I'm not religious, I don't believe that Jesus was the Son of God, but by all accounts, this is one hell of a movie. I certainly plan on seeing it.

Is the power of the story of Jesus lessened if it never actually happened?

It wouldnt matter, a good story is a good story. But Jesus did exist and probably was crucified. There are lessons to be learned from the story even if you dont believe he was divine.

The story of Jesus should not be confused with the revisionist lunacy of the Gibson family, however.

Whether Jesus actually walked arounf or not,
Whether he had a divine father or not,

His story influences many people today!

You've seen the movie? Or are you just pre-emptively negative about it?

Are you talking about Jesus Christ Superstar, jpow?

Which is second only to "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" in great Donny Osmond performances!!

Are the British evil in this film too?

Jesus Christ Superstar, wow, that brings back memories! Remember Godspell?

As far as I know, the British weren't the primary antagonists of Jesus.

Hey, that was very good. Saw the revival a couple years ago in the Theatre District.

But on topic, haven't seen the movie. I don't know much about what it is, other than a bunch of shouting from both sides over it.

I believe the story of Jesus can influence people whether they believe in him or not.

Bigotry at its finest!

If you don't agree with the views of the "Gibson Family" don't see the movie. There is no reason to put them down.

Additionally, be the story true or untrue, the idea remains the same. One could only benefit from listening and being skeptical.

I'm really looking forward to it. I'll pass judgement after I see it, but I've read enough opinions from different people that I expect it to be very good.

They might have slightly altered the story :)
Hey, they changed the ending of LOTR (apparently)

Anyway, I think that when you are making a religious movie and the guy playing jesus gets struck by lightning, you might be doing something wrong...

we'll see.

Yeah, I heard about that. Quite the unfortunate coincidence. I doubt even the most staunchly faithless could have gone about their daily on-set duties with the same attitude after that.

Maybe he'll play Darwin in his next film to balance it out. :p

We watched both in 8th grade religion. The first Jesus Christ Superstar was good; the modern remake was terrible. Godspell was good, but crazy.

Oh, and I'm mildly interested in the Gibson movie, but I find religious movies always end up being a little trite...

Isn't this the movie where the guy playing Jesus got struck by lightning on the set? Twice?

Well, the guy is hanging on a very large object on a hill devoid of trees. And they probably filmed it when there was a storm to get the right "mood".
