep in mind I may not be able to answer something fully as it may reveal too much. Also, these rules are subject to change, though any major changes accompanied by a public announcement. And now…
