Hello
This is my first post here, but i've been lurking for a few months now.
Anyway, I've been working on a Pacific Islands Mod with Civs from 4000BC to c.1500AD.
I've only come up with 8 civs so far:

------------------------------

China- As in game

------------------------------

Japan- As in game

------------------------------

Aztec- As in game

------------------------------

Australian Aborginals-
UU- Tracker, Replaces Scout?, Don't know about stats yet.
Expasionistic/Religion
Cities Based on Tribal Names
Leader- ?

------------------------------

Maori-
UU- ?
Militaristic/Religion
Cities Based on Tribal Names
Leader- ?

------------------------------

Inca-
? for everything

------------------------------

Mayans-
UU- Plumed Archer, Replaces Longbowman, 4/2/1
Religion/Comercial?
Cities- ?
Leader- ?

------------------------------

Inuet-
?

------------------------------

Any help I could get for the civs, other Rule Edits (Improvements, Pacific Specific Wonders, Recources, ect.), The Map, ect would be apreciated.

Thanks

don't know why you would have the Incas, Myans, and Aztecs in a Pacific mod, unless you you go along the lines that they are in fact on the pacific coast, or close to it.

I would suggest throwing in the Polynisians (pardon the spelling), or you may wish to break them up into different groups like the Hawiians, Somoans, ect. with a uu of being a galley that can sail on the ocean tiles.

The Koreans could also be included, as wells as the Aluets.

If you want different resources, can not forget the coconuts as a luxury.

I would suggest Maui as leader of the Maori civ.

As for the unique unit, the Maori invented trench warfare and gave the British a quick lesson in how effective it can be, so should be defensive. Common weapons were greenstone (jade) clubs and spears. My Maori isn't up to giving you a name for them though. The other possibility, considering the navigation skills of the Maori, would be a double hulled, ocean going canoe (Waka).

Resources should include;

Greenstone
Obsidian
Pigs
Taro
Coconuts

Hope some of this is helpful.

Being a Kiwi, i know some stuff about the Maori, and was considering the Maori as a civ for my mod. Here's some info based on above messages

>> Militaristic/Religion

I'd say Expansionist/Religious might be a better idea, seing as all the Maori settlers emigrated from what they called Havaiki, which today's name is unknown, some people suggest Rarotonga.

>> Cities Based on Tribal Names

This can be a good idea. I mean, the Aztecs civ in the game had the city names of other Mesoamerican tribes, many of them not allied with the Aztecs. Heck, the Tlaxcala allied with the Spaniards against the Aztecs, yet Tlaxcala is used as a name. However, I was toying with the idea of Waitangi as the capital, and other names for other cities such as Tauranga (where i currently live)

>> I would suggest Maui as leader of the Maori civ.

Maui was a legendary figure. Whether he existed or not, it's dunno. The legend of Maui is prolly based on a real person, but just like how King Arthur was probably based off a Celtic tribal chief, most of the stories are probably untrue. I would have chosen Hone Heke as the leader, he was a very influential leader with the Treaty of Waitangi.

>> Common weapons were greenstone (jade) clubs and spears

One of the most common Maori war clubs is the Paru. The Paru were not just a club, but also had some spiritual sense of personality for its owner, as if it was an extension of themselves. This might be a good idea for a UU

>> a double hulled, ocean going canoe (Waka).

Other polynesian tribes have vessals called Waka, most of them double-hulled. The Maori Waka used when Cook arrived at New Zealand were single-hulled war canoes. I would've chosen this as my UU

>> As for the unique unit, the Maori invented trench warfare and gave the British a quick lesson in how effective it can be, so should be defensive

Absouletely. I can see a Paru unit having a defense focus. However i'd see a Waka as having a movement focus

>> Resources should include; (etc)

Here's a suggestion - Kumara! Kumara are a kind of sweet potato imported to NZ by the original Maori settlers of NZ. They also taste great when roasted alongside roast potatoes :=)

Also, two unmentioned things that i will mention

Civ Name : I'd suggest calling the civ Aoteroa. That's one of the Maori names for NZ, in fact, the official name for NZ is actually Aoteroa New Zealand

Colour: Black is pretty much the NZ national colour, eg 'All Blacks'. However, dark red (such as the unique colour for Japan in the default civ3mod.bic) would probably be more suitable

Hope this info helps out :=)

I think the Incas and Mayans would be great for this mod. Same with the Polynesians and Somoans. The races should be as mixed as possible.

Sounds like a great mod! I'm also going to be playing it when it's finished. I've wanted to play as the Mayans in Civ3 since it came out, actually. Your choice for the Plumed Archer UU is perfect, stats and all.

Ok, if there is some intrest, I might actualy get some serios (sp)work done. I was thinking of adding the dutch and english, who were very influential in the more modern era of the pacific.
What do u think?
I'll post a very basic .bic tonight, mainly the name changes, as I am shocking with graphics. (Any help would be welcome)

Irs a good idea to include English and Dutch, but where would they start?

Also, why not add Australians, Indonesians, Thais/Siamese/Khmers, and New Guineans as well to get a better balance (that is without a huge void in South East Asia)

OK, Heres an update on the project

CIVS
1. Japan
2. China
3. Korea
4. Aztecs
5. Maya
6. Inca
7. Koori (Australian Aboriginals)
8. Maori
9. Inuet
10. Polynesians
11. Indonesians
12. English? (could start in Sydney)
13. Dutch? (don’t know where)
14. Spanish? (Brazil?)

And we still need two more!
I’m taking the Kiwi advice for the Maori in regards to leaders and the Waka, still need help with the rest

MAP
Starting from Western China finishing somewhere in the Carabeian (sp) I need someone to design this.

GRAPHICS
Need Leader Heads, UU’s, City graphics and Resource pics

I think that’s all, as always, tell me what you think!

You could have the spanish starting in california or the phillipenes (sp.) and the portuguese in brazil.

and maybe you could put in the vietnamese

sorry, posted twice... see the next post...

Since a Scenario editor is coming out soon, you could have the European and other "alien" civs settler and worker start in a Galley and have to find a place to settle. The advantage for "aliens" would be having a Galley right away, and the advantage for natives would be an earlier start. Just a thought.

Sween32: Problem is it won't be much of a start cos the AI will unload the galley right away :( And being a galley it would sink if it was placed out to sea if the player tried one of the civs. But the AI will be able o not sink though :D

Gidday I'm New Here and i Just bought the game recently YAY!! Enjoying Very Much... I've Been hunting For Some Pacific Island and Austrailian Mods Since.

So Kudos For Coming Up with This idea.
i tried out the CIV GOLD mod Especially For Aus and Nz But it Seems to be Far too Big..

..About the maori idea i seem to Know a bit... Being a Maori so i'll Put My Two Cents Here

UU- Sounds on the track of what the other Guys say It should be out of, The Single Hulled canoe Aka. Waka, KaiTaiaha- Which could Be unique Spearmen or KaiPatu- Which Are Unique Clubmen
Leader- There Are many Notable Maori Leaders and To Be Honest i don't really get a Feel For Hone Heke. My Suggestions are: Kupe- Ledgendary MoriOri Who Discovered New Zealand,
Otane- East Coast Cheif Who Was Said to Be 8ft Tall and also is a Presence In Mau Taiaha(Maori Martial Art style),
Te Kooti- My Tangata And Founder Of The Ringatu Bible Religion He and His Followers were a Threat to The Colonial Government in the Late 1860's and he is a Landmark in Maori Guerilla Warfare, Hit and Run Tactics and Intellegence
More info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Te_Kooti

Well thats it My Two Cents, so Kia Kaha And all of the luck For Your Mod. Peace
