OK, folks ... the book is wrong when it says you can't reuse armies. Here's how to unload obsolete units and reload current units into your army.

The secret is the "j" (join) command.

Summary:

1. Stack a unit with the army that is of the same type that is in the army.

2. Select that single unit and hit the "j" key. 3.
3. Move the unit one or more spaces away from the army.

4. [poof!] Magically, all of the units of that type that are in the army will leave the army and follow the other unit -- but the army will stay where it was.

5. Either move the army to a city and reload it ... or if it is in a city ... just reload it right there with better units.

Tips:

1. If you have an army of Bowmen or chariots or swordsmen or whatever ... ALWAYS, ALWAYs, ALWAYS retain one extra of that unit type in a safe location and DO NOT upgrade it until after you have upgraded your army. Having that single obsolete unit is the key to unloading the army ... so you don't want to lose that "key."

2. I recommend/prefer keeping your extra unit of that type that is in the army outside of a city so that if you later use the "shift u" command to upgrade all units, you will still have at least one available for the army unloading.

3. Since your armies are reusable, ensure that you use your army at full or nearly full "rested" strength and not unnecessarily make it vulnerable.

Kindest regards,

Oogie

This is a well established 'bug' and will probably be fixed in the next patch. I hope that it is not fixed untill an unload order is available for the Amry.

You have it BACKWARDS calling it a "bug", although I fully agree
with your sentiments.

The "bug" is Firaxis not allowing us to unload an Army in the first place. Armies are useless enough, and I'd never waste a leader on them; they'd be slightly less useless if they could be unloaded.

If Firaxis takes that away from us, as they did the "multi.sav" cheat, all they are doing is screwing things up.

BTW, using the Editor to allow Armies to be unloaded doesn't seen to work.

I haven't had any problem with crashes from armies... although I only ever used this bug once. They did say that they removed it in 1.21.
Zouave, I agree that it is really stupid that we can't unload armies. Why can't Firaxis hurry up and let do it normally?? or at least make them easier to build so they don't have to be conserved so much.

Well, not only a bug, but I believe it's a cheat considering GOTM.
But it sucks that your army can become obsolete. I can see why they shouldn't be unloadable (seperate units heal faster than an army) but it should be upgradable at least.

I think one of the reason they don't want to give Army's an "unload/reload" is that you could really take advantage of it during war (not to upgrade the units).

Think about an Army with 4 tanks. You bust up a city with it on one turn and take it down to a few HP. Usually you would need a few turns to get it healed again. If you could unload it, you could just reload it with 4 fresh tanks the next turn. Probably would make it too powerful.

However, I do believe that you should be able to upgrade units in an Army, and that units that become elite within an Army should still be able to produce a leader.

Thanks Chieftan ... no, I don't have a workaround for the "no unload army" feature in v1.29 ... sorry.

Maybe you can help me to solve a problemo.

My CivEdit.exe fails to boot every time ... I get a not saying that an error log message will be generated. I've tried reloading it ... same thing happens. How do I clear the windows error log so that CivEdit.exe will work again?

Help!!!!!

Kindest regards,

Oogie
