Obsolete Monastaries

I was watching "The Me In Team" play Civ 4 on YouTube, and I'm pretty sure he built a monastary immediately before discovering Scientific Method, ... which confused be because I thought Method made the monastary obsolete.

So what does "obsolete" mean. You just can't build them anymore, but the ones that you have still work? Does this apply to other obsolete building as well? (Monuments?) It seems to me that obsolete Wonders are no longer effective. It seems odd to have a different rule for buildings. I have deliberately delayed Scientific Method in-game because I didn't want to lose the 10% bonuses from all my monastaries.

I'm assuming that he wasn't just crazy, ... because I think he was playing on Immortal.

Can anyone offer a clarification/explanation?

(First time poster, but I've lurked for YEARS, and years and years ...)

So no science or culture from the obsolete building(s), ... and no hammers from the AP, or any of the other wonder benefits.

This is helpful, Thank you. I was well on my way down the road of misunderstanding.

Now I need to go back and watch the "Lets Play" because this doesn't make sense to me as a strategy decision. I need to revisit the context, and try to understand his decision with these insights. It seems crazy to build a monastary, just so you can make missionaries, ... and TMIT doesn't seem to be the crazy type.

Thanks again.

I would be curious to know about the AP hammers actually. Technically its still a religious building and should give it as its not specific to the monastary.

You do get the 2:culture: per turn from the monastery even after it obsoletes, but it's not a cost-effective way to gain culture. Rechecking some of my older games, I'm certain that the 2:culture: and the ability to build missionaries are the only two benefits from obsolete monasteries.

You definitely lose the AP hammers.

Yeah, all you get once monasteries go obsolete is the ability to build missionaries and the base culture. You lose everything else, including the bonus culture from Sistine Chapel :(

Not having seen the particular clip that the OP mentions I can't comment about that specific situation. However, there is a further reason to build a monastery just before Scientific Method; if I have a religion that is not my state religion I may still want to ensure I can build missionaries in that religion at a later date if I go to Free Religion, and want to get the benefit of multiple religions in my cities.

I think it's a good idea to have at least one monastery of each religion has entered your empire. A part of +1 :) with FR, if you go for a Cultural Victory (which I believe wasn't the case), Cathedral type buildings add 50% :culture: each one. So if you spread your religions enough, and build temples here and there, you can construct 4/5 such buildings in your three most cultural cities for a 200-250% :culture:

yeah, thats really strong reason for me to try to get all religions I have in cities to my 1-3 biggest.. just to have option to build all these temples, cathedrals... even without culture victory, border fighting with many religions is much easier task than spending 10-20% of all money I have...

Saw the game and to me it looked simply as bad play by TMIT. The game was easily won so guess he didn't think much about what he was queuing up.

And hording monastries is not worth it. Same with cathedrals. Cultural borderfights are not worth it late-game. You end up spending enormous amounts of hammers for just a few tiles when the city could be building something useful. Either take the land by force or simply accept the loss of the tiles.
