Osama bin Laden's beard seen in a new video tape featuring the Al-Qaeda supremo has baffled the top US spy.

The traditional gray beard of the terror mastermind looked trimmed and dyed in black in the video released last week, his first of appearance since October 2004.

Questions over the elusive Saudi extremist's beard cropped up at a Congressional hearing Monday featuring top US security experts, including Director of National Intelligence Michael McConnell.

"First, is this his beard?" Republican Senator Norm Coleman asked the spy chief. "Do we expect that -- is it a signal?"

McConnell swiftly rejected any possibility that the hair in his chin was intended to send any signal to his Al-Qaeda members.

"So far, we do not think there's been a signal. He's done this periodically, as has (Ayman al-) Zawahiri (the group's second-in-command), and there has not been a correlation necessarily between one of these tapes or a public statement and a particular event," McConnell said.

But he wondered whether Bin Laden's beard was genuine.

"The big question in the community this morning, 'Is that beard real,' because as you know, just a few years ago, the last time he appeared, it was very different," he said.

"So we don't know if it's dyed and trimmed or real, but that's one of the things we're looking at. But no specific message."

Wait, so you're insinuating that there can't possbily be a big, mega-evil group, except for the government? I dislike the government as much as the next guy, but the fact that there are bad, large scale orginizations, both affiliated and non-affiliated with the government seems pretty obvious.

We exagerate Al Qaeda without a doubt... but they do have dangerous motives.

Not in the GI Joe sense - I don't think they wear corny costumes, and fly purple helicopters. But I definitely do think that Al Qaeda does exist, and they are a danger to the US.

There undoubtedly is an AQ, but I suspect they have been blown out of all proportion in terms of capability and logistics.

While I don't disagree that Al Qaeda has probably been presented as a larger threat than they actually are, that does not mean that they are no threat at all.

So your evidence is "I read a report awhile back that there was some logo on a video tape". Right. First, why should I believe you without any corroborating evidence? Second, even if I believe you, why should I believe that your source was valid, especially if I cannot verify it myself? Third, why is it more likely that the US is putting out these films (With AQ letting them do that, despite the US being at war with AQ) than AQ just doing it? Even if that logo was there, why couldn't AQ have put it on there to cause confusion? Or couldn't this guy have gotten it wrong? Why is your explanation more probable than any of the others?

I'm genuinely curious, and I'll look at any information you can give me, but it doesn't look like you will. That's fine, but you really shouldn't make assertions of this kind without corroborating evidence of some kind - you wouldn't put up with me if I did that, so it seems to me that you should play fair.

Curt, your beliefs are more extreme than your average religious person's beliefs. Although the government certainly is capable of such a thing, I don't see any real motivation nor real evidence. Sound like mere speculation on your part.
