Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but what do you prefer, own or plan on buying?

There's a bunch of differences. I think the plasma technology is older and it will probably be fazed out in some years from now, but it seems the plasma TVs have better image quality in a number of areas, for example it's supposedly 'quicker' (600Hz) and has better contrast -> better blackness, but they're also much thicker, takes more power and has some other issues as well.

Plasma seems to provide better image quality for it's price, but LED is stylier... My old CRT TV died a month ago, so does anyone have any good insights? A 42' Panasonic Plasma looks pretty attractive atm...

Are data monitors possible and a viable option if TV-watching and perhaps some gaming are the main uses?

Plasma vs LED is like arrow vs cannon. LED saves energy, lasts longer and is superior in image quality. Plasma burns out fast.

LED-backlit LCD is where it's at. Plasma and regular LCD are old hat.
Most "TV-experts" still seem to favor Plasma when it comes to image quality though.. and with 600Hz refresh rate they're probably smoother and better for gaming.

If you want a similar LED-backlit LCD it will cost you a lot more.

I believe that Plasma does tend to offer a slightly better picture, but typically the other advantages to LCD outweigh it unless you're buying a massive TV and money is no object.

Exactly that. My parents bought a plasma a couple of years ago (like... 6-7 years or so) and image quality-wise, it holds up pretty well with most regular LCDs. Much better contrast, great colours.

The latest LCD screens however, are better (and are a lot thinner as well, plus more energy efficient, plasmas get hot). So LED LCDs are going to be the future... but they're still hideously expensive (though that should change within a couple of years).

Cheers, LT.

We bought a 42" LG Plasma a few months ago, and for what we payed (3800 kr at MediaMarkt sale :) ) we are very happy about the quality.

One major drawback though you really should consider is that if you intend to show static images a lot, like a computer screen, pause viewings, have a console connect, watch Text-tv, you run the risk of the image burning into the screen. For too long it might get permanent, but even for short times the images burn in temporarily, but usually go away after a while when you watch something else.

Not too fun if you watch playboy the night before, and next time someone else turns on the TV and sees a little bunny in the top corner of the screen :p

Yeah i've heard of that problem. Most often with video games, since while the game moves a lot, your health indicator and such can get burned into the corner.
