[GS] Play by cloud is a failure

    Apologies in advance, I hadn't had my coffee but have to say the following.

    Play by cloud is a failure
    Is my experience exceptional or are yours the same.
    - Games stall or get abandoned very early. I'm lucky to get to the second turn.
    - no communication method. either outside or in game. Again, email notification of comments.
    - Webhooks are for advanced users, why no email address option. And don't make it optional.
    - the open game listings are vague and you have to "join game" to see more.
    - a number of games I try to join result in an error box.

    rant: Yet again, this game is feature and art pumped but never polished. I can hear the term ring out to the development team when they want to do something good, this is out of scope. Reminds me of my good old days. We just wanted to have things works well for the user.

    I am only discovering this now as the game is also a failure on single player (lets not discuss AI). So I wanted to play turn based, not asynchronous, multiplayer.

    I have joined discord channels and may have found one with somewhat strict rules on turn abandonment. While other channels just point to games which easily stall. No wonder I see lots of duel player games.

    There is a shining light in all my (their) failures, a hotseat adaption to "play by cloud". I have joined the website Play Your Damn Turn. So far, so happy.

    Yep I agree. There should be a way to send players messages. I'm on the discord server Civ6 Cloud games and I love it. People play turns regularly and there's communication. Look at the GS No Mod game. That's turning out to be a failure. People are joining these games and then going on vacation for weeks and just stalling the game for the rest of us. Joining a PBC game is a commitment and if you can't commit then don't join. It's such a simple concept that people just can't seem to grasp because they only think about themselves.

    This is just another example of how Firaxis wants to provide a multiplayer game, but, 2K doesn't. Remember 2K aquirered Firaxis during the development of Civ5, and that was released without multiplayer. Everything about Civ6 multiplayer has a tacked on feel and seems to be barely tested. PBC is a good concept, but the implementation was poor. I doubt we'll get a comprehensive and fully functional multiplayer experience until 2K figures a way to make money off of it.

    wel i dont really agree. I play a lot of PBC games and some dont even start and others are going fine. Its true that its so sad there is no form of ingame communication like a simple chat or something.
    But i play via CPL discord and so we chat via discord. What is real nice also CPL has dedicated players so quitters dont are much there in cpl

    also mods give a lot of probems and errors so 2 games where i was in are crashed. Hope they fix this soon

    I have 5 or 6 games going with 5 to 8 people in each that are going at a steady pace in our discord group(Same group as Bulla). Its no different how regular multiplayer games fall apart with random people. You just need more organization than posting a join code and its fine.

    yeah pbc is a bit the same as normal mulit player games. some go fine others not. But PBC is very new so i hope they keep improve PBC

    iOS just got multiplayer. I’m in 2 games now, with another one forming. All are using discord for the primary method of communication.

    It sucks that this might be a problem, but this isn’t a new one by any stretch for the 4X genre, or even boardgames PBEM/Play by forum. As long as I’ve played async games, even on iOS when the notifications are top notch, this kind of thing happens.

    funny civ on iOS. i wonder how u can play civ on a smal iphone screen but i guess they worked it out. i remember years ago there was a civ game for iphone but it was very much simplified for iphone but fun

    I barely play on the phone. My iPad however, that’s a different story. Don’t insult it until you try it ;)

    Civ Rev, and Civ Rev 2, are very much a simplified experience. They’re both also very boring to me.
