Obama to offshore oil drill in on East Coast of US...is he a Republican or Democrat?

Because the West Coast and New England are liberal and don't want drilling off their shores?

I think its a near perfect compromise.
Tough crap. It's not on STATE property at that point, it is national territorial waters. Screw 'em and fire up the drills.

Seriously, I really do hope they find the biggest most massive oil field in the world right under waldon pond, enough to guarantee oil for America for 1,000 years so all the lefties will see their precious little pond drilled in.

(P.S. - Yeah, I ahve been there and seen it. It's a pond. )

Look. The reality is that Obama is a moderate Democrat. But more importantly, he is pragmatic and a realist – two things that are very different from either end of the political spectrum in this country.

Yeah, now were closer to being free from the shackles of OPEC

What was his stance during the 2004 and 2007 political seasons?

I have no idea. But his stance when he ran for his current job is the one that counts. Especially since a position on off-shore drilling from a prospective Senator from a mid-west state probably isn’t all that important to his constituents. Last I checked there isn’t a need for off-shore drilling in Lake Michigan…

I'm fine with this, as long as the funds eventually lead to the building of alternative energy facilities.

Okay. He hasn't given me my check yet for my personal financial bailout. I'd be content with $150,000.

He was a US Senator before becoming president. Most of the off shore drilling talk occured during that period.

I guess I fail to see your point. When he ran for President, he voiced his favorable opinion for expanding domestic off-shore oil drilling. He was elected President after voicing this opinion. He has now made good on that opinion. What his position was prior to running for President, especially as a representative from a state that does not have an ocean shore, is quite frankly irrelevant. (not that I know what that position was because I am too lazy to look and you have yet to provide it…)

IIRC, the Bush White House estimated that all the likely off shore oil that the US might profitably develop might lower gas prices by $0.02/gallon. So it's no big deal either way.

PROTIP: context can be understood from also reading the posts that I quote.

Yes, you were saying he would do what quoted from you rather than abolish all taxes. He hasn't and won't do either.

Actually, he is anything that he thinks will get him some poll numbers. He is just all over the place as a result.

Anyway, this is just another promise he has broken. From a related news story on it:

In June 2008, then-Sen. Obama told reporters in Jacksonville, Florida, "when I'm president, I intend to keep in place the moratorium here in Florida and around the country that prevents oil companies from drilling off Florida's coasts. That's how we can protect our coastline and still make the investments that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and bring down gas prices for good."

Actually, he is anything that he thinks will get him some poll numbers.

If that is the case, how come he didn’t abandon the whole health care thing when some polls suggested people didn’t like it?

I fail to see this as a persuasive argument.

From August 1, 2008:

ST. PETERSBURG — U.S. Sen. Barack Obama said today he would be willing to open Florida's coast for more oil drilling if it meant winning approval for broad energy changes.

"My interest is in making sure we've got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices," Obama said in an interview with The Palm Beach Post.
Presidential race

"If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage - I don't want to be so rigid that we can't get something done," Obama said.

Two can play the “lets find a single quote to make a point” game.

Great news, we've needed this for a long time!
Good to see Obama being more centrist of late...

Gulf of Mexico, Alaska and Atlantic coast! Interesting those are the coasts of red states! Well the Atlantic coast is partially red.

Centre-right is only "pragmatic and realist" to fellow centre-rightists. The far right considers themselves pragmatic and realistic, and the centre-left considers itself pragmatic and realistic. It is a purely subjective qualification.
