WTH is up with the galley?!? The AI's galleys seem to be able to defeat my frigates and privateers and even some ironclads easily! Correct me if i'm wrong, but shouldn't one cannon ball blow galley to smithereens? Galleys shouldn't even be able to attack modern warships! I'm sick and tired of seeing their stupid arrows sinking my ships while my cannonballs bounce off their balsawood planks!!!!

Also, it seems like caravels have an easier time sinking galleys than frigates!

What pisses me off more is that my ironclads can't seem to do a damn thing against AI galleons and galleys!!! Even other ironclads would be hard pressed to sink an ironclad! I seem to remembar a minor skirmish between the Monitor and the Merrimac.

Don't forget the invincible spearmen either!

That's what won Stalingrad for the USSR!

Half-naked men with spears...defeating Panzer Tiger II tanks!

I once achieved naval superiority over an enemy with large numbers of wooded warships when I brought my ironclads on line. But I did lose quite a few of them before the enemy gave up and stayed in port. It may have been a 4:1 ratio of lost woodens to lost ironclads. The ratio does seem low (should have been 7:1?).

BTW, I once destroyed a veteran Cavalry unit (with no retreat route) with a veteran Longbowman unit. Both full strength. That was the weidest result I've had with Civ III.

What I did was increase the hit points for veteran and elite units. Now, veterans have 5 hit points (instead of 4) and elite have 7 (instead of 5). That SHOULD make it harder for obsolete units to defeat modern units. It seems to work, but the veteran ironclad rush still beats my elite battleships from time to time.

For some reason, Battlefield Medicine doesn't seem to work for me. The enemy's ironclads heal up each turn, so it's not much use to bombard them with my battleships. My battleships slowly get bombarded down to one or two hit points, and then the attacks start.

Argh. That, and the crash that's ruined my best saved game yet, caused me to uninstall Civ 3. Maybe I'll put it back on after another patch.

I myself am somewhat dissapointed with the early warships, and if possible at all, don't build other ships than Battleships, Transports and maybe carriers.

This is one of the main reasons I hate Archilpelago maps ;)

From my experiences, to heal naval vessels you need to bring them into a city. If the city has a harbour, it heals in one round, if not, 1 HP / round.

Ironclads have an attack value of 4, and Galleys have a defense value of 1, so 4:1 seems about right.

A4 Vs D3.1 (at least). That's not a weird result. The longbowman has a better than even chance of winning.

I had consistent problems in the GOTM with my Vet battleships taking one and frequently two points damage trying to sink transports, and two, frequently three HP damage trying to sink ironclads. Submarines can't really sink anything.

I think that the attack v defence of a submarine should be altered - you can't defend against something that you haven't seen - but once you know its there, it should be more easy to sink. Eg double the attack strength, and shave a fraction off the defence.

And also in the GOTM - an AI ironclad attacked and sunk my nuclear sub. I thought they weren't supposed to be able to see them?

I have found in the ed that some units are designed as "defense" units. the units have a bonus of some kind when they are attacked.Put them in some kind of defensive terrain, or position, and they become nearly undefeatable in some cases. Also if say you have a battle ship, and 2 galleys attack, the first is destroyed and does one damage.(Unlikey in real workld applications but not in this game.) you will most of the time defeat the first galley, but the second one gets an attack bonus, because they attacked in a group, this will result in a galley sinking you battle ship.

I have always imagined that any unit in Civ represents a unit that continuously upgrades until there is such a large change in technology that a completely new unit becomes available ie the Battleship would be upgraded with a bank of cruise missiles, sam missile defences, short range anti cruise missile gun defences etc keeping upto date especially as it is still useful in shore bombardment. Same concept with Spearmen who would probably re-arm with guns (maybe buy there own as who would attack riflemen only armed with spears?) but who would be much less effective in using them than a properly trained and armed unit of riflemen. Upgrading costs in the game represent the retraining costs.

I lost a battleship to an ironclad. Actually thought it was funny. Obviously, I was winning handily.

i lost a nuclear sub to a galley. it was sitting still. i attacked it. i can't believe it.

Actually a Tiger II or MkV1b wasn't around during the battle for Stalingrad. :p
