Obsolete Defenses.. or not?

I hope I'm posting this in the right forum, I'm ultimately looking for a mod that takes this into account. I've just dusted of Civ IV and reinstalled it, and now I'm more addicted than ever. :)

I"m realizing that situations can occur, say when you've just discovered gunpowder, or whichever techs cause things like city walls and Castles and such to go obsolete, while your enemies are still using catapults and guys on horses with sharp pointy things. This usually happens when you've been cheating.. not that I ever do that. :shifty: But if your playing a Marathon game or similar situation where civs are staying at the same tech level for long periods of time, this can become an issue.

Your city walls are obsolete, you can't build new ones anymore, and your enemies are still attacking you with units that could be fought off more effectively with said walls. Is there a mod that takes this into acount and lets your build otherwise obsolete structures that could still be effective against enemy units? Thanks!

That's a good question, because I too have come across this problem (I don't cheat, just play on low difficulty...which could be considered cheating, as it makes the AI laughably pathetic... :D ), and it'd be nice if there was a simple workaround for this. I mean, IS there a way to make structures obsolete against units but still be able to build them?

I am not aware of a mod that does as you require but it would not be difficult to make one. All you need to do is alter in the xml the obsolecence of walls and/or castles BUT also make all modern or post gunpowder units ignore walls and castles. thus you can still build walls even into the future era tho it will only be worth the hammers against pre-gunpowder units. Anyway it would be easily modded just with the xml.

Ah, of course! Thanks, zenspiderz! That will work nicely. :)

The AI will probably still build them - maybe an SDK modification to add a defence-against-old-units tag is called for
