    Hey,

i've been lately trying unsuccessfully to win a one-city challenge on Emperor difficulty.
I do not want to go down to Monarch since i won the last 5 games on this level.

I play large/fractal maps with Bismark; cultural victory is disabled.

I must have tried around 10 games now on Emperor, the last 5 games i even used world-builder to give myself a super-capital. To no success.

Mostly i lose to an AI winning domination in late game (9/10 games).
I've tried gifting techs to always keep the two largest AIs in power-balance. But one always gets the upper hand and wins domination.
If i do manage to stop domination (mostly by helping out actively in wars), i lose out on space-race since i have to build military instead of ship-parts.

Any advice on how to manage the AIs?

    Destroy them. Win by conquest.

If you lose mostly by domination, try this:
    a) enable culture victory. Some civs will choose this victory condition thus they stop conquest.
    b) it means other civs are not balanced - make your own choice. Typically you don't want too few of them even if domination limit is higher. More civs = bigger chance there would be a counter (religious) block, that will be natural resistance to 1 civ's wars. Try to keep ratio 1 classic warmonger : 3 other civs. When more civs, there is also better chance that they will outtech warmongers early, stopping their conquests.

Nowodays there is a game OCC chalenge on HOF, but more standard settings there: standard size: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=504337

    Thanks for the tips.

The problem with cultural victory enabled:
If my capital starts inland, i cannot reach every AI. Thus i cannot actively counter an AI closing in on cultural victory. But i'll give it a go, perhaps you are right that some civs "need" this option.

And thank you for that link! Will read an surely find ways to improve my game!

It will be harder and harder as difficulty goes up. How many opponents and what map size You have?
Practically its impossible to win OCC from some point forward UNLESS You are willing to go for permanent alliances.

I have won OCC on deity, by having very good city, oracling CoL, spreading religion to everyone, kissing ass to everyone, avoided insulting Zara Yacob on every way possible. Forming permanent alliance with him, helping him strategically to domination win. i would still had lost, because Justician had build a mega army, but thanks to good relations I managed to bring Portugese to war as well as my ally. This was huge marathon map btw.

However, why I wrote this. Even with one single SUPER-SUPER-SUPER city, You will stay behind of Ai from some point of game. On deity map, I could barely keep pace in tech race until permanent alliances, but I had 4 grassland gems + I held holy city of dominating religion + I had luckyli Zara Yagob in game (hes base positive attitute to human)

When level goes up, You just cant build enough troops from one city to win by conquer. By having just one city You are extremely vulnerable to espionage acts and nuclear wars. Im afraid Monarch is about the maximum, what You can do with OCC. Asskissing only from there on...

    I play large/epic/fractal with 8 AIs.

Diplomacy isn't really the problem. I never had a problem with neighbors and DoWs and i never lost due to being killed off.

Perhaps i could try bribing AIs in/out of war better...which at some point does not work anymore since they "want to win the game". That's why i tried balancing AIs by gifting techs.

Since i play Bismark i always managed to Oracle CoL or MC (tried CS several times but always failed and reloaded).
Then i beeline Lib and after that Computers (with slight detours depending on how fast AI is teching).

I might try permanent alliances...have never played with this option before. Curious how this works :)

It's completely possible to win spacerace on OCC emperor.

Otherwise for conquest Justinian and cataphracts are the way to go. You need two stacks of 10 cataphracts and they are unstoppable. Though large and emperor is probably not doable. Small quick noble with 6 civs I've done without problems (OCC conquest).

IMO victory with permanent alliance is lame. It's like when Montenegro won the world war one or when Palau joined coalition of the willing.

For space people online usually pick Elizabeth of Netherlands (dyke is like moai). Gandhi, Ottomans and Russia are also good, Germany or Japan are not bad either.

Do you build national park? Recently I started playing OCC by going writing -> drama and skipping bronze working (only mining, fishing, agriculture and perhaps animal husbandry, so workers can improve tiles). Another thing is philo + parthenon + national epic + mausoleum of maussollos. Use early artist to farm 2-3 scientists, build taj mahal and trigger 2-3 golden ages during spaceship production.

Well You should try it on deity, huge map, with 17 AIs, agressive Ai turned on. Then come and tell how lame it is. You must understand fact, that You need to survive most of the game by yourself, all this time keeping in mind whos gonna be Your ally, helping him in every possible way trought all eras (You wont be able to be Friendly with too many civs and if You ally fails in long term, Your game is over). You can only use his troops and cities in very late game, when Your one city is just a strong for to move balance in war, that has armies multiple times bigger than Your city can possibly afford.

Playing noble, You can do anything You like. You can put all 17 AIs in team against You, then turn on ALWAYS war, and still win it. Just found city, start building warriors, You raze first 4-5 enemies with just warriors...

So please dont tell me, any victory is lame. Civ IV is one of the most adaptive games in world. To find Your flow feeling, pick level that challanges You the most, when still leaving reasonable chance to win and win as You can. Every winning style needs a different approach.

Please post save, where You are even close to win space race in OCC on emperor.
Being close, but losing I consider as success.

I build national park against pollution only, i never keep forests.
At the beginning I cottage and once i reach Computers i go mills+state property.

Perhaps i'll try another game tonight :)

Let's try a save where we all start from together. Though with large map you can't survive a war on emperor.

After Ironworks and Steam (because in SpaceRace you probably skip HeroicEpic) + defensive pact with a neighbour you are able to survive any war except nuclear one

    I have generated game:

Small, emperor, epic, 6 civs, all victories enabled, OCC, no vassals, no random events, no goodie huts.

Let's see if we can win the space race

Lost to Victoria's Cultural in 1933 with only stasis chamber left to launch. If I played a bit more optimal I could have done it.

I launched in 1898, and the ship arrived in 1928.

    Spoiler :
I started researching AG - masonry -bronzeworking - myst - poly - mono - priesthood.
I built worker - warrior - pyramids until size 4, worker - some more pyramids -orace - finish pyramids.

I was lucky to grab judaism, so I could use organized religion very early (2500 BC).
All the neighbours wen judaism as well.

oracle 2025 BC (code of laws, should probably have tried for civil service.)
    pyramids 1525 BC.
    great library 725 BC
    civil service 410 BC
    music artist 260 BC
    Alfabet 200 BC (build research)
No AI that I met had it at this point.
philo 140 BC (golden age, switch into caste/pacifism)
metal casting - paper - calendar (need happy/health)- education.
After that lib - bio in 960 AD for the national park. 6 forests left
    astro for observatory
    economy for great merchant.
    rep parts
    steampower for levy
    steel for ironworks
    medicine for environmentalism
    physics for scientist
railroad for extra hammers on gem mines
    electricy for commerce on windmills
trade for drama and get globe theater.
    refrigeration - superconductors for labs
rocketry for apollo program. at least 10 turns too early.
    assembly line for assembly plant
    industrialism for ind. park
    plastics for hydro plant.
    robotics for the space elevator.
Than beeline fusion, use engineer and a scientist for a golden age
    genetics
    ecology

When I launched, victoria had 36400 culture in her 3rd city, and produced 368/turn.
At that rate it would take 37 turns, while I would win in 30 turns. I still put the espionage slider at 100% and destroyed most of the culture buildings with spies.
After about 20 turns of this, Victoria lowered the slider again, and the third city got to only 44000.

The other continent had buddism and Hinduism, and Justinian who wiped out Saladin.
Justinian got really powerful, but AI's suck at intercontinental invasions.

    Capital in 1635

    Civ4ScreenShot1246.JPG

It's much harder to win on a larger map, or with more AI's. The techs are more expensive, and more AI's can go culture. If an overseas AI goes culture you're out of luck. Good OCC sites on the coast are much rarer.

I researched agriculture, masonry, bronze working, writing, mys, poly, prie, col, mathematics.

I oracled CS, built pyrs, pantheon, GL and maussollus. We had Christianity and Confucianism and I tried to maintain all continent in confucianism. Though Victoria and Hammurabi were switching to Christianity.

In my game Saladin wiped out Justinian.

Do you guys build 2 engines? I have research path: fiber > fusion > ecology > genetic and in time while ecology and genetics are researched I have the time to build the 2nd engine.

When do you guys switch to state property and free religion? I go around when composites are researched and thrusters and casings need to be built. I also triggered 2 golden ages.

Why build 2 engines if it is only 2 turns faster travell? If you are able to build an engine in 1 turn, build it, but be honest - it is impossible.

I dont know how it scales in Epic (15/18?) but I still doubt you can construct an engine in 2 turns. It only make sense if you have no other space parts to build at the moment while researching final techs, but I cannot even imagine it. It is better to build more thrusters, as they lower the time the same amount of turns, and are much cheaper

Usually I only travel on 1 engine. Thrusters anything between 1 - 5 depending on how quick I can get them built and whether there is any advantage to actually building them.

Civics I normally stay in Pacifism - Enviro - depending on how many forests I have in the BFC and the diplo status.

I might have time to play the save tomorrow.
But nice to see how others played!

I'm still wondering why forest preserves+national park are superior to watermills+state property in space race.
Don't watermills produce more :hammers: than an engineer? Perhaps the multipliers work differently than i thought?
And they add one extra :food: which translates into a specialist at some point?

Then i also noticed that neither barbertje nor Sleepless mention Computers in their write-up. Without Internet i always seem to fall behind in teching
