PH08: The People of the Deer

Well, I guess it is time for my deviant mind to start making stupid suggestions for you to veto. ;)
ahh, a man who knows his place :D

i had first htought of those gems, as those are the only happy resources until we get optics (or is compass?) for the whales ~ but as you say, it IS very far ~ ahh, why not? if we lose, at least we know who to blame it on

i made this ~

Fall back could be the other gems site, and note i split those deer ~ if we lose either of the gems sites, we could combine them back into one and get all 4. we could even stick another city in that large, resource-less forest btwn us and the gems

also, should we run all farms, ya think?? try out that SE that Pigs and I are so good at ;)

When its comes to SE pholkhero is a Shining Example
Spoiler :
:deadhorse:
.

I am ok with that. If we go bankrupt, at least we will know who to blame. ;)
 touche!

now that i think of it, though, a) there's not a WHOLE lot of excess food to run specialists with, and b) there ain't a whole lot of commerce resources out there either ~ maybe we should just go for cottages on the rivers, and leave all the other forests for production

some other musings:
~ Cultural cities: should probably be high food as i think artists are going to give us a lot of our culture, so maybe Njorls "fallback" site can replace my two dots near those 4 deer
~ otoh, unless there's a whole lot of hills on the map that we don't know about, everyone's production may suck, and we'll have a good chance for wonders if we want them ~ good way to generate Great Persons w/o the food needed
~ monarchy should be in our future sooner rather than later, since we'll need it to grow our cities past size 5 or 6

what tech path are we on ~ masonry > mining > bw?? where next?? Priesthood for Oracle??? Writing > Alpha??

i wonder if we could afford to delay stonehenge for one more warrior, settler to go grab that other spot up north if they're both not taken

I'd very surprised if Hammurabi doesn't grab at least one of the gem sites very quickly and could even try for both. However the four deer site is a bit further away for him so we could take a chance on building SH first. On the other hand my limited experience of BTS suggests that AI don't prioritise wonders very highly. So I'd go for third city before building wonders (which makes bee-lining stone a bit pointless  ).

An explorer was made to guard the future settling party

Roads were built

Roads were washed out the turn after they were completed

New friends (or foes?) were found

New discoveries were made

Rumors of bandit raids reach our ears

We encounter some of these bandits. They seem to have also mastered the exquisite art of the heavy wooden club.

A settling party was created and instructed to settle north. 'How will I know the exact position?' the settler's leaders asked. 'A sign from above shall show you the way' was the answer.

The sign from above was encountered

A new city was founded, named rather sarcastically due to the gems in its vicinity

More discoveries were made

New barbarians were met, different from the last. They seem to have acquired a new unknown technology involving hurling pointy sticks at high velocity.

A plan was developed to test the barbarians guile, will they foolishly cross a river and attack us in our native woods where we would have the advantage? This was decided, rather than risking meeting them again in open territory.

There is concern of Balbonian culture spreading near Poverty Point. One of the gem resources we have coveted is now under control of Hammurabi.

Stonehenge has been started in Cahokia. A worker is also in the queue. Cahokia's worker is heading north, under escort, to Poverty Point to improve the land there.

Nice site. If we get another religion there's a fair chance of it establishing in Poverty Point which would help culture significantly.

It also guarantees us border tensions with Babylon. If we were to adopt a different religion Hammurabi might even get to dislike us enough to declare war  which we would have to honorably and self-righteously wage until the termination of the infidel's mundane existence ;) .

Is there still a chance of us getting Monotheism first? If we go for Monotheism before BW and delay putting up a third city up till we get another religion, I think Poverty Point would be guaranteed to be the holy city (unless Taoism spreads to it). The problems with this are that we could be beaten to Monotheism or that founding a 3rd city and BW (chopping, slavery) would be a better choice than the extra culture in Poverty Point.

With stone we have a shot at getting the Great Wall for the early great spy.
Edit: D'oh! Honorable rules, no aggressive missions for spies.

There is a gold coin in the corner of Monotheism so I think it's still open to found a religion.

It's 30 turns, our research rate sucks since we're working tiles with 0 commerce.

I started Stonehenge since it seemed like a faster way to get a monument in Poverty Point. Then when the borders pop we can at least work 1 gem. We'll need bronze working to do this since it's on a forested hill. And AH for the sheep. (I bet that riverside grassland tile has horsies on it).

Being able to work those tiles (plus chopping) does sound better than some extra culture in Poverty Point, especially since we'll get a border expansion there anyway from stonehenge or a built monument if we don't get stonehenge. I couldn't decide if making Poverty Point a holy city would be worth delaying BW and maybe a 3rd city, but it really makes sense to mine those gems asap for 5 or 6 more delicious, delicious commerce.

Good turns, Njorls ~ I think Stonehenge IS the way to go at this point. That'll help ALL our cities, and we wouldn't have to swap religions (DID I adopt Taoism as the state religion? I forget . . .), esp as BW will help us immensely, too.

Another thing we need sooner rather than later is Pottery for cottages since we're so darn commerce-less ~ should we try for another religion after BW, and maybe the Oracle, or go for Pottery > Writing > Alphabet??

and remember: even something isn't in the "Honorable" rules per se, please keep that variant in mind ~ i.e., IF our border push angers Hammarabi enough to start a war, so be it, but it would be DIShonorable to deliberately try to instigate a fight ~ (We may compete to the best of our abilities, but we may not "wage war" (so to speak) )

and who's up anyway??

We have no state religion at the moment I think.

I agree on Pottery. We also will need AH when Poverty Point's borders expand, we can work the sheep then.

But beyond that we'll have to decide: Oracle? Pyramids for Representation? More expansion? I'm leaning to more expansion since it's the only way we can guarantee enough cities. Maybe we can pick up a nice wonder while we're doing that.

pholkhero: I hear you on honour; follow the spirit not the letter of the code of honour. It'll be a challenge not to play deviously, but why play variants if not for the challenge :goodjob: .

In terms of the game I think that once we've got three good sites for our legendary cities we can dial back on expansion. Think about religions and wonders (maybe use GP(s) from SH to nab theology and DR (or just go for mono after BW)). Pyramids are always handy. Sistine would be very handy.

good ideas, both ~ i agree on the expansion, and say we should stop at 4 cities for now: the 2 up north, and one south ~ perhaps we can do the ol' "build warrior-switch to settler to gain a chop-build warrior, etc" and get a settler from Poverty Pt in the near term, esp. since the worker is one his way up there ~ since we're already taking a risk with this game, why not push it a bit further, in for a penny-in-for-a-pound, insert-your-own-analogy-here, et cetera . . .

finish Stonehenge at Cahokia, go Warrior > Settler for the 4-Deer Site > whatever ~ maybe Pyramids ~ hopefully everyone will lack production capacity, so wonders *should* fall later than normal. Perhaps whip the Pyramids at the 4-Deer?? And then go for the Oracle after the Settler at Cahokia (free tech, CoL??) . . . just some thoughts . . .

tech path, maybe: Pottery > Mono > Priesthood > Writing > ???

Got it. Will play tomorrow evening around 20.00 MEST.

You may be interested to know there is a bug with the Boreal map script. If you found cities at the extreme north or south of the map, you will be unable to build anything other than units in these cities.

of course there is! Do we need to move any dots?? Or make it the missionary producer if we're stuck w/one??

Oi!
