Peacetime Military

Just curious to know, for those who are playing for one of the non-miltary victories, what size military is good to keep when yer not fighting a war?

I've been keeping mine around the cost of about 25% of my total income. That's pretty hard to maintain, especially when I'm trying to build city improvements/ wonders, but it seems to me that's the minimum I need to keep handy in case some not-particularly-nice AI civ decides to attack me.

Any thoughts?

I don't think maintaining army should be a big problem. Trade with other civs, and you should have more than enough income for your army.

Also, chech how much income you've devoted to science research. In my experiences, beginning for later industrial ages, you don't need to devote all your income to sciences because you can't discover an advance in less than 4 turns. I usually can save $1000 in 4 turns in modern age.
