Have you ever encountered things in a Cive 4 game that just doesn't make any sence? Well if you have than this is the place to talk about it. I'll start things off.

In a BTS game I was playing my primary objective was to wipe a back stabbing, water poisoning, war mongering Asoka and keep the continent all to myself. The problem was the leader I chose for the scenario, (George Washington) wasn't the best choice because of the rapid expansion required to seal off half of the continent from Asoka early game to keep him contained. After several tries starting over from a save of the start of the game Asoka always flooded my cities with spys, or when I made it too dificult to do that poor everything he had right into the weakest part of my defensive line (which consisted mostly of units garrisoned in forts built on forested hilltops) until he could puch through. Despite all this my civilization and Asokas always ranked as two of the most advanced civilizations in the world.

I got tired of this happening so many times and just wiped Asoka out early game in order to free resources up for expansion and technological development. Unfortunately somehow no matter how I did it, every time I wiped Asoka out, my civilization turned out to be at best middle of the pack tech wise versus near top when I let him live and faced eminent war. Best I can figure out either the "Cold War" build up caused more rapid technological development, or when I wiped out Asoka and the generic Indian civilization has been wiped out message appears, the computer puts much greater development on technological development. Either way, this is one tough scenario.

Anyways what is so odd about this is because when Asoka was left alive I often had to decrease research funding in order to support the required military build up to defend myself and being one of the most advanced civs vs. keeping near full research and placing cities on currency and research when I killed him and being middle of the pack. What gives? Also, dealing with a genocidal Asoka is pretty intresting as well. Even when he was cautious or even pleased and bribed he still tried to wipe me out.

If anyone wants to try it out for themselves just let me know in a PM and I could find a way to send you the game start save file. If you do, ask me to send it to you be prepared for hours of frustration and conflict.

Just in case you are intrested, here is a description of the game.
World: Huge
Difficulty: Noble
Country: United States
Leader: George Washington
Primary Rival Civilization: Indian Empire
Rival Leader: Genocidal Asoka (I'm not joking on this, he'll want you dead no matter what.)
Starting Continent Size: Large
Inhabitants: American and Indian Empires
Island Chain conections: none
Total number of civs: 10

additional notes: The Barbarians seem to have a tendancy to build up big cities on this map for some reason. I have often encountered barbarian cities with populations over 10 that are complete with aquaducts, libraries, and everything you would expect from a standard city controlled by one of the civilizations. Also, expect barbarian hords to fill the continent midway into the early part of the game, building of the Great Wall is strongly recomended.
