Since C3C doesn't have v1.29 vanilla installed, I wonder if there is a work-around.

I have 1.29 installed on one computer, but my laptop does not. The only way to transfer something from one computer to another is using a floppy (so obviously a patch wouldn't fit). Is there anything I can do to make the game work correctly on my laptop?

Here's an idea you might try and mods please edit if it's an inappropriate suggestion.

I won't mention the names, but you could use file share software, put the patch in the shared folder of your base computer and just download it via the software on your laptop.

If you're on a broadband network, I believe you can accomplish this without the file share software. You could also just upload the file if there are any storage spaces on the net that are cost-effective for just this one transfer.

Errr. wait... maybe I don't understand your question. Why don't you just download the 1.29 patch?

... and obviously no network connection either?

If your laptop doesn't have an internet or network connection, you might want to split the Civ3 1.29F patch installation executable into small parts (big enough to fit on a floppy) and then transfer it to your laptop using some floppies.

A freeware tool I use for this purpose is WinSplit, as attached hereto. It's a small Windows program that will split files into floppy size or any other size you want, and gives you a small batch file to glue it together without hassles.

Thanks, although I'm not sure if Win Split would fit on a floppy either. ;)

Actually, what I really want to know is the exact problems having an unpatched Civ3 would cause.

Problems with .wav files (unit sounds), for one thing. It will cause the game to crash. I suppose you could manually go in and change the file names (I believe there was an extra space in some of them, like saying ._wav instead of .wav). I don't know what other problems there may be though.

If you had looked at the ZIP, you'd have seen that WinSplit is a tiny program of about 75KB (after unzipping) and you only need to use the utility on your PC anyway, and not on the laptop. It's trivially easy. Send a PM if you are in doubt.

And as indicated, playing C3C with an unpatched Civ3 may cause some documented crashes.

Another option would simply burning the patch onto a CD. A bit wasteful, but simple.

Just use a rewriteable one. Or an USB stick.

OK, I'll try it out today :)
