High school education only? A poor prospect. But there are a wide variety of technical degrees taught at community colleges for fractions of the cost of 4 year degrees that yield non-trivial employment prospects.

Perhaps my idea is too restrictive on "personal freedom", and there's probably some innovative way of getting around that. Should we give people the freedom to pursue an education that will leave them in debt with little gain in terms of job prospects?

Maybe the core issue is how liberal we are with issuing loans. A person choosing to pursue liberal arts studies should not be handed a loan if that degree does not lead to an increase in their earning potential. Just like a person who wants to take a pleasant vacation for 4 years and visit the world, gaining no additional income-earning value from the experience, should not be given a loan to do so when they can't afford it. If they've got the money themselves, great. If not, well... that's the question.

Is an educated populace a thing of value aside from raw economic earning potential? Do we worship that hard at the altar of money?

It is of as much value as are vacations. To be done responsibly taking into account the need for productivity and progress. People can't just take endless vacations, we all have a duty to serve as a functioning part of society.

So yes, such majors should be allowed within reason. Perhaps "within reason" means "not 4-year vacation with a loan to cover living expenses in the meantime". Not that it is perfectly analogous to vacation, of course.

Usually when people say "we must encourage education in the sciences as opposed to the arts" they do not mean "we must impose absolute hard limits on the maximum number of engineering students permitted."

True. In some places they are trying to match community college programs with needs of businesses. Then they also hold job fairs to try to give everyone a shot at a job.

A fraction of the cost of a 4 year degree =/= costs nothing.

And in addition to all the other problems with Defiant's plan, how exactly do you know the number of any job you'll need? That can change pretty rapidly from year to year, even month to month.

New Zealand tends to report the jobs that have shortages and provides preference to immigration applicants who can fill those slots. Determining the actual number needed is probably far more difficult since you have no prior statistic to work off of in regards to how many people are working in it and how many people are needed to keep up with the demands of that particular industry.

Student Loans Collections should always be in demand. Just require coursework on the subject with every liberal arts degree plan.

I would rather work developing donation websites for non-profits that help instead of hurt the masses of people crippled by debt.

By aggressively collecting against them, you are removing the crippling debt, thus helping them.

Robbing people's bank accounts and skimming their wages by court order isn't helping.

What? You think we actually needed any of that money? No, not at all, you can take it to pay that student loan debt. It's not like we need to eat or anything...

I think if you think about it for a little bit, you'll come to find that society doesn't "need" anything. People should be encouraged to educate themselves in whatever subject matters they want, at whatever pace they like, and under no financial pressures. Our monetary system is unnecessarily creating unhappiness and we need to address that, not try to make our education system even more intertwined with our monetary system.

Who would have thought you have to pay back a loan? I'm blown away - I thought that money was free and that the Santa Clause ringing the bell around the tin cup was paying for it.

It already is. It is called socialized capitalism. It does not work and no one cares to even talk about it. One racks up a lot of debt in education, takes a gamble on the free market, and then thrown at the mercy of the governmental welfare system. Or lives as a slave to their debt most of the rest of their lives.

Don't go to college, and read whatever you like about whatever you like on your own time. Problem solved.

Unfortunately our society isn't built to accept that as legitimate knowledge. You need that fancy piece of paper.

Taking college loans is a choice, it is up to you. If you borrow it you need to pay it back.

There are many ways to minimize or avoid excessive debt:
1.) Go to a community college for two years and transfer credits.
2.) Go to a state university instead of an overpriced private school.
3.) Join the military and get aid from GI bill
4.) Learn a trade at a technical college
5.) While in college get a useful degree like engineering instead of competitive lesbian studies of popular culture.

College costs a lot because it is subsidized by the government. Easy access to large student loans allows colleges to overcharge. If you want more of something subsidize it, if you want less of something you tax it.

The younger generation needs to cowboy up and start acting like adults. An adult pays his own way, he doesn't look to shirk his responsibilities or whine about it. Life is choice, make good ones and life is better, make bad ones and life suffers.

Just wait until you also have to pay for health insurance that you don't need to subsidize the cost of people who need it. Paying debt for things you did not even benefit from is going to be the economic reality of every young American, seventeen trillion and counting.
