I find "rough seas" to be tedious other than on tiny maps. I want a system where you enter the deep ocean and "plot a course" in a given direction by dragging an arrow. Then your unit disappears until you receive notice it's lost at sea, or it appears somewhere in a coastal tile, revealing the sea tiles in between, maybe with some damage.

I'd like shipbuilding to unlock much earlier, where cogs have zero ability to navigate oceans past 3 tiles off coastal tiles, and do take rough seas damage. So no distant land exploration with cogs, unless there's lucky archipelagos, but continental maps should have long stretches of deep ocean.

Astronomy and Cartograph should swap with Feudalism and Guilds, Cartography should swap with shipbuilding and be renamed Navigation. Wharf should unlock in Shipbuilding. After shipbuilding, you can "aim" to cross the ocean, but can lose your ship and you'll end up far off course every time. Cartography should be renamed Navigation and now you can plot a course and "aim" to end up across the ocean and end up in the right place, never dying if at full health, and taking less random damage. Very limited damage in the 3 tile off coastal limit. Only in modern can ships occupy deep ocean normally.
