So I ran some benches between the 2 cards and the 1050 looks to be the winner for me. Sheesh, I'm really surprised. I set software on both tests for performance mode.
My humble system is a i7-4770 @ 3.4, 16gb RAM.

1920x1080 ULTRA (2x) | Medium | Minimum
R9 280: 28.703ms | 17.774ms | 15.438ms
GTX 1050: 21.974ms | 13.436ms | 11.233ms
I wonder if there's a setting I'm missing on the Radeon card that it's not competing here? Open to suggestions.
Plus, my system is like 20c-30c cooler, DAYUM!
