Old problem with new patch

I see many players have/had the following problem, but none of their solutions work for me. When trying to apply patch3.13 to BTS (or 2.13 to Warlords for that matter) I get:

"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 - Beyond the Sword is installed. The update requires that a previous version of the application be installed"

This despite my having installed Civ4 Complete edition (on DVD). Is there a patch specifically for Civ 4 Complete?

I tried re-installing - but no joy. Any ideas PLEASE?

After some looking it seems MANY players have this problem - with no solution in sight. I've even seen some administrators saying they'll "look into it" never to reply again. BTW, Firaxis's Railroads! apparently gives the same problem - a solution would help many players get going...

Are there multiple versions of the BTS3.13 patch for a boxed game (maybe US vs. Europe version)? Using the in-game updater just says that no updates are available.


The expression "Stuck in freezing molasses" comes to mind...
