Alright lets assume we are around the modern age. What is the optimal teching in order to get the fastest space race.

Lets also assume military is not a factor. And lets also assume wonders are not a factor (besides the elevator). Lets also assume you have plenty cities and are able to build the elevator.

Clearly then IMO, theres two different reasonable ways you can go about teching. One would be if you have a great engineer, and one would be if you didn't have a great engineer. With a GE you could get some of the space techs first, and then get the elevator right before you move onto the toughest parts. W/o a great engineer you would want the elevator tech ASAP, since it takes longer to build.

So if you are going for speed (fastest finish) what would your tech order be with a great engineer and without a great engineer.

In most cases the limiting factor is science, not production. If you have just built Apollo, you can start Casings in 5 cities, they don't need to be highly productive, since there is plenty of time before the rest of the techs is discovered. Likewise, Thrusters (Satellites).

After that, select two highest productive cities, and plan the building in synch with teching. Start a part, research the tech for the next one, start it in the second city. Research the third part tech, start it in the first city (it should have finished the previous part by that time), and so on. Leave the least expensive part (Ecology) to the end, and plan to build it in the highest productive city.

You don't need Space Elevator unless your science is a way ahead of production. If it is, replace a few farms/cottages around your production cities with Watermills or Workshops. In fact, you can even live without Aluminium in many cases.

The tech path since Rocketry is something like that:
Industrialism (Aluminium) -> Satellites (keep your cities busy until next tech is discovered, which will take a while) -> Computers (Labs) -> Fusion (GE if you are the first, if you have another GP, start Golden Age) -> Fiber Optics -> Robotics -> Ecology.

If you're confinent of your production, then its usually quickest to go straight for fiberoptics and build the internet to get the rest.

It can be risky tho, because doing this gives the AI a head start on their parts production, and you can't stagger the parts, because you'll get most of the techs at the same time.

Start in the future era and you need to research nothing. It's the best and fastest way of winning space races.

Not really because starting in ancient you woul dhave finished your ship much earlier.

Pottery
Alphabet
Democracy
Assembly Line
Steel
Computers
Fusion
rest of the spaceship techs
Is that the only needed techs or the important techs?

I agree, if it's Emperor or lower you mean but Deity a future is the best. See the HoF. :)
