odd game crash

Game installed fine, patches fine.

I startup the game love the graphics, set to play a single player choose my options, get into game, look around with my warrior, head to home fortify him, make 2 more warriors to explore with somebody discovers buddism and "poof" I have been defeated.

any ideas?

is this a crash or do you just get the message you have been defeated...

I am defeated message, not a real crash that's why I added the "odd"

I'm simply defeated, with nothing around to defeat me.

ok - now there are two possibilities:
1) you are defeated after 10 turns no matter what you do (the game starts with "10 turns left" displayed) this would mean your game discs are not recognized as genuine copies
or
2) you forgot to settle a city and roam with your starting settler - if that is the case the game will start looking for victory conditions including conquest after 15 turns and if a player does not have at least one city by then it declares him defeated, so settle a city and start your civilization already
