Patching v1.0i to v4.0 on Win XP

I have SMAC v1.0i and it works great on my operating system (XP home). I downloaded SMAC patch v4.0 from Firaxis. When I finally got the patch installed in my A.C. directory, I got a message "does not your support your CPU" on start up. I then downloaded the Win2000/XP patch and installed it in the same directory.

On start: same message:

YOUR CPU NOT SUPPORTED
You may continue but crashes may result. Do you wish to continue?

Any answer I give (yes/no/close) results in aborting the game load.

Has anyone seen this before? Can anyone help?

Ive experienced that problem and I ignore it and everything works fine from then on. I do recall that I had to modify a configuration file. Don't know if it is
related.

I did a quick google search and this is what I found:
If you get a crash and/or the message "CPU not supported":

- check if your monitor settings are 16 bit High Color
- change in Alpha centauri.ini the line ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=0 to 1 (or twisted)
- load Alpha Centauri (SMAC) or Alien Crossfire (SMACX) direct by click on the respective exe (terran.exe / terranx.exe)

bladester:
Thanks I will give it a try.

edit: I changed the Alpha Centauri.ini file entry
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithum=0 to 1 and it allowed me to load the game. So, I think that fixes my problem. Thanks Again!

BTW I've marked that website in case I have to go there again.

No problemo.

Enjoy crushing those darn [insert most hated faction here] ;).

That one is doumented in the read me files (paper or disk) with the game. Note also that with SOME systems you will still get the "cpu not supported message" after you change or add the ForceOldVoxelAlgorithum=1 line, but if you just click 'ok' on the cpu error message, the game will load anyway.

Usually, yes. From time to time though, it crashes, or more precisely it won't start. But nothing you can't handle if you restart the computer

:thanx: [dance] [party] :) I thank You Ive been trying to get it to work for over 6 months

Perhaps this should be put in a FAQ or make this thread sticky since so many people have been having the same problem?

It's good to see this level of interest in game as old as SMAC. It shows that a great game never gets old :).

Okay Ive got a problem. It finnaly doesnt cause the game to abort te game at the start, but now the game constantly crashing. I did everything you said to do but it still crashes

I don't know about the crashing but do you get an error message and what is it?

Also, you could try setting the compatibility mode for the game to win95 and see if that helps.

This is all it says.
terran.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience
I have tried setting the compatibility to every one. It didnt help, Restrated a bunch of times doesnt help. I have folowed al the Instuctions. Someone please help, I don't want to have to buy an old computer.

Try removing the game and reinstalling. Then edit the configuration file
and see if it works. If it doesn't try each patch separately.
