Orthanc's Creation Thread

Progress for today; cannon ports, including the two bow ports for the twin triple-cannons, and the ribs along the hull. Also, I've made the teeth and other details stand out more by making them a lighter texture rather than just civ-colouring various bits, once modelling is said and done I look into the textures one last time. Meanwhile, preview!

Work on the Stern begins tomorrow.

nice. I have a question will this unit have the front attack animation? or maybe a Kraken atack? or it will be just normal ship attack?

Yes.
To all three.
Though you won't be able to use the front and side attacks at the same time, it'd look weird.

oh and one more question will it be surfice units or underwater? or youll make bouth?
in that case it could be - surfice side attacks
underwater - jumps to surfice fire fronts and then calls Kraken then submerges again

Yes.
To all three.

Recoiling back diagonally? Also, it looks pretty cool so far! :goodjob:

Recoiling back diagonally?
Not quite, I meant that the side-cannons firing will be its own animation (ie:AttackA), and the bow-chasers firing will also be its own animation, probably AttackC, and AttackB would be the Kraken tentacles shooting up and whipping around. Attacks A and B would work together, since the ship will have its broadside to the enemy in both of them, but AttackC requires the ship to point its bow at the enemy. If you were to use all three, the ship would do an instant 90 degree turn as Attack C starts then instantly turn back as it ends :crazyeye:
So basically you'll end up with a choice of using Attacks A-B or just Attack C. Though I'll probably make an Attack D where the bow points at the enemy during the tentacle attack, to work with Attack C...

EDIT:
Stern is about 1/3 done, here's what we've got:

It's this bit of the stern...

that I'm afraid of, for what-should-be-quite obvious reasons
I forget what site I got all my images of the Dutchman from, but they rock quite hard. They also showed me that only one side of the ship was completed entirely. The port (left) side of the ship was left half open, guess that's to let the cameras in easier. But it probably also gave the already very-taxed digital artists even higher blood pressure editing in the missing side.

Man your so good with ships :) I think Ill post you mine voyage century ships you would make a master piece out of it

Good deal of work completed for the stern, still haven't approached that absurd sculpture at the very top of the stern, that's for tomorrow:

Hmm, gonna thicken the window muntins (that's the bars in the windows, had to go to Wikipedia to find the word I was trying to say) so that they have a better chance of actually showing up.
EDIT: Thicker window muntins in the preview that shows the whole ship.

Yes, I know I'll be simplifying alot, still leaves me figuring out what the best way is to create the general shape of that mess:crazyeye:

Well it is made of wood.
So it was a tree, just now it's a death tree.

even tho its on civ scale we all know someone will try to make it as much acurate as posible becose someone here makes very very detailed units
edit: just look on the back of the ship now not even half of it will be seen in civ scale (all those butiful small details we all love)

Stern's done! Basically it's just a few cones, the window (that's the yellow bit, you'll see it better in a direct-back view), the lamps+lamp posts and one large tentacle and a whole bunch of spheres and rib-like things stuck everywhere. While I was at that I also made the anchors and fixed up the deck. Just need to add some railings and one or two other details and we'll be putting up de masts yarr:

wow nice its a lot better then I expected. BTW theres one tiny detail that doesnt match. If you look on that picture you posted earlyer theres no windov there but youve puted it there anyway.
I cant wait for final version of this ship it looks realy promising

The window is dark in the real photo because
A) It's daytime
B) Possibly it might not exist at all on the real model, but it does in the movie, see 0:37 of this movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=700UZSNrXR0&feature=related

But thanks for noticing, I did have to double check to make sure I saw that right.
