I had just assumed this from the nature of the Ottoman special ability, but do you think that there will be more barbarian naval units (or pirates :p) in Civ5? I, for one, would find it interesting if when traveling across continents, pirates were a serious problem.

In Civ4, pirates were basically nonexistent. You could easily go whole games without seeing one or with seeing only one barb galley.

I also don't see any other way that the Ottoman ability would be viable. It would make much more sense if there were a sizable amount of pirate caravels and frigates. It would be weird to represent the Barbary corsairs with random triremes.

And besides. Who doesn't love pirates?

Well, barbs are supposed to be more common and more menacing in a technological sense, and since there's a major emphasis on navies this time around, it's pretty reasonable to assume that we'll be seeing quite a few more barb ships. And since naval units can attack coastal cities and units, that would mean that anti-piracy would be absolutely necessary. Perhaps a playtester could confirm?

Either way, certainly seems it'll be a far cry from "Grr I hate barb gallies! They pillaged my clam!"

I hope that pirates are a trade thread, blockading cities, rather than a major military threat. They shouldn't be a problem when I'm taking my fleet across continents, but they should force me to have a decent fleet even in peacetime if I want naval trade.

No. Barbarians should be abundant and annoying; they should have the potential to ruin empires because they've been known to historically do so. If Barbarians are a massive problem, then the Germans and Ottoman easily become more appealing and Montezuma and Songhai don't necessarily have to be psychotic. This would take into account the recent news of pirating today and problems with modern day terrorism (barbarians) as well, making even more interesting, historical ties. With the elimination of stacks, Barbarians are also more manageable. One-Unit-Per-Tile encourages you to build armies to protect your improvements as well which wasn't encouraged in older games, making barbarian stacks more annoying. This game can afford to crank up the annoyance of raging barbarians.

Land barbarians? Yes.
Pirates? No.

Please show me examples of big fleets of warships that have been taken out by marauding pirates.

Pirates have been annoying in a commerce-raider sense, not a military sense.

Except, these really don't have a big impact on anyone in a military sense. [Insurgents/partisans are not necessarily terrorists/barbarians.]

On the other hand, it seems like a pillaged improvement is temporarily knocked out (and needs to be repaired by a worker) rather than being permanently destroyed.

I hope there will be barbarian invasions from sea, like in Civ1 and 2...

Yes, definitely, Viking style.

Either you have a good enough navy to wipe them out at sea, or you have to deal with the land units.

Source??

(Sounds interesting especially with GP produced improvements, but other than that...why?)

As long as there is no dancing involved with this version of Sid's Pirates

The most annoying part of that game wasn't the dancing, but the lady whose eyelids didn't blink at the same time after you were done with the dancing. Freaked me out every time.

Screenshots that showed burning improvements, with an icon on them.

Agree that its not 100% proof.

To make it easier to recover from pillaging, which is much easier to do en masse with 1upt, and to prevent the dumb graphical thing where pillaged area is back to their basic terrain (just grasslands everywhere? Pillaging doesn't destroy everything IRL).

I do agree it make for easier management.... so your 'autoworkers' won't put in an improvement that wasn't there before. (I always liked the auto option.. 'don't replace' for a large empire because it allowed me to tweak what the auto workers did. This might be a good way of extending that)

Ha ha! OMG I thought I was the only person not disturbed by that

I seem to remember whole fleets of Barbarian galleys invading my coastal waters and pillaging my sea-based improvements in the early game of Civ4...

Seems to me you didn't listen to what I actually said and just wanted to make your own point regardless of mine. Obviously the term "barbarian" is subjective and can be used to represent any non-aligned, opposing faction.

You were talking about "modern day piracy and terrorism". Please show me where these are having a significant military impact.

In addition, cursor rollovers on these tiles identify the improvement as "Pillaged!". So, for example: "Grassland, Farm (Pillaged!)".

In addition to being a convenience feature, it's pretty important for expensive improvements that require the sacrifice of a Great Person. These would be less valuable if they could be easily permanently destroyed by the enemy.

Well, depending on what you count as pirates, various Viking fleets might count.

LIKE I SAID, you didn't read what I said <snip>. I never said PIRATES should or would be able to destroy empires and it's not physically possible. Land barbarians, however, can, but in modern society, both pirating and barbarians are too weak to inflict as much damage as, say, Vikings or Huns in the past.
