After struggling to keep this game running longer than 20 mins before inevitably CTD in the Modern era I have hit on a solution which is keeping my NVidia GeForce FX5700 running smoothly and at maximum game resolution.

Run the game in a Non-Maximised window. You can do this by editing the full screen option in the Civ4.ini file in the My Documents folder. Set fullscreen = 0.

For some reason if the window is maximised the game becomes totally unstable again, so don't double click that maximise box :)

Oh and if you need to stop the wonder movies stuttering, turn off anti-aliasing.

Hope some of this works for others too.

How do I turn off anti-aliasing?

Same here!

I have nVidia GeForce and I'm experiencing random slowdowns on a huge map 18 civ modern era 1900's game.

It's funny because for a few seconds the game maybe slow but will be fine for the next 5-10 minutes. And then for a few seconds I get a slowdown again. And I speed up again.

Sounds like a mystery since I've too notice it run better at times. Also graphics setting makes absolutely no difference in framerate on my pc.

how about playing Medal of Honor or Call of Duty and pretend it was the Nazis who design the engine for civ 4. Besides this, you just need patience to wait for a patch.

I've left everything on default. The only thing I've changed is I got rid of auto-saving which is annoying anyway and I've never crashed and I always remember to save the game before I leave so there's no use for it.

I have a feeling that it's because of the programs running in the background. But I can't figure out which!

When i play it in a non maximised window the bottom section of the screen isn't visible. It's already on the lowest resolution possible. Also, i can't edge scroll when im playing, which is annoying. Any help?
