I'm just curious to know if any fellow FFH player has played the Warlords series in the past. you know, turn based strategy by SSG ( a.k.a. Infinite Interactive ) with a fantasy setting and heroes. Darklords Rising is still one of my all-time favourite games. did any of you ever play one of these games, or are you all MoM junkies? ( :p )

Played Warlords 3 iirc, was fun but very hard.

edit: great music too btw.

Warlords 4 and Warlords Battlecry 3, for my part.

Actually, I've never played MoM before; I have, however, played Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic (When I took a look at FfH1, I couldn't help but be amused by how many leaders/civs were taken from that series.)

warlords 4 was very crappy compared to warlords 3 DLR . if you ever feel in the mood for some not-so-retro gaming, I suggest you get it :p

warlords battlecry 3 was great as well. although I prefer TBS... shame I played too much battlecry 2 and when 3 came out it felt like more of the same and I got bored fast :(

Shadow Magic was definitely awesome :D

This is now a "look at the obscure TBS fantasy games I've played" circlejerk topic.

How bout that dominions 3? Pretty crappy, huh?

Dominions 3 would be awesome if it wasn't for the graphics and absurd price of $55. Besides, Paradox games are the best TBSes (even though they are RTSes). ;)

I loved DLR! Many, many hours were spent on that game. In fact, I was just thinking about digging out my old copy a few days ago...

The AI was pretty decent for it, and it had some fun scenarios, as well. I really liked how easy it was to create a custom themed army using the editor.

Warlords 1, 2 and 3 were my favourite games for many years, sort of my introduction to the whole strategy-thingy. There's a few threads on how to play FFH on the Illuria-map, if you're familiar with it. (One of the best maps ever :) )

Oh the nostalgia. I remember when me and my friends hot-seated through hours of warlords I-games. I was most often Lord Bane, or sometimes the Elvellie, (still mainly playing as Svartalfar, Sidar and that kind of themes), pondering wether to expand westwards across the nomansland north of the Horse Lords, or to begin the begin the long and burdensome march through the great marhses against the Orcs of Kor.

Then mom came home, threw us out of the house (it was ofcourse in the middle of the summer and we were expected to go swimming or sailing or chase after girls at the local hot-dog-stand), and what did we do? We chased the minors off the playground, drew up the map of the game and then began plotting invasions, alliances, and so on till night arrived and we could return inside to the computer.

Good times!!

Illuria is a nice map, but Erythea ( the default Warlords 2 map ) is still my all-time favourite. I was about 10 yrs old when I started playing war2. at first I didn't really understand how it worked. I had no idea it had turns so when my units were out of movements and the "crossed circles" indicating 0 mp appeared, I thought they were traps set by my enemies and that was why I couldn't move there

then I found the end turn button and it all began :D

The graphics wouldn't matter that much to me, but the highest price I would ever pay for such game is $30.
Armageddon Empires is another indie gem of TBS, and it feels much more polished, yet I feel even the $30 price tag it comes with is the maximum which is in any way tolerable.

Anyway, as for Warlords, I still regret I ever traded away my copy of Warlords 2 Deluxe. It had this nice, huge box...
I even created tons of scenarios for my own use (this was in the pre-internet era), I'm not sure but I think I spent more time designing than actually playing. Wish there was a current equivalent to King's Bounty's "The Legend"...

Don't remember that one from the top of my head, I thought there were like 4-5 something default Warlords2 maps?

Hmm have anyone seen any of the other classical Warlords maps for Civ? Other than Illuria, that is.

I can't think of any other "classical" map, but war2 deluxe had some great maps imho. I loved the hand-shaped one, the star-shaped one, the wheel-shaped one and the spiderweb-shaped one :D

Erythea was the default map in war2 iirc, which means that it was the map that was selected by default, i.e. if you did not change the selection... it was the one with 3 large islands, NW one with lich king/empire/grey dwarves, NE one with dark elves/sirians/horse tribes , and southern one with stone giants/ussyrian orks.

Dominions 3 was a heck of a lot of fun, and the reason why I'm here. I've played and modded that game to the point where I felt I needed a long break. Picked up a copy of Civ 4 in the bargain bin with the hope that someone was carrying on the excellent Warhammer mod for civ 3. Found FFH instead and stuck around since.

The warlords series was a big hit with me, and I don't dare to think about all the hours I've spent with those games. But in my opinion they should have kept to the TBS style instead of developing those odd Battlecry versions. And Warlords 4 was almost a big a disappointment as Master of Orion 3. I understand why developers want to try out something new, but the TBS genre in particular have suffered from a lot of very odd choices when it comes to trying out new designs.

But I guess it's because creating a good TBS game takes a huge amount of time, and new ideas sort of get rushed in without proper testing.

what happened with warlords 4 was that the developers were, well, developing a good game, but then they had lot of troubles ( splitting, and others I can't really remember but pretty serious ) and they had to restart from scratch. problem is, the new publisher gave them like 6 months to come up with the game. Steve Fawkner, lead designer, has publicly apologized many times for how bad the game is compared to previous installations. he also stated that he's actually surprised that they could come out with a decent game in 6 months only. guess that story tells everything about how commercial game-designing sucks nowadays due to money/time restrains. thankfully FFH is a mod project and unafected by that kind of stuff :D

I played so much of Warlords 3 in my freshman year of high school that I dug out the CD and loaded the musical tracks into iTunes. At some point I'll give Darklords Rising the same treatment if I decide I need more "Surprise!" tracks; the ones from 3 proper are always good for a smile and some nostalgia.

I was, however, pretty bad at it, and mostly played a custom civilization with barbarians for infantry and sandworms for my "big unit," which was a good time.

If you're at all in to puzzle games, I endorse Puzzle Quest. Defeating Lord Bane match-3 style felt just as good as it did with actual units. One of the dirty secrets of the X-box 360 is that it's got this, and Street Fighter: Puzzle Fighter (which is more like Columns crossed with Dr Mario) in the Arcade.

Damn, wish I could get my hands on the soundtracks, seem to have lost my discs. Anyone know if the ST's are out on the web somewhere? (without breaking any forum rules).
