Nuovo Impero Romano - Italy AoI 4.0

Great Job! whose next? Britain? Or are you focusing on conquering Mainland Europe for now? If that's the case will you go after France or finish off the weakened Austrians?

My plan is to work my way from the top of the food chain to the bottom.

First, once Austria's been canned so as to secure Central Europe, we shall attack Britain. France, Japan, America and Germany's fleets should keep them occupied, though I am prepared to lose much of my investment in Amsterdam, which is building submarines to give Britain a hard time.

As I have positioned stacks of naval units around the Med, we will be able to sink countless ships all at once. I will also ferry several Maxims into Africa so as to give us an edge. My artillery will also sink any British ships that are on the coastline, which they usually are. The AI's constant use of transports to ferry units back to the homeland will make this strategy bite them hard. The fact fleets ignore you if they're transporting units also makes things easier.

Once Britain's crumbled - my allies will likely do a lot of the fighting while I do a slow advance into Egypt/India - I will rally Germany against France, the other major colonial power, which has recently been scoring victories against Britain all over the place. We will flank France and devour the once proud Gallic Rooster. I will try and take a bit of Africa, of course.

Then, Germany will find itself all alone and surrounded.

The greatest concern is France because the sheer size of their colonies likely means they transported a lot of units back into France(as the AI secures raw materials abroad, then ships them back home, while humans just send the materials home and secure them there). I've already seen the pain of colonial powers in Spain, and they have crappy troops only a step above Italy, Austria or the Balkans'.

I'll declare a year of peace before this three-step plan, of course, as I need to build up my troops more. I have plenty of artillery(though could use more, but thankfully arty is cheap!), but that the Turks actually posed a threat to my Corps units means France will be a bloodbath.

1906 Part II - Demise of the Bear

Spoiler :
Week 9, Japan got Cuba to declare war on Italy. It was debated building a fleet in Iberia to take over the Spanish colonies in the Caribbean as well as get rid of the Cubans.

As such, an invasion force was prepared - 9 transports, loaded with Corps, Artillery, Maxims, Cavalry and Infantry. A small fleet would accompany them to Cuba, where all the inhabitants, once at war with themselves, would be brought under Italy's thumb.

Meanwhile, the legislature approved a "Naval Reinvigoration Act," that is, a bill to churn out one new battleship per month on average. Italy had long neglected her fleet in her continental wars.

The French finally got out of Italy's way, thus enabling the quick, cheap fall of Yaroslavl. Another path to Novgorod had been opened!

No losses, Tashkent was seized, leaving Dushanbe isolated from the rest of Russia, with the harsh mountains of the Raj preventing any resources from coming in that way.

Week 13, SIAM declared war on Italy.

Week 13 was uneventful, just troops moving onward.

Week 17, the French took Novgorod. While a nuisance, it wasn't the end of the world; St. Petersburg, capital of the "great" Russian Empire, would surely wear them down. The French government was lazy, attempting to block Italian efforts, but they forgot one thing: a single tile of Trenches. All the artillery were brought against it!

They were curbstomped, and the Trenches taken for Italy. It would now be possible to attack St. Petersburg and destroy any credibility the Romanovs had left.

Meanwhile, in Central Asia, Turkestan would soon rise from the ashes of Russia, but first, it would need a few more cities.

Ah, and it began! Russia had lost its southern border! With that, artillery were ordered to assault the connected by rail city of Bishkek, which would drive the Russians from the area.

Luigi Amadeo proved his prowess in the battle of Bishkek, and running back to Italian territory, raised a new Corps for Italy, which was used to crush the city. 4 Russian Engineers were dispersed in the process, crippling Russia's economic situation ever the more.

The Chinese were amazed at how quickly the Russians, who always held so much sway over their eastern and northern borders, had collapsed. Italy now was actively executing some of Russia's sphere of influence rights as its own, and the Romanovs couldn't do a thing about it.

The King of Italy promised the Peoples of the various territories the Russian War of Aggression would soon come to an end - Central Asia was to be secured but not expanded into any further, and once Finland and St. Petersburg were taken by the Coalition powers, peace would be inked. The alliance vs. the Russians had expired with every ally, and as such, the War could be safely dropped out of.

All irrigation works in Iberia had been replaced with mines by Week 17, thus surging production at the expense of a few lives. It would now be possible to build up Free Russia.

The Caribbean campaign would be a stroke of genius - Spain, Hispaniola, and Cuba, all foes of Italy, were located there. Six cities would fall, one after another, one island after another, leaving Italy with prime real estate in the West and giving it a window on the Americas.

All over the world, states dropped out of the war against Russia - or the First World War as some called it, with Russia and its allies Tibet, Spain, Uruguay Cuba, Hispaniola and Japan on one side and everyone else on the other. The USA, the Mahdists, and states in Latin America chose peace over war.

The defenses of St. Petersburg were too robust to be destroyed, but more artillery were brought in to compensate.

Midway across the Atlantic, a Cuban ship was spotted. The navy naturally said "hi" to them, via artillery shells that sank them instantly.

Week 25, Hispaniola asked for peace, but asked for 60 gold as well. They were denied.

News arrived San Juan had been taken by the Brits. Logically, Hispaniola would be the target then. Germany, as well, took over Stockholm again.

In Russia, Moscow was a city of 50,000,000 people, but only ~60% of them could be fed due to massive industrialisation. The industrialisation of Russia would decrease Russia's population immensely over the years, but would also make it one of the most useful regions of the Italian Empire.

Siege of St. Petersburg

It was known that St. Petersburg's defenders were numerous. Of course, with ~25 attacks and plenty of artillery, the city could be taken.

The City Guards were killed by a Corps first, of course.

However, many Machinegunners stood ready to fight. Worn down, they were massacred by cavalry.

Infantry took up the fight, but were cut down. The last band almost held off a unit, but the Elite Italians were called in and managed to just barely defeat the Russians.

The city's fall was a blow to what little remained of Russian morale. The Czar and his family fled to the East, and set up a new capital in Mukden, China.

Meanwhile, it was noticed the German fleet was actively harassing London. Had the British fleet finally met its match?

With no losses, Helsinki and Joensuu were occupied.

Weary of war, the Romanovs were phoned up, as were the generals of the Japanese military...

The Russians, now with a meager 600 gpt, agreed to part with 12 gold up front, but refused any gpt payments, likely because their economy was so unstable. As a corrolary, Tsarevich Alexei, the Czar's only son, was turned over to Italian custody. Being too young to rule a hypothetical Russian puppet state, however, a Russo-Italian regency council was formed to carry out his duties. Democracy came to Russia, while the rich monarchial tradition remained. Alexei's transfer to occupied Russia was a wise move - within the year, the Romanov family and nearly all of its allies and relatives would be exterminated in Free Russia, which would succumb to the Revolution.

Japan, meanwhile, also accepted peace. They demanded tribute, and Italy, rolling its eyes, gave them a paltry 40 gold. Japan claimed victory in a pointless war, but they'd get theirs eventually.

A huge variety of states would be carved from Russia's territory. Apart from the Republic of Novgorod, a puppet of France, you had the likes of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Circassia and Turkestan. Russia remained as a nation, but its government was decentralised immensely, rendering it more like a patchwork of autonomous provinces than anything else, over which Alexei would rule as Czar come his age of majority.

Now, with Russia written off as a foe and their aggression having been repaid in full, the longtime enemies of Italy, the Habsburgs, could be finished off.

1906 Part III - Habsburg Hamburger a la Hispaniola

Spoiler :
With the demise of Russia as a credible power, it was time for other fronts to be focused on. Troops landed in Hispaniola, a small contingent of 3 Maxims, 2 Cavalry, 1 Infantry, 1 Corps, and some supporting artillery. They were to attempt and take the Dominican Republic, and failing that, harass the island in general. More troops were already en route.

Week 33, Britain and Germany agreed to peace, but knowing the submarine routes, it was unlikely this would last.

Mexico also declared war on Italy, citing that Hispaniola's falling to the Italian alliance would endanger the sovereignity of all American nations.

Austria's defenses were reported on by spies - 4 Austrian Infantry, 6 Home Guards, 3 City Guards, 18 Hungarian Infantry, 18 Maxims, and a few artillery pieces scattered across 5 cities. In other words, 10 units per city. It was decided to wipe out their Balkan possessions first in Yugoslavia, so as to secure the region and enable a noose movement around Austria proper. Several of the units, furthermore, were in trenches outside Austria, so they could be ignored.

The city's fall signalled the end of the Austrian Kingdom of Yugoslavia, which was integrated with Bulgaria and Slavonia into the new Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Hungary came under attack next, being the smallest of the three Kingdoms. Their City Guards were picked off, setting back their defenses. A full-scale assault soon followed.

Week 37, the Boers and Portugal signed a mutual defense pact, more or less seizing control of South Africa's future.

The Austrians killed a lone Home Guard in the Trenches; the response was brutal - Germany and Scandinavia being brought in as friends.

Troops soon pushed into Austria. Their machinegunners and City Guards, while numerous, were cut down with rejuvenated Corps units from Russia.

Still with infrastructure damage outside the city from the first war years ago, Austria's capital was taken after bombardment killed much of its population and levelled many of its industrial and financial buildings.

Austria now had only Lulea and Prague to its name; the Union of Bohemia and Habsburg Sweden naturally forming.

To finish off Week 37, peace was inked with the Lowlands - now pretty much Indonesia - with them giving 22 gpt. That left Italy at war with La Plata, Austria, Spain, Uruguay, Siam, Cuba and Mexico.

Uruguay, meanwhile, paid 30 gpt for peace. They paid, pretty much, simply to avoid Italian interference in South America, where Brazil was flexing its muscles and strongarming its neighbors.

La Plata also agreed to peace, paying 22 gpt.

All 169 units of the force assaulting the city of Prague quickly took up residence in the area once the government had fled. Troops were stationed in the castle; much of the wealth was removed prior to this to keep any opportunistic soldiers from stealing.

The Austrian Archduke was found cowering behind a statue in the Castle. Brought before the Italian King and his Majesty's government, the Archduke pleaded for mercy, knowing that if he was wanted dead, his body'd be cold within the hour.

Fortunately, the Italians were not bloodthirsty. The Archduke was extended an alliance; he would take power as the Archduke of Vienna, King of Austria, when the time was right. In the meantime, he'd merely be the first among equals in the Austrian nobility, but would be given more power when the "transformation," whatever that meant, would come.

Week 45, after a protracted siege, at last, all of Santo Domingo's defenders were redlined; they sustained injury quicker than they could recover it after the last two months. As such, the city was now ripe for invasion!

The City Guards and machinegunners were picked off by a Corps.

The Dominican Republic was swiftly replaced with the Kingdom of Hispaniola, which was ruled by the King of Italy, with a viceroy, styled the President, appointed by the King and confirmed by the People.

Week 49, Russia and Germany made peace in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. The new Soviet government hoped for a quick end to all wars so as to rebuild the war-drained Russian resource base.

Hispaniola's demise came quickly and unexpectedly due to some lucky bombardment numbers. The City Guards, gunners, and weak Home Guardsmen were all picked off, ending Haiti and all of "Free" Hispaniola.

The next stop would be wartorn Cuba, split in a three-way war between the American-backed United States of Cuba, the late Jose Martí's Republic of Cuba, and Spanish Cuba, which had become virtually autonomous since the fall of Madrid.

Most likely; that lets me get a foothold against the American position in the long-term and British Mexico in the short.

1907 - The Calm Before the Storm

Spoiler :

The United States, sensing opportunity, attacked Britain as soon as New Years' celebrations were over, giving the British an encore of fireworks. The strike was pre-emptive; the USA did NOT like British presences along both borders.

Britain had 154 battleships to Italy's humble 38. Whenever Italia decided to attack Britain, as many ships as possible would have to be eliminated. Their 333 Col. Infantry and 120 Col. Cavalry also made them formiddable.

Meanwhile, "controlled sea lanes" were established in the Med. Britain was forced to take a certain route - all along the coastline - to get through the sea. This in turn made all these ships vulnerable to artillery from the shore.

Which would be necessary, as the hypothetical German Allies had only 12 Battleships.

Week 5, Soviet Russia declared war on Japan. With the Romanovs - sans the Italian-protected Alexei - executed, Vladimir Lenin sought to expand the USSR at the expense of its neighbors, and Japan was a natural candidate.

Mexico, at the best of Japan but also eager to reclaim its lost lands, declared war on Britain. The eruption of a volcano just to the north of Mexico City however, naturally made many question if God approved. Given that the United States had already liberated Hermosillo and had taken the Canadian West, Britain wouldn't hold out for long!

Brazil likewise declared war on Britain of its own accord, seeking to end the Red Menace.

Italian troops from Hispaniola saw an opening and took it, adding Italians to the ugly stew of Cuba, which already had America, Spanish, British and Cuban presences. Fleets were everywhere, and massive amounts of British troops were poisted to take American Havana. It was hoped that, in the midst of the chaos, the Italian Empire could bring peace and order.

Week 9, the Filipinos declared war on Italy, siding with Spain. Oh the irony.

Meanwhile, the Hispaniolan Kirov Crisis began, as two airships took up residence in Port-au-Prince. This would be an expansion of Italian power in the region, without the time-consuming process of building a fleet.

Britain lost the Bahamas and more of Canada to the USA, which was rapidly turning into a beast.

89 units took up residence in Habsburg Lulea. The independent Habsburg monarchy was no more, though members of the family would continue to rule under close Italian watch in varying regions of Europe. Lulea was simply declared the free Duchy of Lulea, too small to be declared a new Sweden.

With the Austrians out of the way, peace was made with Siam at the price of 10 gpt, out of their income of 90 gpt.

An assault on Santiago began with cavalry butchering the City Guards, worn down from the American forces.

Meanwhile, the USA declared war upon the Soviets in Japan's defense, seeing that the Brits were no challenge. Mexico, showing reinvigoration, retook Monterrey.

While Week 13 was unlucky for the Spanish and Cubans, it was the exact opposite for Italy!

First, Santiago was seized with no losses.

The already-decimated Cuban forces were cut down. Santiago and Nuevitas were reorganised into the Kingdom of Cuba, which laid claim to the West, and was known as East Cuba. The British, meanwhile, established the Cuba colony, or West Cuba, which enjoyed a high degree of autonomy to weaken the impetus for defection.

Two empty Corps existed in the Cuban and Hispaniolan islands.

The Italian High Command called an emergency meeting. With treaty obligations finished, peace was made with Mexico for 5 gpt and with Spain for 26 gpt. The Filipinos refused to acknowledge the Italian envoy, but with only two cities, they were easily ignored.

But the meeting wasn't about treaties and diplomatic niceties. It was about the long-promised Rebirth. The dawn of a new era. The proclomation of the New Roman Empire. And it would be built on the ashes of Britain.

1907 Part II - The Duel of the Wolf and Lion

Spoiler :
The table was set and the festivities were about to begin. All that was needed was the main course - a declaration of war.

To score points, however, the war would ideally appear defensive. As such, with the RoP torn up, Britain was phoned, due to using the Mediterranean, proudly Italian, to transport their raw materials back home to Albion.

The Brits took the bait and declared war on Italy, who would soon see to it every nation on Earth was at war with them. It was time for the Pax Britannica to have a date with the guillotine!

King Victor Emmanuel III, a mere 37, stood before a crowd of delegates from all the allies of Italy, as well as from all the other nations of the world, sans Britain(due to the war) and the USSR(due to them boycotting capitalist nations).

Having taken their seats, His Majesty began, "Greetings friends and allies of Rome. I am pleased to see that you were all able to attend this Conference. It is of great importance, and all the nation-states on our god-given Earth will find it useful to listen to what I am about to say."

The delegates naturally became attentive at that.

"Less than fourty-eight hours ago, the British Empire declared a war of aggression upon Italy. Nations all over the world strive to repulse the British before they become too much of a menace. The Americans fight with their Mexican brothers in North America, the Brazilians in the South, the Portuguese in Europe, the Japanese and the Filipinos in Asia. Many nations have sought to enter this war of containment, not out of desire, but out of necessity."

There were some whispers amongst the crowd, believing that the King was likely going to ask for aid against Britain.

"However," He raised his voice, silencing his guests, "I do bring good news in these dark times, the light that peers through the clouds, shining towards a brighter tomorrow. The embassies of all the nations I rule over, met with me earlier this evening, to discuss something else, and that is what is to be announced."

The King extended his hand to his side, and an aide respectfully bowed as he gave the Italian monarch a large, ornate scroll. Whatever it was, it must have been important if they would use an antiquated document.

He slowly unfurled it, reading it.

"We, the Prime Ministers of all the nations presided over by His Majesty Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy, hereby make the following statement: Three Romes have existed, and how fitting it is that they would all be re-united under the banner of Italy, the first Rome, in such a glorious alliance.

"With the British aggression in mind, it has become quite clear that the current alliance needs more cohesion if it is to survive the onslaught of the world's foremost power. With that in mind, for greater stability, security, and prosperity for the nations under this personal union..."

He paused, and all the others were quite attentive. Many could've sworn they felt a chill...

"King Victor Emmanuel III hereby steps down from all his thrones besides that of his Italian homeland, and native Kings shall rule in his stead."

The crowd was naturally whispering - the era of personal unions had enjoyed a revival, only for the founder of those unions to dissolve it! They were quickly silenced as the King smiled.

"He shall now be not only King of Italy, but Emperor of the Roman Empire, to be established from all the states he once presided over."

Those whispers seemed more vocal now - Rome?!

"Effective immediately." He rolled up the scroll, and it was just as quickly taken away as it had been brought in. He motioned for the crowd, full of gossip, uproar, and every emotion imagineable, to settle down.

"Gentlemen. It is for the good of Italy, her allies, and indeed the entire world, that this miraculous event comes to pass. The signatures have been collected, and this process is entirely on the new provinces' accord. With that in mind... let us proceed to the feast I have arranged for us all. We have pacts to discuss."

---

Rome's setup was simple:

-Each province was mostly free from central rule, but could not pass laws contrary to the "pooled powers" of the federal government - taxation, highways and railways, foreign policy, the military, trade regulations, etc.

-Each province sent one Senator to Rome, and an amount of Tribunes based on population. The Senate and Tribunate were given a great deal of power, the argument being that they represented so many diverse provinces and groups that abuse would be difficult.

-The Emperor ruled as head of state of the entire Empire, appointing the Chancellor with approval of both houses. The Emperor had extensive power, mainly in that he signed treaties(with Senatorial approval) and had the power to veto legislation(but could be overruled by 2/3 majorities in both houses). He also had power over the military. The Chancellor controlled everything else, but the Emperor could delegate some of his responsibilities to the Chancellor if necessary.

-The Emperorship was NOT hereditary, with a successor instead being named and confirmed by the Senate as heir, while actual succession required the confirmation of the Tribunate. This was in line with the idea old Rome had some of its greatest years under adopted, rather hereditary, Emperors.

-Each province was ruled over by a monarch - with a title of their choice - who was appointed by the Emperor and confirmed by plebiscite, or, failing that, provincial legislature. The monarch's power varied, but was usually limited to ceremonial duties. The Monarch generally appointed the governor with approval from his province's legislature; the pair were essentially the Emperor and Chancellor of their own province.

-Provinces were free to setup their government however they wished, but it needed to be a constitutional monarchy with a legislature and a monarch; what powers the monarch possessed were up to the provinces.

-The Constitution enshrined basic liberties to curb oppression, in line with other liberal Constitutions.

---

King Victor Emmanuel was never power hungry, always staying within the limits of the constitution, and he accepted the Emperorship with a heavy heart. He insisted on the idea of the peoples' rights and interests coming first, which was why he had made sure to argue for as much democracy as possible in the conquered regions. He had accepted the crowns solely to stay within the good graces of the various ministers, and control their excesses. (Note: The Real life Victory Emmanuel III actually did renounce the crowns of conquered nations as soon as the opportunity presented itself!)

Now, he would have to fight the British Empire for world domination.

Formal alliances were inked with every nation on Earth; many already had low opinions of the British, and as such, were easily swayed. Britain may have had the world's largest... everything, but would now have to fight in every corner of the globe to stay in control.

Orders were given to seize Cuba. Once Cuba was secure, the base of operations could be used to harass the British Antilles. In Africa, Maxims would secure Libya, while Eritrea and Somaliland were well protected. The Middle East would be secure as well, given the low amount of troops in Arabia; this would mean the Eastern border was all that needed defending.

The most dire area was the Caribbean, where 28 battleships were ready to attack at any minute! Fortunately, most were busy doing escort duty, and if they came too close, artillery would tear them to pieces.

Half the royal navy, it seemed, was stuck in Gibraltar. Getting rid of the city would crush the Brits.

The attacks began with the sinking of 1 Transport and 1 unit.

Medina's fall raised the death toll to 3 units. It was now possible to go from the Levant and Iraq to Arabia without delay!

Unguarded Malta brought the death toll to 3 ground units and 2 Battleships.

Havana brought it to 7 ground units and 2 Battleships. A third Corps was spawned from the battle, meaning Cuba now had one Corps per city.

With sunk transports, the death toll skyrocketed to 20 units.

That became 21 with Alexandria's capture. It was readily apparent that the British forces in Egypt were minimal, having been worn down by constant war with the Germans, French and Mahdists.

And 25 with Suakin.

27 with Cairo and Wadi Hafa. British Egypt had been taken in less than a month; this was attributed to their less than desirable troop numbers. Wadi Hafa had only a single Colonial Sentry to protect it! It did however, kill 1 Colonial Cavalry of Italy's. Big whoop!

It became 34 casualties with more sunk transports.

Off the coast of Cuba, sailors knew all too well chances were they'd be sunk. As such, a pre-emptive strike against British battleships was authorised; the airships, meanwhile, would be airlifted to Brussels. From there, they could raid the British countryside and destroy its sources of Coal, thus eliminating Britain's industrial capacity.

Some of Britain's dreadnoughts were sunk, bringing the total British casualties to 34 land units and 5 Battleships. One Italian battleship was lost, thus making Italian losses 1 land unit and 1 Battleship.

A few torpedos and artillery made British losses 53 land units and 24 ships.

With all artillery used up, troops were deployed to Africa. Algeria was, like Egypt, lightly defended, so a few cavalry and artillery here and there would crush the Brits and put more land under the Empire's rule.

Great Job on the Russians and the British and those upstarts in the Caribbean!

I have two questions though:

When did Scandinavia gain Cork? and

When did Austria gain a city in Scandinavia?

Austria gained Lulea wayyyyy back in the 1890s.

Cork has historically had rotating ownership between Britain, France and Scandinavia during the game. Kind of like the Bahamas always falling to one power or another(Even the Cubans controlled it for one or two turns)

What's shocking is how weakly-defended Egypt was. Most cities didn't even have a single Col. Infantry!

Algeria's a bit more, and France is moving in on that pie. I'll try and take Casablanca, but it sounds like it'll be hard to wear down. Tons of ships are in it, however, so it'd be worth it.

Speaking of, goes to show how dumb the AI is. Their fleet is so massive and they bottle up half their fleet in a single city or two. Gibraltar and Casablanca must hold at least half the British battleships! Sad, because Gibraltar is very weakly defended but the Portuguese have taken up positions there.

It would be awesome if you posted some zoomed out screenshots of your empire. :)

1907 Part II - Heavy Bleeding

Week 21, France retook Algiers, the key city of French Africa. Ah well; it was onto Casablanca.

The Italian Renaissance resumed with the Antarctic Expedition. Such was New Rome's wealth and influence that even in the middle of a huge war, explorers were mapping out Antarctica for the Emperor.

The British lost two ships off Sicily.

Meanwhile, the Brits landed 8 units in Cuba, and 8 units in Hispaniola. Thankfully, plenty of artillery and Corps were ready to greet them.

The Cuban invasion force was wiped out; TWO Corps were spawned from it.

The Battle of Hispaniola spawned a THIRD and FOURTH Corps unit.

16 British units dead, with no losses and several Corps gained. New Rome now commanded 17 Corps, 8 of which were located in the Caribbean.

With little movement on the Persian front, the Emperor saw to it that Pakistan be attacked to give some more buffer.

Kandahar's fall brought the death toll to 19 British units in Week 21.

=====

While I've come far with Italy, I find myself suffering the usual apathy one gets once they're far enough into a game. I cannot leave a save, lamentably, as I have overwritten it and all the autosaves have likewise been replaced.

Of course, to grant the last request of my followers, a few shots of the Italian imperium:

Check out them Italian West Indies! Where's your Monroe Doctrine now, Murica?!
