Omens Bug and Question

Bug: There appears to be a bug in Omens... the message list said that the Divinity Civilization declared war on Shingas, but attacked me (Geo. Washington).

Question: How are religion levels calculated... there were more cities with Protestantism than Catholicism, but Shingas and France were both officially Catholic. How do the horsemen calculate whether or not to attack you? And how can you tell when they will stop?

I don't understand that scenario either. I don't know how to stop the horseman. He razed my capital and the holy city miraculously moved to a Shinga city. Later everyone converted to Catholicism, and the horsemen kept razing random (?) cities. Even later divinity made peace with Shingas, but not me. Then it said 100 turns left and I abandoned the game.
