Other Enjoyable Civilization V Games (Immortal and below)

So much for the friendly approach. ;) ;)
 I actually tried friendly. :) I would have liked to have declared friendships for the boost to great people production. Some of the distant AI's started denouncing me, and when I looked at the diplomacy report the only negative was "They have denounced us!" I think the denouncements were just to impress each other; I mostly ignored them. I sold them luxuries at a discount and I voted for most of their resolutions, and they weren't a threat. But it meant very few research agreements.

Rome and The Aztecs were obviously going for domination (that didn't work so well for Monty) and I was the next target. Plus I needed generals and admirals for that Nobel Prize thing.

I started #92 again last night. This time I settled my second city on the coastal desert tile to east and a little bit south (4 tiles from Rome.) I can use that city as a canal connecting the bay to the ocean, and it has enough fish and crabs to thrive in spite of the desert. Settled 2 more; one on the copper and one on the truffles. After getting the national college up (which was a little late because I was building Machu Picchu at the time), I settled a 5th city on the west coast. I don't think I'll finish it, but it's a totally different game. Rome has no tiles to get a foothold on my territory or even come ashore before declaring war. Theodora is still alive and doing extremely well, with lots of wonders. Oddly enough, she seemed to be ignoring religion but then beelined Theocracy and built Hagia Sophia to found one. I just bribed her to declare war on Rome. And I'm friendly with everyone, but I've been beaten to a lot of wonders that I should have built. By this time the first run through, nobody liked me for no obvious reasons, and my friends hated me -- well before ideologies kicked-in. I think even tho' Rome is friendly he's being deceptive and secretly hates my guts, but the Byzantines may take him out.

Interestingly Theodora didn´t get a religion in my game at all. All of the three far away got one and them Polynesia and me.

OECG#93 In the Spirit of the Great Lakes

This time we play as the Iroquois on a standard sized Pangaea map. The level is Emperor and the pace is quick. The first thing that comes to mind is: is this really Pangaea? It is indeed but the shape is very unusual and already for that reason I think you should try out this game. Tha start is also among the strongest possible and in my own game I didn´t even SIP!! Tell me what you did. And the map has a lot of potential for watery activities, so I think it definitely qualifies as a game with the real spirit of the Great Lakes. Hopefully you will find this one as entertaining as I did. Have fun!
Played this one last night. I settled in place. Hiawatha AI usually goes Liberty (sometimes Liberty *and* Tradition) so I decided to give Liberty a try for a change. Then Patronage, Rationalism, and Order. (I also almost never take Order) Before getting very far in the Order tree I switched to Commerce for the cheaper roads, more science, and the happiness from the finisher. Science victory on turn 273.

Pocatello settled a city way too close to me and then built the Great Wall. I declared war anyway and captured that city. I kept it as a puppet even tho' it had no luxuries because it was a lot of land. He offered me his other expo for peace and I took it; it was a good city so I kept it too, but its luxuries were not improved yet and my happiness dipped to -17 for a while, but I got it back under control without too many rebels to deal with. Eventually I annexed both cities.

This was a bizarre map. That's not a bad thing, just an observation. I was able to explore the oceans by having open borders with Polynesia and slipping some caravels out through a canal city. And later I sent a submarine through the ice to the southwest to finish exploring.

OECG#93 In the Spirit of the Great Lakes

This time we play as the Iroquois on a standard sized Pangaea map.
That was an interesting Pangea. I settled four cities around the lake, and fed my capital with boats. Peaceful game until I got fed up with Prophet spam from both the Aztecs and Polynesia and declared war on both. I took two Aztec cities and was given Samoa in a peace deal, which I mainly wanted so I could build a canal city between France and Polynesia. I didn't use it for anything, but it needed to be built.

Victory in the end game on 221 with a race between Diplomatic and Science victories. Diplomatic won out by less than half a dozen turns.

I played the Iroquois one again, this time going straight Liberty into Patronage, and I prioritized Temple of Artemis, Sistine Chapel, and Forbidden Palace. (got them all, and plenty of other wonders too) I settled about 6 or 7 cities, captured a few, and then settled a few more even into the Atomic era. Got a science victory much earlier this time; I think I had just started researching Future Tech I finished the whole tech tree except for Nuclear Fusion and Future Tech when the last spaceship part was built in 1950. I put all the guilds in my capital, and I fed it with multiple food caravans (it wasn't coastal) so it could work all the specialists. I thought about putting the guilds in a coastal city so I could use a cargo ship for food but I don't think any of them had fresh water for a garden.

OECG#94 The Great American Frontier

I couldn't think of a clever title. This was just a fun game that I played recently. We play as Washington on a standard-sized random frontier map, hence the name (might be Pangaea, might be continents.) Quick pace, raging barbs, classical era start. The difficulty is Emperor. The starting location is so good you could probably play it as one city challenge. I played a science game but beelined Internet and got a culture victory while I was building spaceship parts.

OECG#94a The Great American Frontier OCC

Here's the above game with One City Challenge turned on (using https://bmaupin.github.io/civ5save-editor/)
I played this yesterday. Was surprised when I captured my first city and it didn't go *poof*. (not sure if your civsave file doesn't have OCC checked, or if I downloaded the wrong one) I used the save-editor you linked to change one of my recent autosave files and reloaded that and the cities vanished like they should (Surabaya and Jakarta.) Oddly enough, Indonesia rebuilt Jakarta and the victory board gave them credit for having their original capital, even tho' Medan was the capital now. So I guess if you're trying to OCC a domination game you need to totally eliminate all but the last AI. At least Jakarta was no longer a holy city and Stonehenge was gone. They never fully recovered from that and I'm surprised Poland didn't take them out.

Eventually I got a science victory. OCC slows down your science more than I expected. I did Tradition, Patronage, Rationalism, Commerce, and Freedom. When I launched, I was about 11 turns away from a culture victory. (I won the Worlds Fair easily, but when it was time for the International Games there was no way I could beat Monty so I never proposed it and if someone else had I would have voted against it) I took Media Culture instead of Space Procurement so I built all the parts instead of buying a couple.

OECG#95: The salty Christmas spirit

Hi there. This time around we are going to play as Poland on a Pangaea map with standard size&pace. The level is Emperor. Go in any direction but one task you will have to fulfil regardless: Salt needs to be banned through the World Congress. You have nice lands, restless neighbours and a nice amount of CSs nearby. Make sure to scout early on, because the land mass is fairly "snakey".

OECG#94 The Great American Frontier
Finished this one, SV T275, playing as an OCC without the setting turned on. The AI didn't bother me all game. Guess it was a combo of me only having one city so they didn't get mad at my expansion and being #1 in science, thus military almost the whole game. I was running with the "too many units to support" most of the time thanks to gifts from the military CS. I even got gifted a Great Admiral but had no coastal city to give him a navy to command lol. (He's hanging out by my ally Lhasa in the screenshot.)

I had a ton of money, a ton of faith to buy a bunch of Great People and maybe the most culture for the most policies I've ever had. I finished Tradition, Patronage, Aesthetics, Rationalism and most of Commerce. Also, got 9 in Freedom. (Not really sure where all that culture came from). A fun game!

OECG#96 Something Fishy about the Incas.

Emperor difficulty, standard size, a Great Plains start, and you begin next to a nice big puddle. There's room round this sea for several cities, giving you nice safe trade routes. And in the middle of the sea is a surprise: The Great Barrier Reef. You'll even find a spot suitable for Petra. Go wild. Generate cash to buy the UN, turtle to a Science Victory, or use the start to take out all your enemies. And your friends. Enjoy!

This was a hard one for some reason! First play-through, I went Liberty and settled about 5 or 6 cities. Gave up in the atomic era; I was behind and the AIs were declaring war on me constantly, 2 at a time.

Tried it again. Tradition 4-city, the fourth one kinda late but it had plenty of food and I sent it trade routes so it caught up quickly. I might should have settled one more to the east by the wine. I started building settlers as soon as I hit 2 pop, and still had to declare war on Portugal and sacrificed a scout to keep her from settling GBR before I could get to it. (I lost a scout, she lost a settler, 2 warriors, and maybe a worker I don't remember. But that didn't set her back nearly as much as I expected) Things were going okay until mid-game when Portugal backstabbed me and declared war; while I was dealing with that (effectively, but slowly) the others pushed-through Autocracy as the world ideology, embargoed the city states, and embargoed me (Maria proposed that one.) Because I had no oil, I beelined Ballistics and then Stealth, but I probably could have defeated her with just rocket artillery, bazookas, and SAMs. By then I did have a *little* bit of oil for a battleship, a bomber, and a couple of tanks. Eventually I took 3 of her cities including Lisbon. After that I pretty much coasted to a rather late science victory. Even without any external trade routes, my GPT was pretty good. I bought 2 of the space ship parts, and could have won 4 turns earlier by buying the last one instead of waiting for it to finish building in Ollantaytambo

Look how many cities Shaka has in the mini-map, LOL:

OEGC#97 Venice

Folks on the Steam Community forums were complaining about how Venice sucks, and it prompted me play a few games as Enrico. He's a lot of fun when you realize all that gold can be used as a weapon. Play aggressive or passive-aggressive; they both work. Playing nice probably won't work. Here's one that I thought was a lot of fun. It's a small Small Continents Plus map and quick pace. Raging barbarians. Emperor level. It's a good location in spite of the tundra. All victory conditions are enabled; you can go for any victory you like except diplomatic. I was going for a science victory but ended up with a culture win just a few turns before finishing the rocketship.

After I win, I like to Just One More Turn and conquer the world. I should try domination victory...

OEGC#97 Venice
I'm going to try this one after the current GotM. Venice can be interesting to play; would much rather play as Venice then have Enrico in my game as an opponent. I've never taken Dance of the Aurora pantheon before because its just pretty bad but this might be one case where it will work. Four tundra hills in view plus the luxury and if that deer is on tundra that'll be nice. SiP is really the only option here so no question about that.

Spoiler I don't think this is a spoiler, but just in case... :

SiP is good, but also take a look at the coastal hill next to the lake. Both salt tiles and the furs are still in range. Settling on a hill is always good for the extra defense and the extra hammer, as long as you have enough food. But you'll be giving up a watermill and eventually a hydroelectric plant.

Dance of the Aurora is good here, or take God-King and build Stonehenge. There are several good options (especially if someone beats you to the pantheon you want) Have fun!

OECG#98 Hmm, what was the map template again?

Welcome to a fun game with a slightly unusual map. We are playing as Korea on a Large sized Continents map with Standard speed. The level is Immortal. Go for any peaceful victory condition. What could possibly go wrong? Find your way and don´t lose focus. Everything will be all right... eventually. Enjoy!

Thanks. I wasn't sure this discussion was still alive. I've started it; in the modern era and still haven't really explored much. I really should send a privateer out and about... So far it's going okay towards no particular victory condition; maybe science but I've only caught up to the middle of the pack at this point. Don't have a single wonder yet, (I've only attempted a couple) but hopefully I'll get Eiffel and Statue of Liberty.
