Other civ like games but..

Now that we’re waiting for 7, I wanna play something new.

But I don’t wanna play 4x with fancy graphics. But more like civ2 style 4x game. Like flat 2D.

BUT… are there any new 4x games in this style? Like they released in last couple years or so?

I dont want to play old 2d 4x.

Can't think of any recent commercial games with a classic Civ2 style..

However there's fully playable indie/fan games in the Civ2 style that are recently updated eg..

Power of Planets

Although you say flat 2D implying something more Civ1 looking than Civ2 which is isometric 2.5D..

FreeCiv has a flat 2D Civ1 looking mode.. FreeCol is working on one but it's not ready yet. Theocracy comes to mind as a modern 2D Civ like.

Not entirely true. It was finished, but not to the intended design. Scope had to be reduced due to Jon's deteriorating health. But eventually he did issue a "final" update to finish the game.

Well, calling it finished is not entirely true either - add broken to that.
I prefer to call it not finished - still waiting for the v1.5.
Wish I could recommend to buy it, but €30 on steam..
