Pericles the Culture Nut

I think Pawelo set up my turnset quite well. Cottage up, and Build, make a few cities as well.
Turn 1: Tokugawa converts to Judaism??? Great spy born in Portugal,
6p7dbog.png
Good enough. Hate having Chariots pillage villages.
Turn 2: Joao uses the GSpy for a Golden Age.
6jb9gs7.png
Maybe a mistake, but i would like to see who the last civ is. Sign OP with Surya and gift him Literature to make him happy.
Turn 3: Churchill has optics, luckily he's the only one who will give away his world map. So whatever he discovers, we'll know about it.
Turn 4: Surya offers this deal:
822xvm0.png
I acccept. We need the happiness anyway.
82locu8.png
Free Exp and City :)
Turn 5:
6ldz4zk.png
Captured.
Turn 6: Borders of Athens expands. A resalution to open borders with all members suceeds forcing us to have op with toku and also
6tw3bcw.png
Is settled.
Turn 7: Toku adopts pacifism, Whip the Notre Dam We still have a Great Prophet in Athens. We can A: Bulb Printing Press, B: Settle, C: Start a golden age. I'll let the group decide. Myceania the aggresive city is loosing tiles to Leira.
Turn 8: Islam spreads to Assyria. Notre Dam built. Things are going fine.
Turn 9: Joao Cancels Banana - Rice deal.
Turn 10: Churchill also Cancels Gold- Fish trade.
Turn 11: First turn where nothing happens :P
Turn 12: Liberalism in. To bad nothing good is available. I get Nationalism. Moose Herds near Assyrian grew large and extra food is given to Assyria.
8287bs0.png
This will get surya to do something instead of bother us. Spiral minerate is as good as ours so i'm not to afraid of giving away divine right.
Turn 13:
86rruk1.png

ROFL The text + His pose is hilarious. I'm putting this image in the civ 4 funniest screens topic! I start the Taj in Athens, and Bibactre should do the hermitage.
72u2iw8.png
settled. A nearby chop makes the Spiral Minerete close enough to whip for only 3 pop in corinth.
Turn 14: Great Scientist born in Corinth.
Turn 15: Slave revolt in athens.

Don't worry about out gold situation, it's for 1 turn as we have a slave revolt.
What do we do with the Great scientist and Great Prophet? (we also have a great general in Byzantium)
Why is sparta still more cultured then Bibactre? I have no clue. I just built units and a few buildings in Sparta.
Buildin taj in Athens and Hermitage in Bibactre.
Where are we putting our national wonders? In particular Moai Statues, Globe Theatre and Heroic Epic.
We should change our civics. We're still in despotism.!
And don't chop the forest near Pharsalos. It looks like the best candidate for national Park.

I think Qing might be going for culture to?

Nice one TLO, though I'm not the greates fan of getting the biggest civ to war on the small Surya - once he crashes it, China will be huge...

Anyway here are some suggestions about the GP :
- GSci - I would settle an Academy in Biberacte for extra +4 :culture: and research
- GProph - I would start a GA to do a double GA with the upcoming Taj - I just love doing this
- GGen - Military Academy in Byzantium

As for me, HE and Moais could go to Byzantium. Coupled with the Mil Aca it would make a military monster. Globe - no clues. One of the legendary could benefit it - +4 :culture: is still nice.

Sparta has more culture due to the early confu shrine.

What is weird is the Macao culture score - was it bombed ???

I love the culture map - biggest question where the ?@%# is Japan ??? ;)

Yes but Surya is alot more stronger then Qin. Surya has been making troops like heck since he declared on us. If anything, i think qin might lose some of his border cities.

Japan i believe is on an island nearby Surya. If you look you can see a small land of the shore of the Khmer. It is close enough for Churchill to bring in jewish missionaries to spread Judaism. (and no, Churchill still doesn't have the Temple of Soloman in London)

What about the National Park in Pharsalos idea?

I should have checked the power  - good idea then. Hope you were right on Surya.

NP in Pharsalos is great - it will be a huge GArt farm once it gets going :goodjob:

sorry to tell everyone so late but please skip me for a while (too drunk now, out of town later)

looking at save: 1.crabs+fur city in north
2. give rice from Byzantium to Mycenae, work ocean in Byzantium
3. more workers

gl

Nice game you guys got going. I didn't see it mentioned earlier, so, you know that Sury/Toku declaring war on you was a bug right? Toku occupied the dead Boudicca's spot and she was at war with you- same with Bibactre being quite Japanese- because you took it from the Celts.

@Quotey

Do you like to join ? We have some players MIA and would like a helping hand.
Welcome and go on for 15 turns if you wish :)

Thanks for your feedback on Toku - his culture seems to push heavy on former Celtia.

@Trieste

Don't worry :) Hope you have recovered since!

Quotey if you would like to join then that's great. Since Trieste can't play, i think it'd be great for you to go up.

I was wondering why there was so much of Toku's culture there- weird. Go for it Quotey!

Thanks pawelo, I'm good now but still have to finish preparing for this trip and it's taking up a lot all of my time. I should be home in a bit over a week, so if the game is still going then (and at this rate it will be :p ) I'll be back. Good luck though! :goodjob:

I usually play on Noble, but what the hell, if you're missing folks, why not. It's 15 turns. (But guess what? Exams for me. Don't worry, I'll be able to play turns.)

IHT

I start by switching Bibracte's worked tiles- from a 2/2/0 cottage to a 0/1/2 forested hill. This cuts down the completion time on the hermitage by 2 turns, and loses us 2 gold. It grows next turn anyway.

civ4screenshot0000qn7.jpg

And bloody hell, Joao is MURDERING us powoer wise.

civ4screenshot0001pi3.jpg

Joao's worst enemy is probably Toku (can an AI have worst enemies at cautious?) And noone hates him. I trade Spices and Rice to him for 10GPT. I really don't want to run out of cash halfway, and who knows? Maybe he'll become friendly- I'm pretty sure +4 is the max for resources.

Turn 1 (301): Machiavelli gives us some very unexpected news:

civ4screenshot0002ja7.jpg

Sury is researching Nationalism. 25 turns, I'm not sure if Qin will beat him up. Probably.

Sparta completes its Uni, set to Monastery for extra research.

Knossos finishes courthouse, set to Crossbowman, I'm afraid of Joao and friends.

Bibracte's pop means we are gaining 4GPT at 60%, 1 turn before printing press. I send a worker to Byzantium and another to mine some Copper that we can trade to Joao. Copper is useless now, Iron and Gunpowder are the hip things. I spot a barb axemen, but he isn't shifting. There is a WE nearby anyway.

Turn 2 (302)

Printing Press comes in, we jump to +11 per turn then drop to +5. I'm going to blame the city gubbberner here. But I really can't see many improvements to make. Wierd.

Qin offers Fish for Iron. I decline. Sparta could use it, but I do not want to give Qin a strat. resource.

I'm left with the choice of Guilds (For banking), Gunpowder (for Musketmen) or Constitution for Demo and the SoL, and Emancipitation. Constitution comes in 11.

Sparta was queued for Research, I never changed that.

Byzantium goes Longbow -> Crossbow. Vienne goes Uni -> Cross.

Mycenae is getting murdered by Portuguese culture :(

I send a worker to Sparta to build a cottage because he has nothing else to do :/

Turn 3 (303):

Set Corinth to Bhud Monastery after Uni.

Athens grows, Taj down to 16 turns. Buggery, I realised we won't be in a GA for a awitch to Emanc. Them's the breaks. Unless we burn the Prophet on a GA? There's no discussion on him or the scientist so I left them.

I look at the previous report and see that the reason we were losing Gold was because of a Slave Revolt. But we would be losing 5PT without Joao's cash so it's nice to have.

Turn 4 (304):

Joao has been spying on us. Naughty naughty. Nothing else.

Turn 5 (305):

I realise we can build Oxford U- I stop because I am tired as hell, want to know what to do with the GP and GS, AND want to know whether Oxford U is to be built in Corinthe or not. Hopefully you're okay with the set, if you didn't like it please replay them, I am fine with lurking.

Replay your set? Sounds better then mine! Remember, a good report is more important then sloppy play. continue the remaining ten turns later. I understand, it get's really tiering to play SG's in the more modern times.

@Quotey

Great report :goodjob:

Can't wait to see the remaining 10 turns :scan:

As for the GA, I propose burning the GProphet 8 turns before Taj, to double GA.

The scientist should land an academy in one of the legendaries - not only it boosts the research but it lands us +4 :culture: per turn. If they all have academies, we can still keep him to bulb something (I don't know what is the next thing on the road).

Joao's power has, since the beginning, been much more impressive that ours - we have to keep him pleased and scan the border. Maybe we should spy on him more ?

Righty-ho then.

Without a GA, Demo would take 17 (inc. Constitution). Taj will take 14, so we CAN revolt to Emanc (if we're going to) in the GA. I'll save the Prophet for a GA anyway.

Sorry for not making an academy with the scientist- I forgot about +4 culture. He'll dawdle off to Bibracte.

I'm not sure where to place Oxford, but Corinth can make some Cathedrals now- get on it!

Turn 6 (306)

Cross -> Bhud Temple in Vienne for a Shrine (Corinth needs one)- only 1.3 so far.

Kill that barb Axemen lingering about. There Were workers near.

Speaking of workers, I know you want to build more, but there aren't many cities that need improving, relly.

Turn 7 (307)

civ4screenshot0003go5.jpg

Byzantium Cross -> Cross

GS builds the Academy in Bibracte.

Turn 8 (308)

Argos Forge -> Uni-- I am pretty sure Argos is a commerce city- Why were we building a Forge in it?

Knossos Cross -> Cross.

Both Qin and Surya get a GG

And WOW, Churchill builds the Temple of Solomon. He must be RAKING it in.

I realise we want Grocers for Sparta, but Joao wants NAitonalism for it- no way Joaosé. I'll get it after Const.

Turn 9 (309)

My God, another Spy? That's 3! Joao you naughty boy- we even lost Demographics on him :/ It might not have been him, but I suspect it.

Sparta Cross -> Cross

civ4screenshot0004fx4.jpg

I stop to think about this for quite a bit. But what does Divine Right do? Take a couple of beakers of Nat? I guess Versailles is there, but we don't need it. And I want Grocers. DONE.

civ4screenshot0005og8.jpg

Macau captured by Khmer! Is it worse if Sury or Qin wins? :/ I hope Qin doesn't become a vassal.

Turn 10 (310)

Byzantium Cross -> Cross

Sury cancels our Cow for Dye :( He has Banking.

Vienne Bhud Temple -> give a guess!

Ask worker nicely to irrigate a Farm near some godfosaken city, I'm not alt tabbing to check.

Change from Crossbow -> Grocer in Sparta. I forget things.

Turn 11 (311)

WEE OOO WEEE OOOOOO! Joao has Gunpowdah! Uh oh. :( And banking (who doesn't)

His favourite Civic is Herediatary Rule- mind switch to it in the GA!!!!

Turn 12 (312)

Another Spy, Contitution is in, research Demo (14)

Pharsallos Granary -> Courthouse

Turn 13 (313)

Byzantium Cross -> Cross

Turn 14 (314)

Realise making Crossbows was dumb: Vienne Cross -> Long

Turn 15 (315)

Argos is unhealth, Uni -> Grocer

Nuffin else.

Aussi

GP in Athens in 6. Probably a Great Prophet. Taj in 4, Demo in 10. It works out, and we can switch to HR turn 1 of the GA.

e: Save? What the hell is a save?

Trieste recovering and asking for a skip, and our two MIAs still away, I think it makes me up.

Got it for tomorrow or friday morning :)

Nice turns Quotey, nice to see a new face around!

I got the empire in such a great shape, I didn't know what to put in the pre-turn

I decided to plan a cultural offensive for the three legendaries, focusing on all our religions already in place.

316
CBow@Byzantium – LBow
LBow@Vienne – LBow
Christ spread in Ephesus

317
We get a very nice event in Athens :

318
Christ Cath@Corinth – Jewish Synagogue
Hermitage@Biberacte – Confu Academy

You can see the pattern here - my major concern will be to spread as much as possible to get the temples up and put those cathedrals in our legendaries.

319
Taj-party time!

I start Oxford here. Btw, we should get this city grow better - Athens has loads of unworked cottages - it can be a research monster once all those beuties grow.

LBow@Byzantium – Christ Miss
LBow@Vienne – Confu Miss

Just to make the party last longer, I fire a GP on it to get the nice 20-turns GA. And we need it, Joao is getting very close to us in score. I hope he isn't trying to put up something focused on smashing us with cuirass/trebs.

Will aim the research at Rifling.

320
Trade Banking & 350 gold for Nationalism with Qin.
Trade Fish for Ivory with Qin – he is friendly
Christ Miss@Byzantium – Moais (so late... pangea makes you forget such a basic stuff)
Great Prophet in Athens – sleep waiting for a second one to a new GA ?
I change spy points setting Joao our main target, up spy to 10%.

321
CBow@Sparta – Confu Miss
Confu Miss@Vienne – Buddh Miss

322
Buddh Miss@Vienne – Buddh Miss
Grocer@Argos – Christ Temple
Churchill has circumnavigation – who cares in a pangea
Byzantium is confused, Knossos gets Christ

323
Confu Miss@Sparta – B Temple
CBow@Knossos – Islam Miss
Buddha spreads in Byzantium

324
(IT) Democracy – Rep Parts
Instant revolt to HR, Free Speech and Emancipation
Buddh Miss@Vienne – Confu Temple
Surya lost one major city to Qin - the wind is changing, we should maybe stop this war before Qin gets out of our scope
Argos is confused

325
Surya wants us to cancel deals with Qin - I laugh
Confu Academy@Biberacte – Confu Temple

326
Qin wanted us to attack Toku, still I refused
Buddh Temple@Sparta – Buddh Miss
Moais @ Byzantium – Buddh Temple
Christ Temple@Argos – Confu Temple

327
Toke wants the same as Qin, same answer
Confu Temple@Vienne – Buddh Miss
Confu Temple@Argos – Confu Miss

My decisions are based upon the fact we don't :
A/ want
B/ need
C/ can face
D/ all of the above
war to win culture-wise.
(hint : several answers may apply ;))

328
Oxford@Athens – Islam Miss
Buddh Miss@Sparta – Christ Temple
Jewish Synagogue@Corinth – Buddh Stupa
Buddh Miss@Vienne – Buddh Miss

329
Islam Miss@Athens – Islam Temple
Buddh Temple@Byzantium – Confu Temple
Confu Miss@Argos
Christ Temple@Mycenea – Library to face Joao culture pressure here.
Buddha in Thebes, Argos, Knossos confused
Failed to spread Islam in Sparta

330
(IT) Rep Parts-Gunpowder (GA powered due in 3)
Buddh Miss@Vienne – Heroic Epic
Courthouse@Assyrian – Islam Miss
Lose 71gold to a fire event in Athens – better than to lose the forge

Some screenies to overview the advancements :

And our cities for current culture output :

Three cathedral powered Corinth and Hermitage powered Biberacte have better output then Athens - I would consider next cathedral in our capital.

To do list :
- continue spreading islam
- get every city every temple possible making nine temples per religion a standard
- get every possible cathedral in every legend city
- beeline Rifling to strenghen the border with Joao
- get Joao to friendly - maybe some nice trades ?
- raise Statue of Liberty in Byzantium - for culture against Portugal border and because legendaries have better builds to do. Byzantium has a nice production. Can do it in Vienne too, but I started HE there for border protection once we get Rifling
- after Rifling, beeline Radio, Electricity, Mass Media for Eiffel and the hits
- Oxford in Athens was a lame decision given the under-developped cottages, maybe growing the capital and working everything can improve it, at the cost of some production tiles ?
- another sleeping Great Prophet in Athens. Ideas ?

I think it should go smoothly, providing we keep eyes opened on our both borders ;)

Trieste, can you take the next one ? Otherwise, back to TLO.

Also Trieste if your up, don't forget to ask churchill for a map. His map may have the missing civ in it.

No got it...

Anyway, I've seen on AZ-06 Jolly Roger Trieste asking an indefinite skip.

Given this I would propose to get one more player in and play your turns TLO ;)
