So, the headline already gave away what we are doing here. We are playing as Austria on a standard sized Pangaea map with quick speed and the level is Emperor. The aim is to reach a CV. To your aid you have a nice start but make sure to expand relatively soon (at least in my game one AI went liberty and another one, which didn´t, usually does). Make sure to build some (or all) of those appealing midgame wonders that generate culture and you will do just fine. A secondary objective is to annex at least one city state.

In my game I got annoyed by the yellow lady and decided to reduce her expansion but still found enough time to build those wonders and I won a smooth CV on t200. I could have done much faster but where is the fun in that? ;) Enjoy the ride!

OECG#78: The 100 million inhabitants challenge

Here we have the aid of a nice start and the space to expand early. Make the most of that, since the challenge of this game is to reach at least 100 million people in your empire before the end of the game. We play as Germany on a large sized Contients map with standard speed and the level is Immortal. Go in any direction and win a resounding win. You have all the tools needed!

I had a blast of a game, eventually winning a CV on t317. This in itself is not impressive but I was in a position to win by any VC at the time of the win. I was the ally of 14/20 city states and had the money to buy the rest of them if necessary. My army also consisted of 20-25 XComs and some Stealth bombers, which would have made it easy to get a DomV in maybe 10-15 turns (and I could have started much earlier). I had also researched all techs in the tech tree and thus could have won a SV ages ago. But once again, this game was too much fun to bother to end it! It is also quite rare for me to found six cites myself. I only hope you will have a similar game. Enjoy!

    Re: Finland

We've played them before, a long time ago, right? (otherwise why am I subscribed to them?) Since I didn't remember much about them I started a practice game. Haven't quite finished it yet. I got a *lot* of rune singers. Early in the game I used them for great works of writing. I didn't build a writers guild until the Modern era because I didn't need one, then I bulbed all my great writers. But at some point (Industrial era?) the singers got a new action to spread religion. They seem to be at least as strong as a great prophet (maybe stronger) but they only have 2 charges.

If I save earlier-era rune singers, will they gain the spread religion ability when I reach the proper era?

In this game we play as the Aztecs (Montezuma). This is on Immortal and quick game pace. Map is small base pangea with low sea level and strategic balance. Raging barbs is on. There are several highly aggressive civs in this game so you need to make sure they're busy unless you want to war them early...

I went four city tradition and I managed to snag six goodie huts. As my second policy, just after opening tradition, I also opened honor to maximize on barb culture since raging barbs was on. Victory was achieved using late game Domination (started to war when I was just about to get bombers when one of my neighbors used a citadel on me to steal a lux). I managed to get Desert Folklore and was first to found a religion. I got several valuable wonders, such as Oracle, Petra, Leaning Tower, Forbidden Palace and a few others.

I had a total of three Jaguars (started with one and built two), and I tried to keep them alive and upgraded through the ages to see how many promotions I could stack. Two were still alive when I won.

I played this map with removed (essentially) XP cap from barbs. If you wish, it's easy to enable without installing a mod (thus it's Steam achievement compatible), you just need to edit the relevant GlobalDefines.xml-file and increase the value for BARBARIAN_MAX_XP_VALUE from 30 to, say, 900 (the Brave New World-file is located here for me: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization V\Assets\DLC\Expansion2\Gameplay\XML\GlobalDefines.xml, ymmv)

To be honest, I have no idea. Maybe you can fool around with them and see what you can find out?

I did, and now I know less than I did before. Late-game rune singers sometimes have both actions, or one or the other. If there's a pattern, it has to do with how many you get rather than the era. There's probably a limited number of runic writings.

Settled two cities on this on, one at the wonder and one to the west of spawn. Had conquered the continent with half a dozen crossbows before hitting the Renaisance, and took that force with some Tercios and Conquistadors over the sea. Machine guns with extra range and attacks were actually useful. Finished around turn 310.

A crossbow rush is something I haven't done for years. I was somewhat surprised I was able to keep up in tech, despite delaying things like universities more than I usually do. It was good to be pushed towards a different type of victory.

I'm Playing OECG 76 Spain also.

This may have been the most fun first 100 or so turns I've ever had in Civ 5. I took chances that I usually don't take and most of them paid off. I also had a dominant religion with two beliefs I never take. Here's a recap of the first 120 turns.

    Spoiler :
The start didn't look that great to me so I moved my warrior to the hill to the NW to see if there was anything hiding in the fog. There wasn't so I settled on the Sugar; I love settling on luxes.

T6. Discovered Sri Pada. Kind of far away for a first expo but I bought a settler as soon as my city hit pop 2 and headed for it anyway.

T12. Settled next to Sri Pada. Bought the Gold and Spices so the two nearby CS wouldn't get them. Now its a 3-lux city. Gandhi didn't like that though; he asked me not to settle near him, I said too bad.

    T13. Pantheon: One With Nature.

T19. First to find Uluru. It is super far away and another CS is about to grow to it. But I threw caution to the wind and bought another settler and rushed over there.

    T27. Wow, got a religion on T27! Catholicism - Tithe/Pagodas of course.

T29. Settled Seville and bought a tile but don't have enough for Uluru. Gandhi really didn't like that - I forward settled him with my first two expos and bought land near him.

T30. Bought Uluru and I have +29 fpt already!

T52. Cordoba founded in the middle of our widespread empire to connect everything up.

T67. Enhanced our religion after using the early faith for missionaries to spread it to all our cities and some CS and Seoul. Took Holy Warriors and Just War. I haven’t taken Holy Warriors since realizing how expensive the units are. And I don’t think I’ve ever taken Just War but decided to this time because since we’re on a continent with only 3 other AI, I plan on conquering the entire continent before meeting the rest of the AI. Also, Mt. Sinai is right next to the Korean expo, that should be a massive amount of faith.

T76. Capture Delhi thus eliminating Gandhi from the game.

T96. It was a long haul to get all my units up north but I capture Seoul with the help of Just War. Shortly after I capture Busan, puppet it and the governor starts working Mt. Sinai for 24 fpt all by itself!

T115. Capture Jakarta. This was a little harder because Indonesia had quite a few Kris Swordsmen.

T120. Capture last enemy city of Medan – the continent is ours.

Whew, that was an amazing 120 turns. I’m getting 82 fpt – the Holy War units don’t seem that expensive when you’re generating that much faith. I had so much faith I was buying units I didn’t really need and letting it get Prophets even though every city on the continent is my religion. I figure I’ll save them up to convert the other continent’s cities right before I attack them with my Just War enhanced units. Too bad I can’t purchase naval units with Holy Warriors; I guess that would be OP being able to purchase Frigates with Faith.

Edit. My production is pitiful, that may be a problem. So I'm going to go full Commerce. That together with being able to buy all my units with faith should help out with the low production issue.

I just played out the most recent Germany game, number 78, with a turn 256 science win (hey 2^8, nice!). I went for 6 city tradition after seeing the challenge and the large map size. I personally really liked the 100 million people restriction because it meant that I had to focus on food to the end, even getting buildings like hospitals and medical labs that are never worth building normally, but I didn't have to directly slow down my win or anything like that, as I broke 100 million pop 3 turns before I won. It also lent itself to my favorite style of play, tall peaceful play, because unhappiness would cripple war builds and the population demo formula is exponential with city population, not with the total population, which makes liberty less good too. I'm curious whether more or fewer cities would've been better here(maybe Constantinople for all of Theodora's wonders?), or whether 6 self-planted was right. My religion was earth mother tithe pagodas, buying most of them for much-needed happiness before taking swords into plowshares and IP.

P.S. does anyone else love just repeatedly confusing the ai prophets when they try to get into your land?

    OECG#80: Petra delight

Here is a game for those of us, who like to build wonders. Your first task will be to build Petra and after that your capital will be fantastic. In this game we play as Egypt on a large Continents map with standard speed. The difficulty level is Immortal. You will have the space for expansions and you will have some sheltering city states further helping you to have the time to settle the land that rightfully is yours. Go in any direction and have a great game. Enjoy!

I haven't started this one yet because it's immortal. But I have played a couple of Montezuma games at emperor level with that mod for almost unlimited XP from fighting barbs and it's a hoot. Even w/o the mod Monty is a lot of fun. I usually take Tradition opener, Honor opener, and finish both Tradition and the right side of Honor (and maybe a little Patronage or Commerce) before hitting the Renaissance and filling Rationalism. I like the right side of Honor here rather than the left (both are good) because it gives a little more happiness and faster city border expansion, and makes it a lot cheaper to upgrade Jags through the ages. I can come back for the left side of Honor later when the ideology wars start.

Last game, I built one privateer and leveraged a huge and diverse navy from it. (I especially liked capturing a bunch of Sea Beggars and upgrading them to destroyers) Besides that one privateer, I only built 2 caravels for exploration (they didn't fight much) and few submarines and missile cruisers.

About ready to try #79 now. :)

I'm playing this one too and whew, troubled lands is right. Its a nice start though so hopefully can make something happen. I debated moving to the Dyes and settling there but given the title "Troubled Lands", I decided to SiP for the defensive hill bonus. Its been fun so far. Quick pace always throws me off though, I don't ever seem to be going faster than standard speed. Here's a recap of the first 222 turns.

    Spoiler :
Started exploring and loved the sight of all the prime desert lands. Since it was a small map I figured I wouldn't need two scouts and my build order was Scout, Monument, Jaguar. I met Jursalem and Vatican City early so got desert folklore with no problem. Then the fun began; in rapid succession I met Atilla, Shaka, Ashurbanipal and Harold and I knew where the title came from. Who would've thought Liz would be the reasonable leader on the map.

For SP, I opened Tradition and then went full Honor. Figured with the raging barbs and raging AI, combined with the Aztec UA, it would be a good move. Also, opened Patronage and Commerce. I built a few more jaguar along the way to get the forest bonus and I was glad I did. There were patches of forest between my empire and Shaka which would come in handy later.

Ended up building 4 cities in a fairly easily defensible formation surrounding the central desert. Had to rush the southwestern city to prevent Liz or Ashur from getting there first. Then settled another one to the NW to secure more floodplains from Vatican City. The fourth one I settled right on the Silver in a mountain pass for defense. I wanted to settle it further east on the river but that wouldn't have been as defensible.

The first war was Shaka attacking Ashur. The Assyrian Empire didn't last very long; The Zulu took them out fairly early. Then, Atilla asked me to go to war against Shaka. This would be a bold move. But I was allied with Jerusalem who was between Aztec lands and Zulu lands and also with Ormus who was just north of the furthest Zulu expansion. I said give me 10 turns to prepare. I switched to war footing and built some more Jags to turn into Swordsmen and more CB.

War with the Zulu was basically a stalemate. Atilla failed to take Shaka’s eastern expo even with a few horse archers, a ram, and Pikemen. Then he peaced out. Luckily, Liz and Harold joined the fray and Liz took the Assyrian cities that Shaka had captured earlier. I got to kill some Impi so that was fun. And then Shaka sued for peace and gave me a couple luxes and a lot of gpt so I agreed. I was in no position to take his capital anyway, it was behind mountains and hills.

Stayed at peace for a while and built up infrastucture. But then around T175, out of nowhere, Harold and Atilla joint DoW’d me. And we had been friends the whole game. I could be in trouble. Especially when Harold started unleashing tons of GWB and I was no where near getting airplanes. I had to withdraw my troops out of range; they were getting killed at least one unit per turn. (Edit. I guess they DoW me earlier than T175 because I get planes on T177 and I know there was a good 10-12 turns where I was getting hammered with GWB and couldn't do anything about it.) I tried to protect my CS allies but Buenos Aries fell to Harold’s planes and ships. I was able to prevent Atilla from capturing Ormus since he didn’t have planes yet.

    Spoiler Joint DoW :
    T175 Attacked on two fronts.jpg

My cities were never in danger though because I had a nice defensive mountain range between the Aztec empire and the agressors. So I bided my time and went full on in science to get planes. When I did, Montezuma’s revenge was at hand. I took Buenos Aries back and kept it so I’d have a coastal city and quickly bought two Battleships. Along with my GWB and Triplanes the Aztec marched into Danish territory. We were the first to Bombers and Rocket Artillery so after that it was no contest. I just captured Copenhagen with its 17 wonders! How Harold was able to build such an army and wonder spam at the same time I don’t know. That's where we stand on T222.

Thanks for sharing! I had really fun with this map and wanted to give others opportunity to play it, but I also realized how interesting it is to see what other players did with exactly the same start I had!

Yep, comparing the differences between games is the best part about these shared games. I especially like to compare maps and see how people settled their cities. Do you have any screenshots from your game?

Nowadays I have a "no crap policy", meaning that I will capture any profet approaching my cities. One of this days I will also have to try out the modded civ Bohemia. Their UA is that foreign missionaries inside their borders might convert to military units, strengthening the Bohemian army!

Yes, I totally agree, it's very interesting to see that! Unfortunately, I don't have any screenshots left of this playthrough. I will make sure to take more next really good map I get. I believe I settled my Texcoco a bit more East than you did, and managed to get away with that, other than that it looks very similar.

Actually finished this one, T244 CV! I don't think I've ever finished a game as Austria before; I never quite liked the UA, if a CS is my ally its giving me stuff for free basically so why would I want to take it over? But it worked well in this game; I took over 2 CS. One to get a coastal city. The other to get close to the cultural leader so I could Musician bomb them.

    Spoiler T244 CV :
Started out moving the settler next to the mountain and founding Vienna there. I discovered Mt. Kilimanjaro and rushed a settler over there to grab it before the CS could. Rome was very close so I settled Graz on a nice riverlands location in the middle; it ended up being my largest city at pop 39.

These would be the only 3 cities I would found because Rome forward settled me - even stealing two pastures from my capital. And I couldn't let that stand because I had taken culture from pastures as my pantheon. So I DoW'd Caesar and burned that city to the ground. Then Harold and Cathy joined in and sandwiched the Roman Empire. I had to take one more Roman city so that the Danes wouldn't get it and be way too close; so my fourth city was Cumae. I married LaVenta to get a coastal city. Much later I married Sidon which was on the other side of the large bay to the east. I did that because Harold was about to take it and I wanted my musicians to have an easier time getting to England, who had quite a lot of culture.

Denmark ended up grabbing Rome itself and Caesar was out of the game. I wanted to play a peaceful cultural game so I build many forts along the southern and eastern reaches of my empire because I knew at some point Harold was going to attack.

Attack he did but he couldn't get through my Maginot Line. I had to rush troops to my CS allies (same exact thing happened last game as the Aztecs) and I was able to protect them all. Cathy again joined in the war, DoW'ing Harold. So did everyone else; Harold had made everyone mad. I didn't really want Rome but I had to go for it because I didn't want Cathy to get it. I ended up liberating it and bringing Caesar back to life. (I did Citadel a tile right next to Rome to steal some oil and aid in its capture. But interestingly when I liberated it, Rome got the tile the Citadel was on. I guess the game gives all tiles right next to the city back when its liberated.)

I did get many of the cultural wonders, including Sistine Chapel and The Louvre; I even was able to get the full theming bonus from The Louvre. In the end I had 611 tourism and was influential with everyone but England. I needed to use 4 GMu bombs to overcome her culture. A fifth was born a couple turns before I got victory so didn't need that one.

It was fun and relaxing game; only defensive wars were needed so I didn't have to trek troops all over the place. I thought I might have to conquer England in order to win but after I won International Games and got the Internet, I had enough faith to buy 3 GMu which were worth a lot of tourism. A nice game!
