I didn't see anything interesting to shadow or play along to tonight (except the mad scientist game, so I may give that one a run too), and since the wife is out of town for a week, I have to get my civ on somehow. Haven't done an OCC in awhile, so I decided to drop down to monarch to generate one, and this is what I drew - thought it was kind of an interesting start after I settled - maybe a bit overpowered for a PHI leader with the food and all important marble nearby, but figured I'd post it if anyone wanted to shadow.

EDIT: After playing awhile, this got a lot tougher, because:

    Spoiler :
I'm isolated, and have no easy access to copper or horse - good thing I built great wall. Someone built mids in 1270 BC - not used to seeing that from the AI!

Cool I haven't done a OCC in awhile, this might be fun.

Besides I don't want to get too involved in a game, and OCC goes quickly.

Zoomed through this all the way to 1900s - have a shot despite the slow start:

    Spoiler :
This game was awful for a long time - thankfully, can catch up on monarch. Tech pace for the AI was insane - must have been a lovefest. Plus, there are some strong techers in this game (Vicky & Zara). Mids went on turn 69 on monarch/normal! Great library in the BCs, and lib in 700 AD! Shocking on monarch.

Meanwhile, I didn't clear 100 beakers a turn until after 1000 AD. First meeting looked like this:

Every subsequent meeting was similar. So pretty much had to research things the AI doesn't prioritize and backfill like mad. biology was a huge tech from that standpoint, as was artillery and constitution - constitution netted me like 6 techs from Brennus. Here's the situation in 1900:

2 other civs have completed apollo, I'm about to, and just fought off a war against Charlie with 6 machine guns.

Have a shot, but this'll be close. I don't think I do as well with the PHI trait on these as I do with IND - for some reason I'm much worse when it comes to trying to focus on specialists.

Played until about 80 turns left - once I knew it was over - a loss. Was close though.

    Spoiler :
I was such an idiot in this game - I forgot to adopt a religion, and for about 100 turns, was in pacifism without adopting a stupid religion. How dumb. Anyway, Vicky got big by the end of this - here's how close she's getting with 3 vassals. Kublai is big too, so I sure hope she and him don't fight.

I show this because I've now defied this 5 times:

Thank goodness it's an OCC - I also defied universal suffrage about 5 times. This sure helped the tech rate:

That got me 7 techs, and all of a sudden, the tech lead! I needed to beeline this sooner - this ultimately was what cost me in the end - if I had gone straight for this right after rocketry, it would have made the difference.

This helped, as I was in the last 100 turns and i got close, but I'm clearly not used to doing space races, and I paid for it. It was really a race between me & Vicky, and she launched a ship as I finished my third casing. 100% chance for her ship to make it, and no chance for me and my 15 machine guns to take her capital. Ugh - I just don't manage the PHI trait well - one of my biggest shortcomings in civ. Fun game though - here was my city at the end with loads of settled great people:

    AP win in 1808 AD

    Spoiler :
I missed the pyramids, went cottages, and teched Divine Right since it was the only religion not founded. I got a ton of prophets from earlier wonders and was able to OR + hammers the AP out pretty fast. I used OR with no state religion after meeting everyone, to get brennus to like me. KK liked bureaucracy, those guys + myself were enough to win, everyone else just had missionaries gifted last second

    UN win in 1990-something

    Spoiler :

Saw it was isolation relatively quickly and went wonder spamming. Pyramids, Lighthouse, Parth, Glib, UoS, and some others. Beelined optics and took Astronomy from Lib for the trade routes but more so for the observatory. The main continent had 4 different religions active however so they were constantly at war and backwards. KK was actually my tech rival on first meeting everyone.

At one point Zara made 6 random demands in a 30 turn segment so I killed him out of spite. Victoria and her vassal Charlie then were bribed into war so I brought in KK just long enough to distract them. Mehmed expanded into the empty areas pretty quickly. Build the UN and went against Mehmed. KK and Brennus love me and with the other civs mostly destroyed the game finally ended.

Start was really weak. Not so much for the isolated part but more so for the abundance of unimproved water tiles. Probably would have lost this at emperor even. Last picture I took of the city. Taken at the beginning of the war with Zara.

    Space Race in 1951;
    Spoiler :
sure I could have done better without all the sloppy play. Popping iron working from the hut just south-west of Washington sure helped, as did the silver-tin tile just one south :p

Man - just goes to show I'm terrible with the PHI trait - everyone else is winning this game, but I couldn't. OCC with IND on monarch, I seem to win comfortably. For some reason I struggle with PHI.

Although, I must say, the brilliant strategy of going 100 turns in pacifism with no state religion was probably the big mistake - difference between winning and losing, since I was pretty close at the end. I might have to run with another one tonight again, since I've got the house to myself.

    I guess I suck too, michmbk...diplo loss 1952. Bleh.

Oh, wait...I don't suck...every aspect of the diplomacy implementation in this game is broken and I just don't take advantage of it. Maybe I'll become a warmonger and mindlessly beat everyone down, domino capitulate them, and win!...seems like CivIV was designed for that purpose. :wallbash: Sorry for the tirade but most of my defeats end in that scenario because I don't REX spam and warmonger, so I'm growing a little bitter about the vassal system.

But specifically in this game, I had the only nuclear arsenal on the planet early...probably 60-80 turns ahead of everyone else. No one else had any nukes or capability to build them the entire game. I can nuke someone to half their population and destroy about 70% of their improved land...yet I have no diplo leverage because my 'power rating' is lower than theirs ? And that same civ can recover from my nuclear devastation quickly...having both the power and tech speed to capitulate 2 other civs and destroy a third. Uh, ya...that's BS. Any civilization devasted by nuclear weapons would be incapable of anything for decades and beg for peace.

On a side note, I'm impressed with JujuLautre's space date. That was my VC attempt and I couldn't even come close to that date. I'm curious if he/she just utilized philo & specialists better than I did, or maybe had better diplo skills to tech trade faster.

When playing Phi and not IND in occ, I usually only try for the mids and the great lib for early wonders, and get two scientists from a library asap; well, because we had marble here I also got the oracle (for aesthetics) and the temple of artemis, but that's another story :p

ah, well...I try not to offend any women by assuming 'he'.

I did the mids and GL, and library asap for 2 scientists. Got Oracle for CS sling and liberalism for SciMeth...Ethiopia was too close to chance going for liberalism->physics. Did not go with ToA or biology early though. You must have kept good relations and better trading techs than me. Everyone was annoyed with each other in my game due to different relgions...so I couldn't trade techs without offending at least 1 other civ...usually 2.

Was the case in my game also. At the end, 4 civs out of 6 were using the religion they had founded as a state religion

Whatever, just take sides; piss off a leader or two is not a problem if she is weak and/or you have friends to back you up and/or they hate other people more than you. In my case, kublai was alone in free religion for a long time, and no one hated Zara; after, it was a choice between england/hre or turks/celts, and since Brennus was more a pain in the ass than anything else if I had him as an ally... well, I chose the other side; but in the end, did no trade much with Victoria, since she was my main contender :p

Never was any real competition for liberalism btw; took medicine with it

Sheesh. I took Astro and that was tight. Suppose I was saving forests for Nat Park so perhaps I was just going slower than others though.

Those are some loaded dice though, once you know the mechanics.
