Once there was a little old Ram
Thought he could build a whole bunch of Dam
Everyone knows a Ram
Can't
Build a Whole Bunch of Dams

But he's got . . .
High Hopes

he's got . . .
High Hopes

He's got
High apple-pie-in-the-sky hopes!

So anytime you're feeling low
Instead of letting go
Just remember that Ram!

Oops we built another hydroplant-
Oops we built another hydroplant-

Oops we built another hydroplant dam!

Soooo....how's everybody been?

In all seriousness, I hope you all guys have come through the past five or ten years relatively well enough, and hope to see lots of old friends stop by, and maybe make new ones :)

Leader: Ramesses
Difficulty: Monarch
Map: Oasis
Size: Standard
Turns: Standard
Victory: Any and all
Variants:
All cities must be founded on rivers.
All cities need a hydroelectric plant.
and, we didn't discuss this, but after my impromptu song, i think we also have to construct the Hoover Dam of course.

Players:
pholkhero
ozbenno

Well dam, you did start this thing up! I didn't realise though that this was a re-enactment of Refrains of the Quatrain Mavens

I did assume we'd have to build Hoover Dam.

I'd move the settler maybe 1se and then look at where the best spot to settle is.

If you need a rhyme then...

Jungle to the south and hills/floodplains to the east
Could this city become a beast ;)

i still think the same spot

maybe worker>warrior and do we want religion?? will play in a few hours in case you want to check in before bed

Ok, first SG in quite a bit of time! Looking forward to screwing this one up because GreyFox isn't around to :whipped:

I moved SE as noted in the previous pic, but there wasn't much difference. I figured the extra commerce on our capital wouldn't hurt at all, so I founded Thebes:

I went worker first, and Hunting so we could start that camp up right away. I also forgot that Egypt didn't get Mysticism

3: There was a village to our SW that I popped this turn and we got a scout: Rex and Immy. I thought i took a pic of them standing proudly, but it didn't show up :( I sent them to the east to see what they could see on the open plains.

Next turn, I discovered that we're in the SW corner.

I also spied that goody hut to our north and sent the boys up there to investigate.

7:

Went for AH for horsies, and to develop our cows.

And next turn, we got gold from that northern goody hut, and Buddhism was founded in a distant land.

More exploration, until turn 11:

Eep!

But after the battles:

:woohoo: I renamed him Hercules (& Co.) and gave him the Woods I promo b/c he deserved it

Immediately thereafter, more wild animals attack and we lose the boys up north, and ironically:

a lion kills our Herc on a forest hill while he was healing (so we're defenseless - please see the pigswill quote in my sig)

3 turns later, on t16, our worker popped, and I went warrior. I waited because could it have been any grander for me to lose us our first SG in years?

t17: Hinduism pops and AH is in. I selected pottery as a place holder here and then forgot to check whatever it was i thought i wanted to check so...

Nine turns later (t26) Pottery is done and I yield my time to the "Distinguished" "Gentleman" from Sydney.

The warrrior will finish next turn so if we lose, it's on you. I left you with almost a unit. I q'ed up another warrior so maybe war>war>settler? or WSW if we're adventurous?

our city:

Deer and cow improved, but not roaded of course.

the lands:

The Rooster
pholkhero >> just played, and did damn fine job. boy is he handsome
ozbenno >> UP NOW and may sink this ship
OPEN >> on deck
OPEN
OPEN

** Spots still open and filling up slowly! Don't miss out! Sign up today, before supplies . . . well, expire at this rate. Sign up today, and you (yes YOU :wavey: ) could play next!

Who, me??

OK, well done on not losing yet. I have the save and may even play some turns tonight!

Looks like some good food for the capital and a few hills for production as well. As its Monarchy, a sneaky Oracle might be all a (bad) idea but we need Pottery, Mining (if we don't have) and The Wheel (if we don't have) before thinking of that.

I think in Oasis maps the river will flow all the way to the very north of the map, so expansion should be looking that way, although it looks pretty bleak that direction.

And in a sign that we haven't played this thing for way too long, I realised there is no Hoover Dam in Civ IV, it is the Three Gorges Dam that is the wonder that gives you free hyrdras in every city. Although I still intend on building the Hoover Dam.

Although I still intend on building the Hoover Dam.
lol nice.

no on mining and wheel so we'd need that. also, now that i know the gorgeous dam gives us hydras, we absolutely can NOT build it! we need ALL our cities to waste time building dams!! We need redundancy! Again and again!

imgur. the three dots gives you the shareable links with the bb code in it already; click and paste.

also, i just reread our msgs where I initially said we can't build factories until we have hydros so i'm going to update the rules

I load up the save and see that a warrior is in 1 turn so we may make it to 2000BC after all...

I change the worker from a farm to a cottage on the floodplain, more so I feel like I've done something than anything else.

The warrior is built and a <not a hydra> is queued up and after that another <not a hydra>

We research Mining and go for Mysticism and start mining

The Mayans are just to the east but there is no river between us. I didn't actually say hello and just kept sneaking past

Mysticism was replaced by Writing as Judaism was already founded. We can generate some decent beakers from the capital so an early library and great scientist is a good idea (I think). Which is good as I stopped after the capital built a <definitely not a hydra>. The capital might be a good science/production city but the rest of the river terrain sucks majorly

I don't know where to stick the second city. We'll eventually want to grab the spices in the east but only after iron working/calendar will that be a decent city. I think 1NW of the warrior is the best spot now. Couple of hills and floodplains might go all right.

I stopped there so we can decide where to plant the second city and so that if the exploring warrior dies, its your fault  :p

if the exploring warrior dies, its your fault  :p
guess i'll have to go say hello to maya then and see what we can do.

perhaps we can squeeze a city east and one north, and have them be low pop, production cities - making low-cost units?

i can get to this tomorrow as it's my regular day off this week. I'm htinking i'd like to head up north and see what's what but not sure I want to settle a city without input. if i get the motivation tonight, i'll make up a small dot map but if not, look for it in about 8 or 10 hrs for this post; i'll do it before the kids start getting up for school.

edit to add that if ANYone else would like to take a shot at screwing this up, er, playing with us, feel free to place your quarter down. even if you've never SGed. we'll even take people that from that weird Deviant Minds website that the government shut down.

what about this?

it's been awhile but, though we share a tile, it gets a second city up that's admittedly mediocre, but w our variant, might be the best we can hope for in the early game. good prod and good food production, possibiity of mills or towns on river...idk, i think i like it

Is this an open SG? Are you looking for more sign ups?

"All cities must be founded on rivers." With this limit, the mediocre red bot is the best. Get some culture in the city quickly to eventually claim the furs. There is a shortage of happiness so far.

It is indeed. Glad to game with you again, sir! If you you're feeling bold, you can even take this next set. I was just about to load up the game, but happy enough to sit here in my chair a bit longer.

Got it

2280 BC (0)
Wake a warrior to escort the settle to red dot.
(IT) A warrior is killed by a lion. Healing in the desert left him more open. If possible, I prefer to heal on hilled forest that they were near.

2160 BC (3)
Memphis is founded on red dot. An obelisk is started.
(IT) The herbalist event shows up. I try the high risk option. They people are pissed off, but we have a permanent +2 health in all cities.

2120 BC (4)
(IT) Research on writing is completed. Up next is bronze worker. Copper is going to be extra tough, as it needs to be near a river.

2080 BC (5)
(IT) The exploring warrior is beat up by the lion.

2040 BC (6)
(IT) Thebes completes a granary, and starts work on a worker. One worker for two cities is to light.

2000 BC (7)
The warrior pops a hut and gets masonry for free.

Summary:
Once the second worker is built, we can debate the Great Wall. If we want it, we can’t wait much longer.

The warrior is on the hill hitting space bar to heal. I never use the heal button, as I want to option to run if something to strong shows up.
