I was watching CNN today then I see the announcer say something about "speaking with black America". Ok... so there are still two Americas, I thought that Martin Luther Kind Jr. wanted to get rid of two Americas. So I am not part of regular America, I get to be part of (insert race here) America?
Does that mean that my friends are in Chinese America? Why do you always have to mention someone's race when you mention a successful black person? It pisses me off when my teacher introduces a writer like "This poem was made by Langston Hughes, a black poet." Does his race really matter? So if I hear one of Pete Seeger's civil rights songs do I need to know his race, or does he need to be introduced as white before I get any wrong opinions?

We don't need a Chinese America because Chinese people work hard and have succeeded in society. We don't qualify for affirmative action because our SAT scores kick ass. Chew on that for a while.

That wasn't the point. But thanks for the complement considering that I beat the average SAT score for the uber-smart asian person. Must you interject yourselves into every single one of these discussions?

Yes. people do what you describe( "A successful Black [Whatever]") out of condescension. And sometimes it gets to be so bad that the guilty party doesn't even notice it anymore. As if a civilized let alone successful black person is a novel thing to them.

I think some people would really prefer that we all had our own different countries.

Although Dr. King wanted to get rid of the black/white divide, it never has come into practice if you think about it. Black and White America are simply codewords out of the fifties and sixties to describe two incongruous and often conflicting elements of American society, which is something that cannot really be said for Chinese American culture and mainstream 'white' American culture. The reason the words are still in use today is because the codewords still have use in certain pockets in the country (i.e; Chicago)

I have always felt that the constant reminder that someone famous is Black is probably more of a way of tricking people of said race to be involved in education. But more often, it just makes stupid kids proud.

Hyphenated Americans built this nation! And we must keep hyphenating Americans into smaller and smaller groups until we hyphenate our names with American. We do not need two Americas. No. We need more. Competition is the key. The more hyphenated groups struggling for top position to become an un-hyphenated group (the standard) will help our nation grow.

The market will decide who deserves to be the standard. I am an Anglo-American.

So America can take down its colorblind position in the world.

Because many people would rather have them as a role model than some rapper or superstar athlete? It aint outta surprise, its about giving young blacks realistic (and good) role models...

Not necessarily. The unique American situation isn't about color; it's about incongruous and supposedly conflicting cultures. If it wasn't the case, then Obama clearly wouldn't be having the support he has now.

Yeah, in retrosepct although America isn't perfect. They have come really close in minority relations. Well according to the College of Dupage. Europe still outranks America but that's because they have the ability to kick out all the immigrants whenever they wish.
They rank it as so.

Genocide
Forced assimilation
Slavery
Segregation
Integration.

I sort of don't get it but at least the U.S. isn't trying to depopulate its minorities.

So you believe Obama is being heavily supported because he is black and a part of an outside culture? Is this the same reason that Hillary has support? To what extent do you believe Obama is being supported because he is a part of the black culture?

Do you believe this statement has the potential to discredit black and female voters who do not disassociate themselves with Obama or Hillary? Or do you feel that black voters supporting Obama are making a sound cultural decision when voting for a highly educated member of their cultural class? I suppose, this idea applies to the white vote, and the culture that surrounds the white vote? Or does the so-called "black" vote not factor into your position because you feel he is being support by all voting races and classes because he is of the black (non-mainstream) culture?

Of course, I have read too much into your sentence? Did I not understand you? I apologize if I have misconstrued anything. Forgive me.

What I'm trying to say is that Obama wouldn't be getting the support he is getting if he painfully and sterotypically culturally Black. The association with Wright merely killed him as is, imagine how his election would be going if he were exactly like Jesse Jackson? Obama has a unique situation going for him since he isn't a full member of either conflcting side.

I did chew on it and I'm already hungry again.;)

Remember blacks are separate but equal. With the constant reminder that the blacks aren't as good as everyone else by the "Rev" Sharpton and James and the racist AA structure along with other black only groups like the NAACP blacks will always remain separate.

There are economic and political reasons to keep blacks out there. Unwitting pawns. Could you imagine what would happen if blacks were bombarded with messages that they were just as good as everyone else. Bombarded with messages that they can do it with out hand outs. What would the race baiters do?

I can understand that position. I, however, do not feel that the Wright Scandal killed Obama, but it was easy to see its detriment to his campaign.

Obama ability to reach out to white voters is impressive. I, honestly, believed he would have more trouble. The young voters came to the rescue -- I suppose. I was surprised by the response of white America; I underestimated their ability to connect with any person from the so-called Black America.

Unwitting pawns? We also need white people to start wars for us, you know keep the population down. :joke:

Don't use inflammatory language, we don't need this to get closed do we?

The welfare mom is waaay to overplayed, I see more white people than black people in my school on government aid so playing that card isn't 100% accurate. Of course there would be race baiters, the old guard still hasn't left yet. I'm only afraid of what happens when the post-70s people come to the forfront.

Typo? I think you mean "With the constant...". Otherwise I don't follow.

People will stop talking about "black America" and blacks as separate from "normal America" when blacks stop demanding their own set of rules.

To me, at least, it seems rather ludicrous to be outraged that someone might insinuate that you aren't part of "normal America" when you simultaneously demand being treated differently from whites. Either blacks really are being kept down and need a hand up from the nice white folks with lots of guilt (In which case this statement is nothing but the truth) or they don't, in which case we need to get rid of some serious double standards we've got in our society.

But that'll never happen. People are people. They like having their cake, and eating it too, and skin color is doesn't affect that in the slightest.

What different sets of rules?

Racism isn't based soley off the color off someone's skin. Modern racism is a combination of cultural hatred and skin color. Not only one.

But those white people don't get hand outs just for being white. They don't have their "white leaders" telling them they are owed welfare by the man.
