African traditional religions are often described as not unlike traditional religions in most cultures. Often, God is worshiped through consultation or communion with lesser deities and ancestral spirits. The will of God is sought by the believer also through consultation of oracular deities, or divination. There is a belief in a cyclical nature of reality. The living stand between their ancestors and the unborn.

Dogon cosmology begins with Amma, who is known as the "only" god, Before the present cosmos, Amma made an attempt at creation, but it was impotent - he was only able to salvage the four elements of fire, water, air and earth, which find in our current universe. Amma's second attempt was the creation of the cosmic egg - we know that the egg is a popular symbol for creation.

The Ashanti people of Ghana in West Africa believed in a supreme being called Nyame, whose sons were lesser gods. Each son served a different purpose: one was a rainmaker, another the sunshine (etc.) Worship of Nyame was the exclusive preserve of the king through his priests; lesser people worshiped her sons.

Literal meaning: 'owner'. The head of the Yoruban pantheon, which contains 1,700 divinities. He is Olofin-Orun, 'lord of heaven'; also he is Olodumare, 'almighty' and 'supreme'. To the Yoruba of Nigeria, this sky god is the discerner of hearts-'he who sees the inside and the outside of man'. Active in celestial and terrestrial affairs, Olorun is able to do all things; he is the enabler of all who achieve any ends. No one has ever seen this 'king who cannot be found by searching', yet as Olodumare he is omnipresent: a mighty, eternal rock, forever constant and reliable.
