Sometimes, I see a pleased AI with a huge army roaming near my borders and WHEOOH. I have used 2 cheap tricks so far to avoid war:

1/ Begging for 1 gold to buy 10 turns of peace; and
2/ Signing a DP with the AI (some AIs are willing to sign DP at pleased).

My question is...

Is it true that an AI will never declare war on me (assume the war is not initiated by an AP vote) if it has a DP with me?

Thanks.

I've had Catherine the Crazy . .. .. .. .. . declare war on me with a DP when she was Friendly +22/-0 Mood.

Edit: Also I should add that Cath had the exact same army size as me and I was her only friend on the map, and we had about 3 resource trades that were keeping all her cities from decending into anarchy.

the whole thing depends on the power level. if you are much stronger even if the civie hates your gut answer is no, they probably won't declare. You can on friendly and if you are weak they will declare war on you.

This is not a trick. It doesn't help you.

^ I assume the above would help in limited situations where:

- the diplo boost for having a DP puts you above the attitude threshold for DOW with that leader (say, puts you to 'Friendly' with a leader who will not DOW at friendly)

?

No. The diplo bonus only kicks in after 20+ turns and regardless, once an AI has begun planning a war against you their attitude afterwards is irrelevant.

It does not work. Part of the reason is the AI's stupidity to not know what is going on.

An AI who refuses to attack player BIG, for being too BIG or too strong... will gladly attack him if you sign a defense pact with player BIG. This is because he has no problems attacking YOU, despite this means attacking the guy who is too advanced.

It sounds stupid, because it is. The AI is just TOO stupid to know what is going on. The guys at firaxis seem to have not bothered adding in any common sense to what is going on relationwise. This is an AWSOME exploit though. I love goading an AI into attacking me and forcing a much larger guy to attack him in the process.

Now, back in Civ III it was different when you made a pact, you made a pact and couldn't break it for what.. 20 turns? Also the AI was much smarter there. I still remember when an aggresive AI sneaked an entire gigantic stack all the way down to my part of the world. I suddenly saw it right at my border about to DoW on me. So I made def pacts with the rest of the world.

Next turn, the AI realized my own trick I had done, and instead of trying to commit suicide in a futile attempt, he silently waltzed his army all the way back home.
