Discuss unit-naming themes and protocols in this thread. Check the War Room for an up-to-date list of unit names.

Can I suggest Willem Barentsz, Cornelis Houtman and Henry Hudson as names for our exploring warriors.

    :D

We need to determine how our units are going to be named, and how we'll distinguish each unit type from each other.

Creativity isn't my area of expertise, so I'm looking for a Designation Officer to fulfil this task. Ideally, I'd personally like each unit type to have part of the name to describe the unit type (as in, warriors, archers, chariots, rather than melee, ranged, mounted) as well as having a unique themer for each unit type.
This had better not be contradicting the TaoSAN as well, or there'll be blood! Blood I tell ya!

EDIT: I'm fine with those names for now.

Well, these 3 are Dutch explorers, since exploring is the main function of the warriors.

I would rather be able to keep the same theme for all warriors, rather than distinguishing between exploring warriors, military police warriors, etc.
For the record, I would support naming all warriors after Dutch explorers.

Well, I was going to wait and see how much support there was for naming them as outlined.

I like Dutch Explorers as a theme for warriors. My only concern is with abbreviations that are easy for poor spellers like me ;)
Perhaps we can go with the names Dutchfire suggested, but also attach a "shorthand" designation to each one that will make them easier to remember and refer to?

    WillB, Corne, and Hudson?

Last names is probably just as easy, so Barentsz, Houtman and Hudson. (If I got a buck for every Willem or Cornelis in Dutch history, I'd be driving a Ferrari)

I was thinking Barentsz, Houtman and Hudson, and i'll probably mispell Barentz Barents a lot ;)

    I like the names!!

Bear in mind that Hudson was English. He was hired by the Dutch East India company, so he was working for the Dutch... but he was born in London.

I like the idea of naming exploring units after accomplished explorers throughout history. If there aren't enough of Dutch examples to satisfy our needs (i.e. more exploring units than dutch explorers) then we can look elsewhere for inspiration.

At any rate, we will have naval exploring units as well -- what were some of the Dutch ship's names? Also, would we want to designate them in any way? I.e. US ships are U.S.S., British ships are H.M.S., etc.

    That is all.

    Not going to happen :p

Hr. Ms. when there's a queen, Zr. Ms. when there's a king.
Dutch Wiki has lists of current Dutch Navy ships. They are mainly named after Dutch captains or Dutch cities/provinces. I suggest taking the cities/provinces, since the captains might interfere with our explorers.

I also like Dutch explorers. I think that makes 6 in favor. About time to slap some names on those dudes I figure.
