On patches

I like patches. They make the game more interesting. However:

I feel, they make my previous saves hard to play. There has got to be a way to play prepatch saves as a prepatch game. The removal of the third trade route completely changed the strategic situation in my previous saves. It seems like this new patch will do the same.
The hall of fame should reflect what patch the save was played on. It isn't fair to compare one civilization with another played with different rules.

The most common work around if you don't want an upcoming new patch to affect an existing game is to switch Steam to offline mode (BEFORE release of the patch) and don't go back online until either you're ready for the new patch.
