:queen: Welcome to the OCC Club Mk 3: Bride of OOC Club. :queen:

The purpose of the club is to have some fun playing the One City Challenge, where the human player gets a single city. That's it. You can't build a settler, and any cities that you conquer or culture flip are automatically razed. To make up for this, you can have five National Wonders in your city instead of only two, and buildings and wonders that require a certain number of buildings to be built (Statue of Zeus, Cathedral, Oxford) will only need one. All victory types are available to the solo player except for Culture, as you can't get three cities to Legendary, or Domination, since you won't have the land or population. However, if you enter on a Permanent Alliance, even those are available.

Our first leader is Huayna Cápac of the Incans. The Incans start with Agriculture and Mysticism.

Traits: Huayna is Industrial and Financial. Industrial fastens the productions of wonders, very useful for culture expansion and the important GPP. Financial is always useful and easy to use, but probably not as useful as in normal games, as there is less place to cottage spam.

The UB: The Terrace, a Granay with +2 :culture:. Not especially useful in OCC, in normal games it saves the monument or similar, in an OCC the two :culture: won't make that much a differenc.

The UU: The Quechua, a Warrior with +100% against Archery Units. Very mighty early rush unit, also useful against Barb Archers.

And the start:

Finally, a cut and paste of our standard doctrine:

There are no hard and fast rules here: fun and learning are our primary goals, but we do request that you update your progress at various points in the game, using the Spoiler feature of the boards.

Tentative posting updates are suggested at:

Here are the research milestones I think are interesting
1) Pyramids - which is as good a proxy as any for the end of the opening
2) Education
3) Biology
4) Rocketry

There are also some production milestones that could be announced
1) 100/200/500/1000 / turn
2) 25/50/100/150 / turn

What to write at these points? The date/turn number, of course, but I'd also like to see a "state of the state" report - research rate, hammer rate, gp production.

1200 AD or so (mid-game, Lib race, wars or peace, or whichever happened or didn't, etc)

End of game (Victory!!! or defeat, no shame in losing, especially if you tried a higher level. Learning is what we focus on, not fastest win or highest score)

Remember, these are only guidelines. What we really want are your thoughts as the game goes on, so if your strategies don't fall into line with those dates, feel free to adjust your reports accordingly.

We also welcome players to ask for specific game advice, as we have a number or stronger players who lurk and help out with solid tips, and of course, we help each other. Replies to specific questions should also be in spoilers, with a simple "@" in front of the person the answer is directed towards.

The WB-saves are attached (zipped; they are bigger than standard saves). To play, simply download and unzip it into your BTS/Saves/WorldBuilder folder. Start the game, and load your favorite MOD (if you use one, if not, check out the BUG MOD), select "Custom Scenario", and look for "OOC II [...]" (or Monarch, etc., for higher levels).

You can play with your favorite MOD at the Level and Speed of your choice. From Quick-Warlord to Marathon-Deity, all are welcome!
Spoiler what's up with specific difficulties :
In each scenario file you can select your level of difficulty, but that doesn't give the AI the right bonus techs by itself. Use the Noble save for all levels at and below Noble. The Monarch save gives all the AI Archery. Emperor adds Hunting; Immortal adds Agriculture; Deity adds The Wheel.

For players on Monarch or above, you should add archery as a tech for the barbarians (if you don't, the AI will capture their cities very early). This cannot be done in the WB save file and must be done in Worldbuilder as follows:
Spoiler how to add techs to the barbarians :

  1. Zoom in all the way so you can't see the rest of the map.
  2. Use the CTRL-W key (or the menu) to enter the worldbuilder. Avoid looking at the mini-map in the lower right corner.
  3. By default you're in "player" mode (look in the box in the upper right; the icon that looks like a person should be selected). You'll get a drop down menu labeled with your leader's name. Barbarians are at the bottom, so cover the rest of the list with your hand if you don't want to see who else is on the map. Select "Barbarians".
  4. Select the "Technologies" tab in the box on the left.
  5. Find Archery (the arrow head icon; 8th row, 3rd column from the right) and click it.
  6. Exit the worldbuilder.
  7. Zoom out again after the map fades, and start playing.
Spoiler huts and events :
Note: If you want tribal villages and random events, choose the saves with "Huts" in their names. If you want huts but no events, select the Huts saves and use Custom Scenario to turn on the option that suppresses events.

Ah, very interesting. I'll have a go at it at Prince-Normal tomorrow.
You spelled Huayna and Quechua wrong though ;)

...boy did I ever back the wrong horse here.

Spoiler :
"Oh, there seems to be a nice balance of power here between the Hindu bloc of Saladin, Caesar, Pacal, and Shaka and the non-Hindu bloc of Peter and Lincoln. I bet if I back the Hindu block and get into defensive pacts with all of them we'll be able to keep Peter in check HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA NOPE."

Yeah, I lost in the 1900's. Took a stab at a UN win but was five votes short. Then Peter forced Shaka to capitulate. If Peter hadn't founded Christianity and spread it all over the place this would've been a very different game. Argh.

Monarch difficulty. Epic speed. 1025 BC

Currency has just been researched. I've built the Great Wall and received a great spy for my troubles. I'm closing in on a second great person - 75% scientist, 25% spy). I'm the tech leader. I'm heading for Monarchy and then Civil Service. Time to start spamming cottages.

I'm not entirely certain how to continue. I always play with permanent alliances activated but forgot to add it to this game so culture is out. I'm not much of a warmonger so conquest doesn't seem likely (and I've no idea if it's feasible for a OCC). I think I might try for space race (again, I don't know if this is feasible).

Most of the world has gone Hindu but I haven't met everyone yet. Religion won't provide an easy distinction between allies and enemies.

2nd try. Raging Barbarians, Aggressive AI and Random Events on. I build 4 (four) warriors after my initial worker to do some minimal fogbusting and minimize pillaging. That worked better.

2160 BC - The Great Wall
2040 BC - Founded Judaism. It still wasn't taken, and the 25% production increase are nice and the +2 happiness with the +4 from gold/gems will allow me to skip drama/Global Theatre.
1720 BC - Stonehenge (I just like this wonder, and it's really cheap)
1400 BC - Oracle, took Metal Casting.
625 BC - Pyramids.

On my way to Buerocracy now, looks pretty good.

Immortal no huts. Nuked off the face of the earth in 1946, six turns before SS landing. To be fair, I launched with 1 engine and 3 thrusters, while my rival launched 2 turns later with 1 engine and 5 thrusters so I probably had lost regardless. Nuclear was definitely the more stylish way to go.

Spoiler :
I thought Peter favored HR rather than Bureaucracy for some reason. That makes him a pretty good neighbor for OCC, although he is a bit cutthroat for my tastes. The world split across 5 religions (!), so I instigated a war around the time I got Education. Unfortunately Peter got a vassal and started steamrolling across the continent. Rome picked up Pacal as a vassal which slowed down Peter's progress through the late Industrial and beyond, but I failed to get him fighting at the end of the game. He and his 3 vassals wisely nuked me back to size 5 before driving a modern armor into my empty city.

I did not verify this in-game, but I belive the tile 1E of the lake should be cleared for irrigation. Since it's only adjacent to a corner of a river, it will not provide +1C when a forest preserve is placed there.

Space Win in 1958 - Noble/NoHuts.

Spoiler :

SIP. Worker First. Leave the trees for preserves. With furs in the third ring, I decided to take a shot at Buddhism, which I landed, along with Mining Priesthood Writing. With Gold in the fat cross, at this difficulty taking the Civil Service sling is probably the right answer; I instead took the conservative route Oracle->CoL. Used the missionary to scout around for a bit, then fog bust, and eventually dropped him into Peter's capital.

At this point, with a Library and two Monasteries in the build queue, and a reluctance to chop trees, I ought to have picked up Bronze Working. Instead, I started on Math, doubling back when I realized my mistake. Alphabet was also a better choice - we want to be on friendly terms with the leader who is expanding into the space we aren't using.

Diplomatically, the world divided into four Hindu states and two Jewish ones. I never managed to catch either one, so eventually decided to punt the pacifism bonus and go to Free Religion.

Civil Service, then up the Aesthetics tree for all the goodies there, using the artist for golden age #1.

From there, up to Education; there's not a lot for the worker to do at this point, so he's been chopping trees on the russian border, which makes things easy. Also, I get rooked by a lack of fog busters, and a barb city spawns to the south west. Hooray for the extra worker, boo for losing a Mace at 99.5% odds.

Useful to remember that the piles of gold you end up with can upgrade an extra unit in that situation.

Biology, Nationalism (decided I wanted to buy a second golden age with hammers for the civics swaps), Astronomy

Didn't handle the diplo game very well. Peter was fine, but Saladin and Caesar were belligerent, one of them damn near captured my city (One rifle left at less than 2 strength) Eventually I figured out that Shaka really wants to be used as an attack dog; if you aren't bribing him with a tech every 15 turns or so, he starts to feel under appreciated.

Rifling, then on up to Super Conductors, before cutting over to Rocketry. I'm working on the right way to unfold the space ship in OCC, and failed at it pretty badly. The fundamental problem is this - after you complete Rocketry, you've got 20400 raw hammers of projects to assemble; so you want to chew through those as quickly as possible, while at the same time making sure to research quickly enough that you don't run out of things to do.

So what's the right research order? What's the right balance of science and hammers? How do you best use the Great Engineer you get at Fusion? I mangled this all pretty badly, and consequently my ship was way way late.

Milestones

Pyramids: 1160BC, running at about 17 :research:, 14 base :hammers:

Education: 780AD, 244 :research: 16 :hammers: - that's the long dark teamtime of the soul, where the capital has been building research and hammer banking a bunch of wood for Universities

Biology: 1200AD, Liberalism -> Biology. I like pre-researching both Sci Method and Liberalism, then finishing them on successive turns. My research rate fell from 513 to 400 when SM made everything obsolete.

First Blood: 1525AD, Lincoln get the shiv from his own religious block.

Rocketry: 1802. When I finally get the last bits settled, my research rate is around 1100 and my base hammers are about 80. But my production modifiers are the pits - National Park + Ironless Works + Coal Plant is overpowered, and I never noticed because I was concentrating on screwing up my research order. Poor planning.

noble no huts space race 1918

Spoiler :

1600BC Pyramids
1040 Oracle - Bureaucracy
625 Hanging Gardens, 200 Great Lib. (probably not worth going for these if you get Biology in timely fashion. See below).
150 AD Education
1220 Biology (from lib) Why so late? More used to Immortal and stupidly went Economics first (probably not a good idea even there).
1725 Rocketry (after Enviro, Lab, Factory, not sure if optimal)

Stayed friendly with Peter (despite wrong religion for quite a while) by gifting heaps of techs and joining wars. Also bribed Peter to attack Lincoln to get me a tradable source of iron for IW.
Didn't cut down any flat forests in BFC. Irrigated one incense for corn. Kept coal windmilled.

Immortal, 1510AD after Medicine

Spoiler :

Oracle to COL, spread Confu to Peter right away to convert him. kinda funny to keep the forrest for a Fin leader for the extra specialists, but the combo of Enviromentalism powered forrest reserve + free representation powered scientists rocks!

Got a nice assortment of wonders + very healthy econ. found a quick war with Shaka so far and gained a GG for Mil Adademy.

I have almost no experience with OCCs, but it's something I've been meaning to try again. I think I'm going to give this one a shot.

I'm not sure what difficulty to attempt this on though. The last time i played an OCC it was on either Noble or Prince and it was far too easy. Any suggestions?

I always love a good OCC. Emperor, no huts, no events.. It is 1903 AD and I am about to lose as Peter has launched last turn.. Think I need another 20 turns to complete mine..

SIP, forests to the north are too good to miss for forests preserves

Checkpoints & some details:
Spoiler :

* Oracled CS 1440 BC, guess I got a bit lucky there
* Pyramids 825 BC
* Education in 300 AD, Oxford was build in 680 AD
* Took Biology thru Lib in 1100 AD, Medicine 1250 AD
* Superconductors via Refregiration, Rocketry was dicovered in 1715 AD, build Apollo in 1780 AD

Wonders:
Oracle
Pyramids
Parthenon
Great Library
Broadway
Mining Inc

I made some bad mistakes which have might cost me the game..
* building Parthenon and thus poluting GPP pool. I got 3 GA and 2 GP, before 50 AD I got 2 GA and 1 GP. This really cost me some valuable beakers in the mid-game.. :(
* near the end of the game I was getting too comfortable and did not keep track of my opponents as I got Peter and Saladin to friendly. Shaka attacked in 1808 AD forcing me to bribe Peter with valuable space race techs the same turn. Though it did save my back as Shaka decided to move his stack to Peter's crappy city (which was nearer) instead of my capital defended by a Quechua and an Axeman
* in the late game I traded very generously for techs like AL, Ind, Flight with Peter who was already becoming very strong with serveral vassals.

It was a fun map and I might try it again..
