I workshopped some ideas for Martin Luther as a Leader, with two Personae:

Martin Luther, Theologian
Ability - The Augsburg Confession

  • Starts each Age with a specific Civic unlocked (Mysticism in Antiquity, Piety in Exploration, Political Theory in the Modern Age)
  • Civ unique civics, theological civics, and ideological civics cost significantly less Culture to research
  • Gain a Cultural attribute and an additional Policy Slot for completing a civ unique civic tree, the theology tree, or an ideology tree
Martin Luther, Reformer
Ability - “Here I Stand. I can do no other.”

  • Gain Influence based on the number of Settlements in any civilization following your Pantheon, Religion, or Ideology, in their respective Ages
  • Rejecting Treaties and Endeavors costs no Influence, and some of the Influence refunded to the initiating Leader instead goes to Luther

I really like these designs. Combining them, starting with Mysticism/Piety/Political Theory, discount on theological and ideological civics, and being able to Reject Treaties and Endeavors for free feels super flavorful for Luther.

That is sick and beautiful at the same time. Great job, king.

Y’all asking for Martin Luther ASAP, meanwhile I’m begging FXS to make religion a more interesting system before they even think about adding religious leaders. Any religious leader released within the current mechanics is a waste of their gameplay potential in my mind.

Religious leaders could be retooled along with religion, just like some base game civs got retooled with each expansion in Civ6 (oh, look, a new new design for England!).

Aside from religion, I can easily see Luther contributing to science/culture yields and paths, ie through his emphasis on literacy, education and language/identity.

More of personal gripe/preference, but from the design’s standpoint I’d find the need for retooling kind of annoying, and something that will add up over time.

Just get one solid design/concept using what you know is coming up in the expansion.

For the record, I am dearly hoping religion gets overhauled, though I'm not counting on it. :(

I think religion will get overhauled. They put it on the backburner, I think, to focus so heavily on the new mechanics. I am graceful if that's the case, which I suspect it is. Religion has been too much of an important mechanic in Civ 4-6 that I can't imagine FXS leaving religion in the state it's in for 7. Having said that, I think the religion mechanics in 7 look good, if bare bones. I am hopeful they will make it even better than before.

I'm not so sure because this is basically a stripped down version of what appeared in Civ5 and Civ6, which suggests Ed seems to think this is what a "good" religion system looks like. For me, any satisfying religion system would have to be a thorough overhaul, starting in the Antiquity age and removing the "one religion per player" feature, which would mean retooling the Exploration Age Culture Legacy. I think if I expect such a thing outside of mods, I'll only be disappointed.

I'm agree. This is right! Martin Luther King AND JFK!
