On being Dave Bliss...

I talked today with an old friend whom aI had not seen in a while, Dave Bliss. He is a warehouse worker in Waco, TX, which is the rub. There is another Dave Bliss in Waco, the former men's basketball coach. If you are unfamiliar with the story, I'll outline it in a moment.

Suffice to say that my friend is getting phone calls from TV stations and newspapers all over the country. One, from Florida, was an outright stoner, who was shocked that there could be more than one "Dave Bliss"'s in the world. As it happens I know two: the other is a primary school principal, also in Waco.

How would you reacti if suddenly your name was famous, or infamous as in this case? Would you enjoy the attention, or would you rather the world go away?

It's funny, but everytime I see the news and some ****** with my name is suspected of being a chester, or racist, or raper, I get PO'ed. PO'ed BIG TIME.

And it only has to be either, the same first of last name, not my full name.

A brief summary of the unpleasnt summer of Dave Bliss.

Dave was the head basketball coach at Baylor University, which is big time college basketball. In June one of his players, Patrick Dennehy went missing. The story made national news, and this forum, when his car turned up over a thousand miles away. In due course his dead body was found, with its head cut off, and his roomaate from the team was indicted for murder. As of now, they are still fighting extradiction in court.

After the national attention died down there was a parade of bad news which seeped out. Recruiting irregularities, led to closeer scrutiny of the program, which led to the school imposing a probation on itself. Bliss resigned in disgrace. The Athletic director resigned.

Then it got interesting. Bliss tried to get some of his players and assistants to say that Dennehy was involved in drugs, and that is what led to the murder. One of them recorded him. What had been a stepping down, has become a running from the wolves. At the next Board meeting, the University President is facing a formal no confidence vote.

Suffice to say that the name Dave Bliss is not well respected in Waco right now. This is ironic since he had a squeaky clean reputation coming in. I'm glad I dont do hiring.

Yeah, it would suck.

I've had two experiences with people having the same name as me. One was when I was a kid. We were at the same dentist at the same time. I sure hope that wasn't confusing. My mom said it happened, I don't remember.

The other experience was when I left my day planner at the Uni. They called the wrong guy. Fortunately, I was able to get it back before they gave it to the wrong person.

I guess it wouldn't be too great. However, I've already been asked about people with the same name as I have, whether I'm related (because I'm certainly not the person they're referring to, he's been dead for almost 170 years). I found out after a couple of questions that I was related to that person, but I never made a big deal out of it.....nor was much of a deal made of it here, since not many people know the name in this area.
