Checked the forums and havent found anything similar.

I always lacked some kind of technology limiter in Civ - to play a little longer in one era or another. I usually like to rush my research, to have some advantage over AI or simply to 'keep up' . Even the 'marathon' game lengh does not provide enough time to 'get bored' with one era.

Lower difficulty levels in 'age of empires 2' provided a limitation - AI players couldn't advance into next era before the player(thats another interesting idea by the way) that gave slow pokes like me enough time to enjoy watching the scenery or simply plan ahead.

Of course i understand that the whole purpose of this game is to 'slide' through all eras - yet somehow leaves a lust for more. Optional ability to limit game to selected era would add some flavour for those, who finds certain eras amusing without searching for mods.

Having an option to cut off the tech tree at a certain era is a possibility, I probably wouldn't use it but would not be opposed.

As for other ideas of tech advancement - there actually were stricter limitations in previous civ games. Assuming you are referring to civ4, you are right you can progress further down various lines in the tree. In civ3, you had to advance through certain eras with certain techs before anything in another era could be reached. Players generally didn't like this which is why it was changed I think and it does look like civ5 continues civ4's path, so sorry to say you probably won't see that unless it's modded.
