The previous poll on options for DG5 diluted the "play with a mod" vote excessively, by having many specific mods listed. The total of all mods exceeded the 33% threshold I suggested, while no individual option got that much support. I propose the following sequence of polls:

1. A simple poll do you want to play with a mod, y/n/a
2. A multi-choice poll which mod(s) are you willing to accept
3. If any choice in poll 2 gets a clear majority, then go with it. If it is a plurality, then run a Y/N/A approval poll on the one with the most votes.

This is the 1st poll. Do you want to play DG5 using a mod, or using plain vanilla?

This poll will remain open for 3 days.

i already had a set of polls set up
also what do u mean by mod? does that include variants?

A "mod" is a set of files which change the feel of the game by changing units, tech tree, governments, resources, or other aspects of the game. Examples are DyP and GOTM.

A "variant" is a different way of approaching game play, within the same basic game. Some examples are 5CC, 0CC, and Always War.

Edit: Mods also often include new civ's with different characteristics than the ones we're used to.

I would rather play by the default rules in the demogame.

No, if we played with a mod, then it may mean we have to play around a bit for a term working out the best strategies and what the hell to do, delaying more time before this demogame gets started.

I voted NO. Although a Mod may make a Demogame more interesting (possibly), this poll is premature as far as an end result goes. "Do we want to play with a Mod?", yes or no, is kind of like signing a blank check. We don't know what the end result will be. The format of the game was supposed to be Vanilla. I'm not really opposed to variations or even Modding the map, but this poll suggests we will play with any Mod. Civ Diablo, anyone?

Being forced to play plain vanilla is not quite as bad as to be something to drive me away from the game completely, but it comes close.

I defined a process of deciding if we want a mod at all, choosing one, and then ratifying the choice, so it's not like this is an irreversable decision, nor are we likely to end up with a "mod from hell". :D

Also, speeking from a mod/scenario creator's point of view. Mods usualy have a huge download size and not everyone has a DSL or a Cable modem connection. If we go with mods, then everyone here would be forced to download the mod including the 56kers. Also, the downside with mods with vannila Civ3 is that you need to overwrite the default files inorder to get the effect of the mod. (PTW & C3C does not have this problem)

That is not entirely true. An edit of the rules or a custom map or changed unit-abilities will make the mod to have a normal size.
If new units are added, graphics changed and a scenario is created - Yes that increases the size; but those changes are not necessarily needed for a mod.

It would however prevent an obstacle to new people to the demogame, something else to read and install before playing the game, the constitution is long enough. We want to make it easier for new people to walk into the game.
